This invention relates to pasting mechanism and is designed more particularly for applying to a bag a closure of the type. shown and described in the application of John A. Finegan, Serial No. 2,484, filed January 19, 1935, and owned by The Raymond Bag Company, assignee of the present invention.
One object of the invention is to provide mechanism for pasting a folded tape for a portion.

A further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism for folding a continuous tape over the open ends of a series of bags and pasting the tape to a portion only ofeach bag end. A further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism for folding a continuously moving tape over the open ends of a series of moving bags, pasting the tape to a portion only of each bag end and then severing the tape between adjacent bags.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the mechanism is described in detail.

In these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of the'invention and have shown the same as applied to one side of a, bag sewing machine. The other side of the machine, which is not shown in the drawings, is equipped with a sewing head for stitching the adjacent end of a bag, thus as the bags are fed through the machine they are stitched at one'end and the tape closure folded over and pasted to the other end. It will be obvious, however, that the present invention may be utilized either in conjunction with a sewing machine or separately therefrom.
The particular machine here illustrated comprises a main frame consisting of standards ill on which is supported a. table top I l which is provided with an endlessconveyor, which preferably comprises a plurality of chains I2, one chain only being here shown, and these chains are provided with upstanding, lugs l3 to engage'the bags and move them through the machine. As the bags are advanced by the conveyor a continuous tape is folded about the open ends of the successive bags, which ends are in substantial alinement, and is attached to the bags, in the present instance by pasting the tape to both sides of the bag end for a portion only of the width of the bag, As here shown, the tape is carried from a suitable source of supply, such as a roll I; over guides, such as horizontal rollers I 5 and I8 and a vertical roller H, which latter serves to turn the web to a vertical position. From the vertical roller I! the web, which is indicated by the reference numeral I8, is carried through a folding device l9 which folds the same along its longitudinal center. The bag ends also pass through the inner portion of this folding device and as the result the tape is folded about the open ends of the bags. Mounted adjacent to the tape guide It is a paste applying device having a part adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with the tape so as to apply paste only to predetermined longitudinal portions of the tape, which portions are spaced longitudinally one from the other. In the present arrangement the paste applying device comprises a movable paste receptacle which is preferably mounted for movement about a pivotal axis 2! arranged approximately parallel with the paste guide I6. Mounted in this receptacle and receiving paste therefrom is a paste applying element, here shown in the form of two rollers 22, the lower portions of which move through the paste in the receptacle and the upper portions of which engage the tape on opposite sides of its longitudinal center and apply paste thereto. This paste applying element moves with the receptacle when the latter is moved about its pivotal axis and is moved by the receptacle into and out of engagement with the tape. The point of contact between the paste applying device and the tape is preferably at the point where the tape is in engagement with the guide l6. s
When the machine is in operation the paste apply ng element is retained in engagement with the tape for an interval determined in accordance with the travel of the tape so that paste 55 filling opening, as shown in will be applied to a definite longitudinal portion of the tape. When this portion of the tape has been pasted the paste applying element is moved out of engagement with the tape and is retained out of engagement therewith during a further movement of the tape sumcient to provide the desired spacing between the pasted portions. This movement may be imparted to the paste applying element in any suitable manner and, in the present construction, the paste receptacle 28, which carries the paste applying element, is connected by a link 23 with one arm 25 of a bell crank lever which is pivotally mounted on the main frame. The other arm 25 of the bell crank is pivotally connected with a thrust rod 26 slidably mounted in a bearing 21 carried by the main frame. At its rear end the thrust rod is provided with a roller 28, which bears against a cam 29, a spring 30 serving to press the roller against the cam and to retract the rod after it has been actuated by the same. The cam 29 is rotated in definite timed relation to the travel of the bag conveyor i2 and this may be accomplished by mounting the cam on any suitable part of the driving mechanism for the machine as a whole, such as a-shaft 38. The driving mechanism may be of any suitable character, such as that shown and described in the patent to Sharkey No. 1,915,- 765, of June 2'7, 1933, and as it forms no part of the present invention it is not necessary to here show or describe the same. Separate feeding mechanism may be provided for the tape, if desired, but in practice I prefer to pull .the tape through the paste applying device and the folder by means of its connection with the bags which are being advanced by the conveyor. Consequently the cam 29 rotates in definite timed relation to the movement of the tape and the cam is so arranged with relation to the positions of the bags on the conveyor that the pasted portions of the tape will .be folded about and brought into engagement with the desired parts of the bag ends. Preferably the pasted portion of the tape is applied to the forwardportion of the bag and the pasted portions are of such length that the tape will be pasted to the bag for approximately tw -thirds of the width of the latter, thus leaving the rear end of the tape free so that it may be moved upwardly to permit the walls 01' the bag to be separated to provide a Fig. 5. The pasted portions or the tape are shown at 32 in Fig. 4 and it will be noted that the pasted portions 32 are spaced apart lengthwise of the tape a distance sufilcient to provide an unpasted portion of the desired length.
In some cases the action of the folder upon the tape may be sufficient to cause the proper adhesion between the tape and the bag walls but I prefer to provide a pressure device which will positively press the tape into engagement with the bag and cause the same to firmly-adhere thereto. As shown in the drawings a pair of rollers 33 are arranged just beyond the folding device l9 and one of these rollers is yieldable so as to pressthe tape firmly into contact with the bag. when the device is applied to a sewing machine the sewing head may be retained and by removing the needle the presser fo'ot may be used to press the tape against the bag. When the tape has been pasted to the bags successive bags are connected one to the other by the intervening portions of tape and means are provided for severing the tape between adjacent bags to separate the latter. The viscosity of the paste is such that when the paste applyingelement is moved out of engagement with the tape a thin film. or thread of paste may be stretched from the paste applying device to the tape and when eventually broken will engage the tape and extend the pasted portion beyond the desired limit. To avoid this'I have provided means for severing this film of paste. For this purpose I have mounted a curved blade 3! above the guide roller i6 and have provided 2!) means for moving the blade downwardly and causing the same to sever or break the paste film wh'enthe paste applying element is moved to its inoperative position. In the construction shown, the blade 31 is pivoted and is provided with a 26 crank arm 38 which is connected by a link 39 with one end of a lever 40 which is pivotally mounted between its ends on the main frame, as shown at M, and the other end of its lever is connected with the link 23 which actuates the paste $0 receptacle. The arrangement is such that when the link 23 is moved downwardly to withdraw the paste rollers the link 39 will be moved upwardly to impart'operative movement to the blade.
The operation of the apparatus will be readily understood from the foregoing description and it will be apparent that the movement of the paste applying element into and out of engagement with the tape at predetermined intervals causes paste to be applied only to spaced apart longitudinal portions of the tape and that the pasted tape is then folded about the ends of the bags with the pasted portions in proper relation to the bag and is then pressed against the bag to cause it to adhere thereto. The mechanism is very simple in construction and operation and can be produced at a low cost, or the paste applying mechanism may be readily applied to existing sewing machines or the like.
While -I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details thereof as various modifications may occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a. machine comprising feeding means to advance a series of collapsed bags with their open ends in substantial alinement, and means to for folding a tape about the open ends of said bags; a paste applying device having a part movable into and out of engagement with said tape.

In a device for intermittently applying paste to a moving tape, a. guide for said tape, a movable paste receptacle, a paste applying element mounted in said receptacle and movable thereby into and out of engagement with said tape, a movable blade to sever the paste film between said element and said tape, and means for simultaneously moving said element out, of engagement with said tape and causing said blade to sever said paste film.
5. In a tape attaching machine, means for feeding theftape in the direction of its length,
-a paste applying device having a part movable into and out of engagement with said tape as the latter is advanced by said feeding means, means operated in timed relation to said tape 5 feeding means to cause said part of said paste applying device to intermittently engage said tape and apply paste to separated portions thereof, and means controlled in accordance with the movement of said'part ofsaid paste applying 1o device to positively interrupt the application of paste to said tape when said part is moved out of engagement with said tape.
6.
