Abstract

539,095. Valves. ROVER CO., Ltd., and IVERSEN. P. A. SCOTT-. June 25, 1940, No. 10842. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIV] Communication between a hydraulic master cylinder and a reservoir is effected by a non- return valve which is adapted to be opened by the plunger of the cylinder when it is in or near its initial position, and which also serves as a stop for determining the initial position of the plunger. As shown in Fig. 1, the non-return valve h is disposed in a chamber between the master cylinder a and the reservoir connected to the pipe k has a stem m projecting through a passage of greater cross-section so that the valve is tilted to the open position as shown by engagement of a head d on the plunger b with the stem when the plunger reaches the normal position. The stem also serves as a stop for the plunger in this position. If during the return movement of the plunger, the pressure in the cylinder tends to fall below normal the liquid in the reservoir opens the valve against the action of the spring o and flows into the cylinder, the opening movement being limited by engagement of the stem m with the plunger. The spring o may be dispensed with by using a buoyant valve or by disposing the valve below the cylinder instead of above it, so that it is seated by gravity. In Fig. 6, the valve comprises a flanged disc adapted to seat on a tubular part i extending into the cylinder and which is normally tilted to the open position shown by the plunger. Fig. 10 shows a ball-valve h which in the normal position shown is moved off its seat i into a recess formed in the cylinder.
