My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a necktie and has for one of its is detachably connected with the knot structure,

the latter end being the head which is generally permanently fixed to the necktie.

Another object of the invention is to provide a necktie in which the knot covering and breast piece are held in place on the knot core by means of the neckband through the medium of a loop carried by a part of the necktie structure and through which the neckband passes.

Another object of the invention is to use said loop for holding the neckband in any selected adjustment thereby eliminating the necessity of providing a pin, clamp or other equivalent securing means.

Another object of the invention is to provide a preformed necktie which may be readily assembled with a minimum amount of stitching,

Another object of the invention is to provide a necktie including a core element, a knot covering and breast-piece carrying a loop element associated with the core member so that the loop passes through a portion thereof, said knot covering being drawn up over the core and tucked in between parts thereof so as to be clamped in place and a neckband slidabiy mounted in the loop element to hold the parts together, said neckband having one end detachably fastened to the knot whereby the necktie may be readily and quickly placed about or removed from the neck of a wearer.

Another object of the invention is to form the necktie by a new method.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective means for closing the lateral edges of the knot structure to produce a tapered tubular knot.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the knot closing means that the same may carry one element of an attaching means by which one end of the neckband is detachably connected to the knot.

A further object of the invention is to so fold a portion of the breast-piece that the completed necktie will simulate the ordinary four-in-hand necktie which has to be retied each time it is used.

With these and other ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which: t

In carrying out my invention as herein emtogether only at their ends by any suitable means,

such as stitches, staples or the like, although preferably said securing means are hollow or tubular rivets or eyelets 29. The walls are so arranged that when the core member is fashioned A piece of suitable goods or fabric is folded longitudinally with the-wrongside-or reverse face outside and the longitudinal meeting edges are sewn together by the stitches-'32 to form a tubular khot covering '33, Fig. '8, and said knot covering has-a slit or aperture 34 suitably positioned to coincide with the aperture 3| in the core member under-certain conditions as willpresently appear.

Another piece of suitable goods or fabric, preferably the sameas used in the knot covering, is properly fashioned to provide a breast-piece 35. Preferably thisbreast piece is also made into tu-. bular form by folding the fabric ands'ewing the "same together along its longitudinalmeeting edges by means of stitches 36 and then flattening the tubular. formation so that the stitchesare at the back. "Ihis"br'east-'piece may be I suitably 'stiff'ened by the use of'any desirable number of stiffeners, one of which is designated by the numeral 31- and shown 1. If desirable, an

additional stiffener may be utilized" as shown in my copending application, Serial No. 688,177, dated September 5; 1933.

This breast-piece is now inserted in the tubular knot covering 33, which has its wrong side turned out, until the upper ends of both members practically coincide and then a loop element 40 is positioned as shown in Figs. 9 and 10 and all three members secured together by stitching or otherwise, but preferably by hollow or tubular rivets or eyelets 4| which pass through the ends of the loop element and portions of the knot covering and breast-piece. The loop element may be a piece of tape or other suitable material, although preferably elastic webbing or tape is used and in mounting the same the ends are brought fairly close togetherso that a loop proper 42 is produced as plainly shown in Fig. 9.

The assembled knot cover, breast-piece and loop elementare now inserted between the walls of the "core' member and the loop proper threaded through the aperture 3| in the inner wall of the core member as shownin Fig. 11. Next the core member is bent in more and the knot cover pulled .up over the same as shown in Fig. 12, at which time the aperture 34 in the knot covering can beplaced over the loop proper of the loop element so as to expose said loop proper.

In bringing up the knot covering over the core member, the right side of said covering will be turned out and that portion of the knot covering which now becomes the upper end is passed over the upper edges of the walls of the core member and tucked or inserted in between the Walls of said core member so that when the knot structure is bent into the desired tapered cylindrical shape the knot covering will be securely clamped in place and held against accidental withdrawal.

If desired, the neckband 43, which also preferably is of the same material or fabric as the balance of the visible portions of the completed necktie, maybe threaded through the loop 42 prior to tucking sin theedges of the knot covering, although this can be accomplished afterwards. The neckband is-a separateand distinct element although forming a part of the completed necktie and ;what I term the'head end of said neckband has one-element 44 of a separable fasten'er secured thereto for cooperation with a -companion element 45 of the separable fastener which is carried by the necktie-knot structure and may be secured on the inside of the knot as suggested in Fig. 14. These elements of. the

proper shape, the: knot structure'is bentaround until the vertical or lateral edges meet each other as shown in Fig. 1 5,which will provide a'tapered cylindrical knot, and a U-shaped closure member 446 of suitable material, preferably wire, and having a long and short leg, is inserted into the .rpockets lfi in the core member and the longer leg projects through the covering material and is afterwards bent and reinserted in the same pocket in which the shorter'leg was first inserted as shownin Fig. 15, so that the knot will-be retained in proper shape.

Instead of mounting the element .45 of the-separable fastener directly upon the knot structure,

a similar element 45a of a separable fastenermay e bemounted upon-=a knot closure member 46a so that when the latter is assembled the sameas the 'imember' lti'in Fig. 15; the element 45a will be. in a position for cooperation with the other element 44 of the separable fastener.

It is to be understood that under all ordinary conditions the neckband 43 is to remainin the loop 42 and where the latter is of elastic web- 'bing or tape there will be a resilient tension always upon said neckband, although the latter may be slid longitudinally of itself when desired. By pulling the neckband outward the tail end thereof below the loop 42. will be relatively shortened while the other or head end will be relatively lengthened. With the head end long enough to pass about a persons neck with a certain amount of slack, the element 44 carried by the neckband may be connected tothe element 45 or 45a. carried by the necktie knot and the tail end of the neckband may then be drawn downward to adjust said neckband about the neck of the wearer for properly positioning the necktie knot. As soon as; the neckband is pulled taut, it can be released since the tension of the loop 42 thereon will prevent the-parts from slipping.

Whenever it is desired to remove the necktie, the knot can he slid along the neckband until sufficient slack is provided to permit the wearer to separate the elements 44 and 45 of the separate fastener, at which time the necktie can be removed.

In order to hold the tail end of the neckband and also attach the breast-piece of the necktie to the wearers shirt, I have shown a combined clamp and clasp 41 formed from a suitable piece of fiat metal or other suitable material having a central section partially severed therefrom and slightly bent outward to produce a-tongue 48, the free end of which should be bent outward to form a lip 49. The under face of the tongue or the upper face of the body or both should be serrated, corrugated or otherwise slightly roughened to prevent slipping. In the edges of the body of said combined clamp and clasp, preferably at the ends, are formed notches 50 and in said body adjacent the notches are formed holes so that the said combined clamp and clasp may be sewn to the back of the breast-piece. by stitches 52 which stitches pass through the holes and notches. With the combined clamp and clasp in place the tail end of the neckband 43 may be passed underneath of the same as shown in Figs. 14 and and the tongue may be inserted inside of the edge of a shirt so that the latter will be clamped between the tongue and the body thereof, thus preventing the ends of the tie from being blown out.

In the modification, shown in Figs. 23, 24, and 25, the tapered cylindrical or hollow knot 53 includes a suitable flexible or bendable core 54 enclosed in the knot covering 55. The knot is retained in its cylindrical form by the closure member 56, preferably formed from wire so fashioned as to provide a curved check 51, a long leg 58 and a short leg 59 and said closure member is assembled in the necktie knot as previously described in connection with the other forms of closure with the exception that the present closure must be inserted from the bottom of the knot so that the longer leg projects beyond the upper edge thereof and then bent back and reinserted leaving the check 51 projecting into the lower part of the knot in close proximity to the rear face of the front portion of the knot.

A suitable breast-piece 60 depends from the knot and a neckband BI is provided similar in all details to the neckband hereinbefore described and therefore has one element of a separable vner wall of the core, said knot covering enclosfastener mounted on the head end for cooperation with the other element 45 of the separable fastener which is mounted on the necktie knot.

In this particular .form of the invention the breast-piece need not be secured to the .knot by use of the loop element 40, as previously described, but may be connected therewith in any suitable manner since the check 51 will cooperate with the tail end of the neckband and clamp the latter between the check and the front portion of the knot in any adjusted position. It will be obvious that the breast-piece may be connected with the knot in the same manner as before described and the loop 42 may or may not be of elastic material.

7 Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit ofmy invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is:

; l. A necktie comprising a core fashioned into tapered cylindrical form, said core including two concentric walls, a tubular knot covering having .one end attached to said core between the walls thereof and having the other end tucked in betweeri said walls and thereby held in place, a breast-piece depending from the core, a neckband having the tail end slidable through the tapered cylindrical knot formed by the core and its covering, and separable fastening means for detachably connecting the head end of the neckband to the knot.

2. A necktie comprising a core fashioned into tapered cylindrical form and including two concentric walls, the inner wall having an aperture therethrough at the front of the same, a breastpiece, a tubularknot covering, a loop member, means to secure coinciding ends of the breast piece and knot covering and said loop member together, said parts being inserted between the walls of the core with a portion of the loop member projecting through the aperture of the ining the core and having its upper end tucked in between the walls of the core to form the knot and said knot covering having an aperture for registration with a portion of the loop member, and a neckband having one end detachably connected with the knot and the other end slidable through a portion of the loop member for holding said neckband in any adjusted position and attaching the breast-piece and the lower end of the knot covering to the core.

3. A necktie comprising a bendable member fashioned into cylindrical form, a closure for retaining the meeting edges of said member in place thereby forming a hollow knot, a check formed as a part of said closure member and projecting into the knot in proximity to the front portion of said knot, and a neckband having one end detachably connected with the knot and the other end projected through said knot and held in any selected adjustment between the front wall of said knot and said check.

4. A necktie comprising a core of cylindrical form and consisting of two concentric walls, a body assembly including a tubular knot covering having a portion of its lower end telescoped inside of itself, a breast-piece having its upper end inserted in the lower end of the knot covering,

a loop and means to secure said loop and knot covering and breast-piece together, said body assembly having portions projecting in between the walls of the core and parts of theknot covering enclosing said core to form a hollow knot with the loop extending through apertures in the inner Walls of said core and said knot covering, a neckband projected through the hollow knot and said loop whereby the body assembly will be held in place and said neckband may be adjusted, and

companion elements of a separable fastener carried by the necktie knot and said n'eckband whereby the latter is detachably connected to the necktie. v

5. The structure set forth in claim 4, wherein the loop is of elastic material. v

6. A necktie comprising a core of cylindrical form and conslsting of two concentric walls, a body assembly including a tubular knot covering having a portion of its lower end telescoped inside of itself, a breast-piece having its upper end inserted in the lower end of the knot covering, a loop and means to secure said loop andknot covering and breast-piece together, said body assem bly having portions projecting in between the walls of the core and parts of the knot covering enclosing said core to form a hollow knot with the loop extending through apertures in the inner walls of said core and said knot covering, a neckband projected through the hollow knot and said loop whereby the body assembly will beheld in place and said neckband may be adjusted, a closure member to hold the vertical meeting edges of the knot structure together, and companion elements of a separable fastener carried by the necktie knot and said neckband' whereby the latter is detachably connected to the necktie.

7. A necktie comprising a core of cylindrical form and consisting of two concentric walls, a body assembly including a tubular knot covering having a portion of its lower end telescoped inside of itself, a breast-piece having its upper end inserted in the lower end of the knot covering, a loop and means to secure said loop and knot covering and breast-piece together, said body, assembly having portions projectingin between the walls of the core and parts of the knot covering enclosing said core with the loop extending through apertures in the inner walls of said core and said knot covering, a neckband projected through said-loop where the body assembly will :be held. in place, :-'a 'closure'member to hold the vertical-meeting edges of the knot structure together and thereby provide a hollow knot surroimdinga .portio'nfof the neckband, an element of a separable 'fastener carried by the free end of theneckband, and another element of the separable fastenerrcarried by the knot closure memberfor cooperation with the first mentioned elementiofiithe:separable fastener whereby the neckband; is detachablyconnected to the necktie.
