Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B, CORNELL, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
ADMIT'IING LIGHT AND AIR THROUGH STEPS, &C.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,484, dated June 8, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. CORNELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Illuminating and Ventilating Riser for Stoops, Platforms, Door-Sills, &c.; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure l being a front view of my said improved riser; Fig. 2, an end View of the same when combined with a platform (H) and a door sill (Gr), and Fig. 3 a section in the line w of Fig. l.
Similar letters indicate like parts in each drawing.
The front portion E, of my improved riser is a metallic plate which has a series of parallel rows of apertures d, d, formed or cast therein substantially as represented in Figs. l, and 3.
The illuminating glasses a, a of any suitable shape are secured in the upper tier of glasses in the riser plate E, and the other apertures in said plate are left open for the admission of air. To prevent the water which may be driven into the said open apertures in the riser from passing into the apartment beneath the same, a sash frame c, whose openings are closed with thick plates of glass o, Z), is placed in an inclined position within the riser, and is combined with the wings f, f, which project therefrom and also with the inner side of the lower edge of said riser in such a manner as to form water-tight joints between the said inclined sash and its points of junction with the said wings and lower edge of the riser. It will therefore be seen that the water which may be driven horizontally into either of the open apertures in the riser, will be arrested by the glazed sash c, and will be discharged outwardly through the lower tier of said apertures onto the platform or pavement H; and yet the light will be allowed to freely enter all the apertures in the riser, and the air will also be allowed to freely enter all of said apertures with the exception of the upper tier of the same. My invention is therefore properly called an improved illuminating and Ventilating riser for door-sills &c.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new manufacture, is- Y An illuminating and Ventilating riser for 'door sills &c., composed of a perforated and partially glazed front plate E, combined with an inner inclined glazed sash c, substantially as herein set forth.
The above described specification of my improved illuminating and Ventilating riser for stoops, platforms, door sills, Snc., signed this 8th day of March 1858.
JOHN B. CORNELL.
