5 Claims.
This invention relates tzo cars of tzhe type tzhatz have adjacentz ends of: tzwo car sectzions or bodies norme on a common truck, popularly called articulatzecl cars, ortzrains, ancl tzhe principal object 5 is to give the two car ends supporting bearings of substantially the same area presented in like relation about a common centzer on the tzruck.
Further objectzs and aolvahoages of tzhe invention Will appear as tzhe disclosure proceeds and 1 he'description is read in connectzion witzh tzhe accompanying drawings in Which Fig. 1 1's a side elevatzion of tzhe adjacent: ends of two car bodles and a common truck;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of portions of two* 15 end sills, tzwo centzer platze braoket:s, and. partz of Ehe common truck displaced to indicatze tzhe manner of assembly;
Fig. 3 is a perspectzive view of one of the centzer plate brackets;
Fig, 4 is. a perspectzive view of the same center plat;e braeketz from a different: pointz of view;
Fig. 5 is a perspeccive vtew of tzhe otzher centzer platze bracketz;
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectzion through tzhe 25 partzs shown in Fig. 2 in their assemblecl relation; Figs. 7 and 8 are sectional views taken on the lines II-l anal 8-8 01 Fig. 6.
Butz these specific views and tzhe corresponcling description are used to illustratze the bestz em- 30 boolimentz so far made and not tzo define the limitzs of ehe inventzion which is susceptzible of many other embo-dimentzs.
In F1'g. 1, tll and H indicatze adjacentz ends of tzhe car boclies supportzed on a common truck I2, 5 of the swing motzion type, including a bolstzer I3 equipped with a depresse-d cent:er plate t 4, having a flat; bearing surface I5 from Which rises a cylindrical Wall HE. The bolstzer and tzhe centzer platze are made in separate castzings fitted one 0 witzhin the otzher, and made fast by bolts 17 extending through the fiange I8 of tzhe center plate into tzhe si-des I9 of the truck bolster. The depression is made in an eflortz to getz the flatz bear- -ing surface 65 substantzially in line wlth the axle 5 of the tzruck.
Bach car bocly includes an end. sill 2t3, or 2t, to which is secured a center platze bracket 22, or 23, by means of boltzs 24, a key 25 and a dowel 26.
The centzer plate bracketz 23 has a flatz supportzt ing bearing surface to real; upon the flatz surface t5 of the body center platze, and comprises tzwo laterally space-d parts 21 and a lengtzhwise sentrally placecl partz 28, whereby the bocly is given a wicle base in a sort of three-point; supportz.
The bracke 22 also has a flatz supporting bearing surface composed of tzwo laterally spaced partzs 29 ancl a lengthwise centzrally placed part 30,
Whih interfitz W1'th tzhe corresp0ncling parts on. tzhe bracketz 23, as shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the partz 36 being on an arm 3! which in assembly, 5 passes through tzhe opening 32 in the bracketz 23. The several parts of tzhe compositze center bearings are spacecl apart, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, indicatzed by tzhe gaps 33, to provide for the relative rotzary movement aboutz the common center 33, as tzhe car passes around a curve in tzhe track. The outzside surfaces of tzhe center platze partzs are r-ounded t;o correspond with the cylindrical Wall I3 of tzhe tzruck centzer platze witzhin which they fit with aboutz 1/64" clearance.
The clearance betzween the curved heel 35 on the bracketz 22 (Fig. 5) and the corresponding surface 36 on tzhe bracketz 23 (Fig. 4) is slightly in excess of "3% in tzhis embodiment to make possible the tzransfer of draftz strains from one car tzo another tzhrough t;he truck center plate.
The tzwo heads 31 ancl 38 on the end sills, into which tzhe dowels 23 are received, are spaced aboutz f; when the car is on level tzrack and this allows sufficientz clearance for taking the valleys on standard railways and tzhe bufi strains are ordinarily tzransferred from one car to anotzh'er through the truck ce nter plate.
VVhile side bearingsor a stabilizing rigging Will ordinarily be used, it has been found. that giving tzhe car bodies a relatively Wide flatz supportz, 0r base, on tzhe truck centzer plaoe tends tzo eliminate swaying and. makes for smootzh comfortable ricl- 1ng.
This invention enables such a supportz tzo be given tzhe t:wo adjacentz car ends witzhoutz extending tzhe width of the bolster tzo troublesome elimensions, or spaoing tzhe car ends an undesirable distance apart.
It also makes an interlocked artzieulatzed. joint: 40 between tzhe car ends thatz resists separatzion lengtzhwise and climbing of one car sectzio-n on tzhe otzher.
The car bodies, or sectzions, can be separatzed easily by raising tzhe sectzion atz the left; in Fig. 6 a. littzle more tzhan tzhe depth of tzhe center platte and then moving it longitudinally cf tzhe car. The opening 32 in the bracketz 23 has a sufficient vertzical dimension 130 allow tzhis operation. I claim as my inventionz 1. In an articulatzed car, adjacentz car ends, a common truck, a center plate on the common tzruck having a bearing surface, and supporting bearings for tzhe car ends each having several bearmg surfaces restzing on said center platze, the 55 major portioris of all of said severa1 bearing surfaces being spaced. apart and being substantially equidistant from a common center.
2. In an articulated car, adjacent car ends, a common truck, a center bearing member 0n the truck, and supporting bearings for the car end.sv
resting on the center bearing member, each supporting bearing inc1uding two bearing parts spaced. laterally 0n opposite sides of a bearing part of the other supporting bearing.
3. In an articulated car, adjacent car ends, a
common truck, a center bearing on the truck, a supporting bearing member for each car end resting on the center bearing, each member including two bearing parcs spaced. laterally 0n opposite sides 015 a sing1e bearing part of the other member, one cf the members having an opening therethrough between its said' two bearing parts through which said single bearing part of the other member may be inserted or removed.
4. In an articulated 'car, adjacent car ends, a common truck, a center bearing on the truck, supporting bearing members for each car end resting on the bearing, each member including a vertically rising cylindrical wal1 surr0unding said bearing surface, supporting bearing members for each caryend resting on the bearing surface, each member including two bearing parts spaced laterally an opposite sides of a single bearing part of the other member, one of the members having an opening therethrough between two of its bearing parts through which opening the single bearing part of. the other member positioned between said two bearing parts may be lifted to separate said. car ends.
