KNIFE SECURING CLIP Filed Feb. 15, 1935 57 I AZZ 5/5 Patented Sept. 1, 1936 EJNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE KNIFE SECURING CLIP ration of New York Application February 13, 1935, Serial No. 6,289
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a knife securing clip whereby pocket knives may be hung from the edge of a users pocket instead of being loosely disposed of at the bottom of a pocket.
It is an object of this invention to provide a clip for a pocket knife that is permanently secured thereto out of the way of the knife blade to permit convenient use of the knife in the usual manner. By so attaching the clip the knife can be hung vertically from the edge or border of a pocket and therefore will follow the lines of the figure rather than form a horizontal lump at the bottom of a pocket. The clip may be formed integral with the metal bolster provided with one type of knife or may be secured in place by a rivet such as that commonly used as a pivot for the knife blade. In the latter case the curvature or crown of the surface may be utilized to hold the clip rigid, so that in either case the clip becomes an integral part of the knife without in any way hindering the normal use thereof.
It is another object of this invention to provide a spring clip permanently attached to and cooperating with the side of a knife to hold the latter fiatwise and vertically positioned within a pocket.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawmg.
This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawing and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a pocket knife having bolster ends one of which has a clip formed integral therewith.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the knife shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view showing the application of the clip to a knife of the type wherein the handle of metal, bone, composition, or pearl extends to the ends thereof without the use of separate metallic bolsters.
45 Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary edge view of the knife of Figure 3.
As shown on the drawing:
The clip of this invention is shown in the several figures as applied 'to knives of the conventional pocket pattern wherein one or more knife blades H are pivoted between metal side pieces l2 to which are applied handle portions l3. Two common types of knives are illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 respectively. In the first form metal bolsters M are applied to the ends of the side pieces l2, the ornamental handle portions l3 being riveted to the side pieces between the bolsters. In the other form the ornamental handle portions extend the full length of the knife, no protective bolsters being applied. In the second type of knife a knife blade pivot or rivet l5 extends through the handle portions l3 and assists in securing them to the knife skeleton. The bolster type of knife has similar blade pivots or rivets, which need not extend through the bolsters if the latter are otherwise secured to the side pieces I2.
The present invention relates particularly to the permanent attachment of a spring clip ES to the knife in such a way as to be out of the way of the blade and adapted for holding the knife flatwise in the pocket, the clip cooperating with the underlying handle portion to grip the edge of a pocket. To this end the clip shank I! may be formed integral with one of the bolsters, or soldered thereto, as in Figures 1 and 2 or may be applied to the blade pivot I5 before riveting thereof, or as an integral part of the rivet, as in Figures 3 and 4. If held under the rivet head, as shown, the shank I1 is preferably expanded into a pad 18 curved to fit the handle portion in order to prevent twisting of the clip under the rivet head.
It will thus be seen that I have invented a rigidly and permanently attached clip for pocket knives that will not interfere with the normal use of the knife while allowing it to be carried upright suspended from the edge of a pocket, with less danger of mislaying or loss, and greater neatness and compactness.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
In combination with a pocket knife of the bolster type having intermediate handle portions, a spring clip formed as an integral extension of one of the bolsters and overlying the adjacent intermediate handle portion to cooperate therewith to grip the edge of a pocket.
MARTIN BERSTED.
