CORNELIUS B. VERONEE, OF ATHENS, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HlS R1GHT T0 JAMES BANCROFT, Ol SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TREADLE ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Fatemi; No. 204,776, dated June 11, 1878; application filed Mey 14,1878.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that- I, CORN'ELIUS B. VERO- NEE, of Athens, in the county of Olarke and State of Georgia, have inventedoertain new and useful Improvement-s in Motor Attachments for Sewing-Machines; and. I do hereby declare the following to be a, full, clear, and exact description of the inveution, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which ii: pertains to make and use referenee being had 1:0 the accompanying drawings, whioh form pari: of this speeification.
My iuvention relates t0 certain imprevements in motor-power attachments for sewingmachines; end consists in a constructiou as follows: v
An uprigho lever is pivoted to an elbowarm, which 1atter is adapted to be detaehab1y secured to any sewing-machine, the upper 01 free extremity of the lever being provided With a, horizontal cross-bar, rigidly secured thereto, and made in the form of a handle, so that it can be readily operated by the hand.
The opposite and. 1ower extremity of the lever is pivoted to a horizontal pitman, which connects With the usua1 driving-wheel of a sewin g-machine. This attaehment is intended to be used either as the sole actuating means in the operatwn of a sewing-machine, or in connection with a foot-treadle as an auxiliary to the actuation thereof.
Referring to thedrawings, Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of a machine provided with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a view of a modification.
The actuating-lever A is provided with a handle, a, secured to its upper extremity, and. adapted to be readily grasped by the band of the attenda-nt in operating the sewing-machine. Its lower central body is pivoted 'to the outer end of the horizontal portion of the elbow-arm B. The upper extremity of the upright portion of this supporting-arm is adapted to be detachably seeured to the machine by means of the slot I) and clampingscrew b.
To the lower extremity of the handmctuating lever a horizontal pitman, 0, is pivoted, and its opposite end conneets with the usua-l driving-wheel D of the machine. The pivot which secures the pitman to the driving-wheel isthe same which connects the pit-rnau of the v foot-treadle thereto when the latter is used. The hand-lever is, however, fully adeguate in all cases to drive the machine and primarily is designed for such purposes, though, a-s stated, it forms a very useful ai l to operate ghe machiue in conneotion With the foot-treadle."
If desired, my improvement may be secured to the machine so as to projeet; from its rear side, and. be operated by a child or Iady'on thai; side thereof, instead of from the front side, as is usual.
The hand-lever may also be adapted to serve y as means for actuating a fan, if so desired, as
illustrated in the drawings. Spring-clips a may be secured to the side of the upper body of the lever, and the handle of any suitable fan E be attachably secured in the same. In this manner, as the haud-lever is being operated, a constant fanning may be maintained, thus creating a pleasant breeze in the 1101; weather for the lady or other attendant.
In the view of the modification form, the attachment is adapted to be secured to the oute1 side of the end of. a sewing-machine, the pit- CORNELIUS B. VERONEE.
