Gas-Burner.
Pa'tented June-11,1878.
(Zhi/HW' I ffm/@f UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN MATTHEWMAN', OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,835, dated June l1, 1878; application led February 18, 1878.
so that, for instance, a person lying in bed may adjust the gas-li ght at a considerable distance from the bed, and it consists in combining with the lever or handle on the plug a pair of stationary arms having a perforation in each in the same vertical plane with the. lever, and
with a cord or chain from one end or side of the lever through the perforation in one of the said arms, and a similar cord from the other end of the lever through a perforation in the other arm, as more fully hereinafter described.
A represents a common gas-cock, with the burner B above. 0n the plug C a handle or lever, D, (here represented as of wheel shape,) is attached in the usual manner. Below lthe cock, and projecting outward from the burnerstem, are two arms, E F, one at each side, and in a plane substantially parallel to the axis of the plug, and with a perforation, a, in each in the vertical plane of the lever or handle D. From one side of the handle D a cord, d, extends downward through the perforationin the one arm, F, and from the opposite side a cord, e, extends down through the perforation in the other arm, E, and these cords may run for any length from these arms, and in any direction, without regard to the position of the burner, the perforations a a serving as guides, so that from whatever direction either cord is pulled, it will turn the plug accordingly.
I am aware that it is a common expedient to attach cords to the handle of a gas-cock, so that by pulling either the cock will be turned; but the attachment has been direct and without guides, so that the plug could be turned onlyr from certain positions, Whereas, by combining the guardsE F with the plug, adjustment may be made from any point, irrespective of the relative position of the plug to the point from whence the adjustment is made.
I claim- The combir ation of a suitable guide or guides with the plug of a gas-cock and its handle, with a cord from each side the handle through the said guide or guides, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JOHN MATTHEWMAN.
