IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENSION-HOOKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,875, dated June 18, 1878; application filed December 6, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK ANDERSON, of Peekskill, New York, have invented an Improvement in Suspension-Hooks, of which the following is a specification?" This invention relates to the clasp of a suspension-hook, and is an improvement on a form that has been used in which the clasp is formed of a coil of two or more turns of wire, said turns being of the same diameter and wound close tbgether, so that their elasticity serves to hold or clasp any light article, such as tags, show-cards, 850., that may be inserted between them.

The object of my invention is to provide means by which the hold of the clasp may be made positive, and consequently more efficient than the old form of clasp. This object is attained by forming with the coil a spur that can be made to pierce the article inserted within the coil, and thus hold it securely.

The drawings will make clear the nature of my invention.

A is the clasp, formed of a coil of wire in the usual way. 0 is the spur, which consists of an L- shaped projection, formed of the end of the same wire of which the coil is made. This spur projects obliquely from the coil, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so that the point of the spur may not interfere with the entrance of articles within the coil. After the insertion of anything within the coil, the spur C may, with the pressure of the finger, be made to take the position shown in Fig. 4, thereby puncturing the article inserted. The spur is designed to be made of wire soft enough to allow it to retain its depressed position, and thus securely hold whatever the clasp may be attached to. The end or point of the spur may be sharpened to facilitate its action. The L-shaped projection may be made to operate inside of coil, as shown, or it may extend beyond and pierce the tag below the coil, though I prefer the former, as being more compact when in place. The free end of the coil may be formed into different kinds of hooks or loops for suspending the clasp, or it may be left straight with or without a sharp point, and of any length, or the stem may be dispensed with altogether and the clasp be used as a hinder or fastener for thin pamphlets,-circulars, &c.

I do not claim the clasp formed by the. coil A; nor do I claim the combination of a spur or pin with two independent flanges formed of coils, such as is used for paper-files, &c.

I claim- A device for suspending tags, cards, &c., made of a continuous piece of wire, having the clamp A formed by a coil of two turns of the same diameter, as shown, with the penetrating-spur 0 formed on one end thereof, and the loop, hook, or point B at the other end, the intermediate portion forming the shank, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
