(01.220-27) V The inventionrelates to .new :and iiseful yim provements in a metal container of the-friction closure type, and more particularly toa container wherein a frangible sealing memberis used in conjunction with the friction closure. 7 Ari-object of the invention is to provide a container of the above typewherem a frang-iblesea-ling member is disposed beneath the friction closure and secured to the can top byshaping of :the metal. thereof to provide a clamping means for the sealing member; I A further object of, the invention is to provide acon-tainer of the above. type wherein the cantop is bent upwardly to form a shoulder and thence laterally and back upon itself to. fonn apocket for the purpose of receiving the edge of the "sealing member and clamping the same to :thecan op. These and other; objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
Referring to the drawing:
7 Fig. 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section showing the container embodying the improvements of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged partial vertical sectional view of the container showing the friction closure and frangible sealing member in place.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a slightly modified form of a friction closure.
The invention relates particularly to metal .containers of the friction closure type having a frangible sealing member used in conjunction therewith. The container comprises a body portion preferably of metal having ends double seamed thereto, one of said ends being in the form of a container top having a central opening and a vertical friction wall surrounding said opening. A friction closure is provided for the container, said closure being adapted to frictionally engage the vertical friction wall of the container top for closing the container. A frangible sealing member or disc is used in conjunction with the friction closure. The disc is disposed so as to extend across the opening surrounded by the vertical friction wall and underlie the friction closure with the peripheral edge portion thereof contacting with the container top between the vertical friction wall and the double seam. The container top has a portion of the metal thereof bent upwardly to form a rounded shoulder and thence laterally and back upon itself to form a pocket for receiving the peripheral edge portion of the sealing disc. This pocket is N. Y., a
also adapted to receive a sealing material in which said peripheral edge portion of the sealing disc is adapted to be embodied. A portion of the metal which forms the bottom wall of the pocket is also bent downwardly and upwardly again to form a clamping member forclamping a frangible sealing disc against, the upper face of the pocket. In this manner the sealing disc extends across the openingin the container top, is secured at its, peripheral edge by the clamping member, and becomes imbedded in the sealing material to establish a hermetic seal for the container.
Referring more in detail to the drawing:
A container embodying the invention is indi cated at 4. The container is preferably of metal comprising a body portion 5 having a bottom end 6 double seamed thereto as indicated at l', and a top end 8 secured thereto by a double seam 9. The top end 8, or can top as it is usually called, has a central opening with an upstanding vertical friction wall In surrounding said opening. The vertical friction wall terminates at its upper end in a hollow strengthening bead H. A friction closure I2 is provided for the container having a depending vertical friction wall l3 which is adapted to frictionally engage the friction wall ID, of the can top for closing the container. The friction closure I2 is provided with an outwardly turned laterally extending hollow bead M at its upper end which is adapted to overlie the can top.
A frangible sealing member or disc I5 is used in conjunction with the friction closure l2 for further sealing the container. This frangible sealing disc is preferably made of aluminum, but might be made of any other frangible material, such as taggers tin, paper or the like. The disc I5 is of such diameter as to be adapted to extend across and beyond the opening defined by the vertical friction Wall, underlie the friction closure, and have the peripheral edge portion l6 thereof contact with the under face I! of the can top between the vertical friction wall and the double seam of the container. The container top has a portion of the metal thereof adjacent the central opening therein bent upwardly to form a rounded shoulder l8 and thence laterally and back upon itself to form a pocket l9. Said pocket I9 is adapted to receive a sealing material 20 and the peripheral edge portion l6 of the sealing disc is imbedded therein. The portion of the metal forming the bottom wall 2| of the pocket is also bent downwardly and upwardly to form a clamping surface 22 for clamping the peripheral edge portion [6 of the sealing disc against the under the outer face of the vertical friction wall It off the can top. The friction closure above described comprises a depending friction wall 23 which terminates at its lower edge-ma hollow strengthening bead 24, the upper end thereof being bent outwardly in the form of t em-army extending bead 25 which may be grasped by the hand for depending portion and surrounding a central opening, the inwardly extending portion of the removing said closure. 4
In manufacture, containers closed by the invention are assembled at'the fac tory. I The frangible sealing memben is clamped to the can top, the friction closurei's-inserted; and the can top is doubleseamed to the container body. In this manner the containers are shipped to the packer who fills through and'closesthe opposite end of the containerxby double seaming a' conventional end th reto. i 1 i When'it is desired to opena container of" the type disclosed by the invention, the'friction 010-- sure is first removed and the frangible disc cut away by a knife or other sharp-instrument. f From the above it will be apparent that acontainer has been devised wherein a hermetic seal has been provided for a container of the friction closure type and wherein theremoval of the fran gible disc used in conjunction withthe friction closure would readily indicatethat the contents of the container have been tampered with; =Itl iS 'to be further notedlthat the closure member;
of the .type di s-- frictionally engaging the upstanding wall of the can top H), serves to maintainthe clamping surfaces H, 22 in tight contact with the peripheral edge portion of the sealing disc l5.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention -as set forth inthe appended claim. Having thus described. the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 5 Patent, is n 1 A metal container comprising a body portion having a can top secured thereto by seaming,
the .bddy" wall ofthe container and an inwardly *extending'portion terminating in a vertical upstanding wall substantially co-extensive with the can top between the depending portion andthe upstanding wall being bent to provide a'rounded shoulder at the lower end of the said upstanding wall, a pocket for asealing material between the shoulder and the depending portion and coop crating clamping surfaces" at the'opening-into' standing wall .for'closing the container and for maintaining the clamping surfaces in contact with the sealing disc. xiii:
