Description

'UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
lsAAc TfMoNTRoss, or PEEKSKILL, New vonk.
IMPROVEMENT AIN sTovE-LEGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,839, dated June 11. 1878; application filed May 28, 1878.
Zlo all whom t may concern:
,i Be it known' that I, IsAAc T. MoNTRoss, of Peekskill, in the'V county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented Ycertain newand useful Improvements in Stove-Legs and Method of Attaching the same to a Stove- Base, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of stove-legs and the means of attaching the same to the base of the stove.
Heretofore such legs have been constructed with attaching devices requiring a sliding motion of the shank in attaching them to the stove-base. This construction and method of fastening the legs has been found objectionable, owing to the liability of the shanks to slip out from between the fastening lugs or projections of the stove-base. It is the object of my invention to obviate this defect and provide a stove-leg and means of attaching the same to the stove, whereby the leg will be held with absolute security after it has once been secured to the stove, and by means of which the leg can be as readily attached and detached, when required, as heretofore.
The invention consists, rst, in the combination, with the stove base having a downward-projecting lug, circular in cross-section, and provided with an elongated cross-head, of the stove-leg having its shank provided with a longitudinal opening corresponding in form with said cross-head,whereby,when said cross-head is inserted through said openin g a partial rotation of the leg brings it into a position in which the ends of the cross-head project under the shank and prevent its detachment from the stove-base; second, in the combination, with the stove-base having a downward-projecting conical lug provided with an elongated cross-head, the base of which at its junction with the lug is similar thereto in shape and size, of a stove-leg having its shank provided with a longitudinal aperture similar in form to said cross-head, and its upper edges beveled and formed with curved indentations to lit the said conical lug when said cross-head is inserted in said openin g, whereby, when the parts are in this position, the lug is automatically centered, and the wedge-like action of the conical lug and thebeveled edges of theshank keep the leg snugly in place, and prevent swinging or jostling of the stove. In the drawings, Figure l represents a sectional view of my improved stove -leg and a portion of the base of the 4stove lto which it is attached. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of my improved stove-leg detached from the stove; and Fig. 3, a bottom view of a'portion of the stove-base, showing my improvedstoveleg attached thereto; Y
The letterArepresents the stove-leg, which may be of any approved design, and B the horizontal shank on theupper part of the same. The shank is shown, in the present instance, with an aperture or'opening, C, which is in the form of a rectangular slot, provided with curved recesses c c at each side, beveled from the upper to the lower face of said shank, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
Theletter E represents the base of the stove, which is preferably formed with a depending ornamental edge, e, which sets upon a shoulder, b, on the stove-leg when it is in place, which serves to support the weight of the stove and relieve thev shank of the stove-leg and the locking device on the base of the stove of any undue strain.
The letter F represents the locking device on the base of the stove, in the present example consisting of a lug or projection, preferably cast with the base-plate, and provided with a nut or head corresponding in configuration with the slot or opening in the shank of the stove-leg. That portion of the locking device lying between the stove-base and the head or nut is preferably formed in the shape of the frustum of a cone, formin g a bearing on which the curved beveled sides of the slot in the shank may be accurately centered and rotated,
in order to lock the leg to the base. The said head or nut on the locking ldevice is so located as to lie at an angle to the slot in the shank of the stove-leg when the latter is in place.
To secure the stove-legV to the base, the slot in the shank of the leg andthe head or nut on the locking device are brought in line with each other, the head or nut being passed through the slot or opening in the shank. The legis then partially rotated on the locking device, bringing its shoulder in position under the depending edge ot' the stove-base, and engaging the ends of the nut or head under the parts of the shank at each side of the slot therein, thus securely fastening the leg to the base of the stove, so as to insure it against accidental shifting.
The advantages of my improved stove-leg and the method of securing the same to th stove will be apparent.
It will be seen that the leg can be as readily applied and removed as the ordinarily-constructed stove-1eg, While there is no sliding motion of the shank, which is likely to be accidentally occasioned, and which would place said shank in a position in which it would become detached from the stove-base.
It will be seen that the essential feature of my invention consists in the interlocking device on the stove-base, to which the stoveleg is secured by a partial rotation thereon, and without any sliding motion of the shank.
What I claim is- A 1. The combination, With the stove-base having a downward-projecting lug, circular in cross-section, and provided with an elongated cross-head, of the stove-leg having its shank provided with a longitudinal opening corresponding in form with said cross-head, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the stove-base having a downward -projecting conical lug, provided wit-h a laterally-projecting cross-head, the base of which at its junction with the lug is similar thereto in shape and size, of the stove-leg having its shank provided with a longitudinal aperture similar in form to said cross-head, and its upper edges beveled to t the said conical lug When thecross-head is inserted through said aperture, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence ofV the subscribing witnesses.
ISAAC T. MONTROSS.
