BAG FASTENER Filed Dec. 7, 1954 INVENTOR$ A Patented Sept. 1, 1936 i'i'E STATES BAG FASTENER William C. I-Iiering and Frederick W. Gocrdes,
Newark, N. J assignors to J. E. Mergott Company, Newark, N. J., a corporation of Delaware Application December 7, 1934, Serial No. 756,428
3 Claims.
This invention relates to devices for fastening together frame members for ladies hand bags, or the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a simple, efficient and relatively inexpensive fastening device, which can be made from sheet metal.
A further object is the provision of a fastening device for. hand bags having elements formed from sheet metal and adapted to effectively receive ornamentations of various kinds.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a hand bag frame and fastening devices embodying our in-- vention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective exploded view showing details of our fastening device, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional View of the fastening device. 7
Referring to the drawing, in Fig. 1 is shown a pair of frame members 4 of a well known type, hingedly connected, in this instance the frame members being of the channel type. However, it should be here noted that our fastening device is applicable to frame members of other types.
The fastening device is shown to comprise, see Fig. 2, a supporting plate 5, having projecting from the underside thereof tangs 6 which pass through suitable apertures in the frame 4, after which the tangs are upset to secure the plate to the frame. The supporting plate 5 is provided with an extension 7 which is curled upon itself to present a substantially cylindrical element 8, which cooperates with a similar element 9 to fasten the frame members together as indicated in Fig. 1, said elements 89 having their outer surfaces substantially spherical or barrel shaped, so that they Will come together with a pronounced snap.
The element 8 obviously can be made in shapes other than cylindrical or spherical without departing from the spirit of the invention.
For the purpose of receiving ornamentations, preferably a wooden plug it or its equivalent, is forced into the element 8, see Fig. 3, and pins ll carrying ornamental designs l2 or other forms of ornamentation are driven into the ends of the plug as shown in the drawing.
From the above description it will be seen that we have provided a simple bag fastening device which can be readily and conveniently made by bending fiat metal stock.
By means of the expedient of inserting the plug ID in the element 8, an unlimited number of ornamental designs can be conveniently applied to the bag fastening device.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device for ornamenting a cylindrical fastening element for hand bag frame members,
comprising a. wooden plug forced into said fastening element, and pins driven into the ends of said plug, said pins having heads carrying desired ornamentations.
2. A device for ornamenting a fastening element for hand bag frame members, said element being tubular, a Wooden plug forced into the tubular element, and pins driven into the ends of said plug, said pins carrying desired ornamentations.
3. A device for ornamenting a fastening element for hand bag frame members, said element having a tubular portion, a plug of relatively soft material forced into said tubular portion, and elements carrying ornamentations attached into the ends of said plug.
