AUTOMATIC COCK LOCK Filed Dec. 18, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 fi'aj'fl Z 75 /d I /7 {I '1 9 J I Inventor g g A llornbys July 21, 1936. J. F. ROSE AUTOMATIC COCK LOCK Filed Dec. 18, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Patented July 21, 1936 I UNITE I STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in locking means for the valves of railroad train air line cocks.
The principal object of the present invention 5 is to provide a lock which will be automatic in operation, locking the valve either in open or closed position.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of 10 the following specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation.
Figure 2 is a top plan View.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional 15 view.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view on line l4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 represents a fragmentary detailed sectional View of the cam means for the lock.
20 Figure 6 represents a side elevational view of the cam.
E Figure '7 represents a perspective view of the piston and rod.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numer- 25 als designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 represents the barrel of the cock with numeral 5 the laterally disposed connecting head therefor. Numeral l represents the usual cock plug of the rotary type which extends upwardly 30 and is provided with the squared reduced portion 8 at the top thereof. Connection is made at one end of the barrel 5 to the usual hose or pipe line 9 of the train system.
The reduced and squared portion 8 extends 35 into the cam head It) and this cam is provided with a grooveway ll merging at one end with a recess l2 and at its other end with a recess l3. This cam head i is provided with a laterally disposed handle M. The upper portion of the barrel is bored to provide the cylinder l5 in which the piston is is movable.
The plug I1 is threaded into one end of this cylinder l5 and is provided with a bore 18 therein for receiving one end of the piston rod [9. The other end of the piston rod extends through the other end of the cylinder [5 and is engageable in the groove H or either one of the recesses l2 or IE depending upon which extreme position the 5 valve 1 is to be retained in.
A coiled compressible spring 20 is interposed between the end walls 2| and the piston NS for normally maintaining the piston I6 urged toward the right in Figure 3.
A by-pass opening 22 communicates the barrel 5 with the cylinder l5 so that air behind the piston [6 will urge the rod [9 against the cam l0 and when the rod is engaged into one of the recesses IE or E2 the cam cannot be rotated.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials maybe resorted to without. departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a railroad train line air cock, comprising a barrel having a rotary cock therein, a cam 25 mounted on the cook, a cylinder on the barrel closed at one end and open at its opposite end, an elongated guide member, a plug head on one end of the guide member for disposition into the open end of the cylinder and having an axial bore therein, a piston slidable in the cylinder, spring means in the cylinder for urging the piston normally in a direction toward the plug, and a rod on the piston extending at one end through the closed end of the cylinder and having its opposite end riding in the axial bore of the plug and in the guide, said cam being provided with an opening on the periphery thereof into which the said rod can engage at one end, said barrel being provided with an opening communicating the interior thereof with the interior of the cylinder at a point between the plug and the piston.
