Description
O. RAETZ. Cleansing and Scouring Device.
Patented June 25,1878.
Witnesses Inventor N. PETERS. R, WASHWGTON. D, C.
UNITEDSTATES PATENT QFFIGE- CHRISTOPHFER BAETZ, OF SANFRANCISCO, OALIFQBNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLEANSING AND L$QQUBINQDEY!CES- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,299, dated J une 25, 1878; application filed April 22, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHRIsroPHnER' RAETZ, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improved Cleansing and Scouring Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved knifescouring box, in which all the materials requisite for scouring knives may be kept, and in its combination with a pad by which the knives are scoured.
It consists of a box, in which a cleaningbrick is placed on a perforated bottom, and a scraper, which scrapes dust from the brick, so that the dust will fall onto the main bottom through the perforations or bars.
It also consists of a small implement which answers as a shovel or hoe, to scrape or carry the dust from the receptacle to a pad, so constructed that one part closes over the other,
the knife being cleaned by being rubbed back and forth between the two parts of the pad.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. I
A represents the box or receptacle for the bath-brick, with which knives are usually cleaned. Horizontally across the center of this box are placed several bars or plates, B, on which the brick O rests, and is inclosed by the cover D.
I then provide a scraper, E, of the form shown, which has on one side projecting sharp plates of metal, arranged vertically and diagonally, as shown. This scraperis placed in the compartment where the brick is situated, on top of the wire bars B. The handles of this scraper project through the slot in the side of the box A, admitting of a horizontal motion of the scraper when the box is closed.
By moving the scraper back and forth on the side of the bath-brick, fine particles of brick-dust are scraped off and fall through the openings between the wire rods or bars B, onto the lower floor F of the box.
The lower half of the front side of the box is left open, as shown, so that the floor F is accessible, and the brick-dust lies on the floor in a convenient position for removal. I also provide a peculiarly-shaped hoe or scraper, G, by means of which the brick-dust may be scraped or lifted from the floor F and placed in quantities to suit on the pad or cleaner H. This pad or cleaner H is formed by extendin g the lower floor F of the box A, and placing in it a piece of ordinary carpet, leather, or other substance for forming a pad. The extension in which the pad is formed is hinged at its middle, so that one half will close upon the other, when the two padded surfaces will come together, so that the knife may be pushed back and forth between them, and then cleaned.
When the device is not in use, the hoe or scraper is placed on the lower floor F under the brick, the extension with pads is closed,
and a button, I, keeps it in place. The pads are thenprotected from injury. The button I also serves to keep the pads closely together while the knives are being cleaned.
The operation of my device is as follows: A scouring-brick is placed in the box A on the bars B. The scraper E is moved back and forth by means of the handle projecting from the box, and the sharp pieces of metal on the scraper disengage particles of the brick, which fall as dust between the bars onto the lower floor F. The scraper G is then taken and used to remove some of the brick-dust from the floor, on which it has fallen, and place it in the part of the pad nearest the box. Then the knife is placed in the pad H, and the other half of the extension is turned over, so that there is then a pad above and below the knife. The knife is then rubbed back and forth between the pads on the brick-dust until it is cleaned.
I thus provide a convenient and compact arrangement for cleaning knives, which car ries all the appliances necessary, and is always ready for service. When closed up and put away it occupies little space, and it can be used without soiling the hands or clothes or wasting the brick-dust.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The containing-box A, with its perforated bottom B, for supporting a brick, and the slotted side, in combination with the scraper E,
forated supporting-plate B, solid floor F, and scraper E, in combination with the extension folding pad 11, and the compression button or cam I, substantially as shown, and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
OHRISTOPHFER RAETZ.
