The invention relates to outing equipment and more particularly to improvements in a valise, or the like, to which a. blanket has been added so that it, together with the valise, will form a convenient seat when placed on the ground, such for example as the sand of a beach or the grass in a park. The object of the invention is to provide an article which may be quickly and easily converted from a valise to a comfortable seat and which, when carried, will have the appearance of an ordinary valise and which can be used as such. Another object is to provide an article which will be light in weight, neat in appearance and inexpensive to manufacture, and which can be easily manipulated without previous experience or instruction.

These and various other objects and advantages will be readily understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawing of preferred embodiments of the invention, in which, however, modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the appended claims. Referring now to all the views, simultaneously, a valise is shown at It and its cover at H. The cover is hinged to the valise at E2 and the valise is made with tapered ends 13 and It so that the lower part of the valise is considerably narrower than the upper part. The cover is preferably provided with an upholstered pillow, or back-rest l5, and with brackets I6, which engage in notches I1, so that the cover may be secured at diiferent inclinations to the valise.

A blanket, or other fabric I8 is secured to the lower end of the valise. This blanket is preferably provided with an outer flap l9 and with a stiffening member 2!) to which snap fasteners 2i are secured. Co-acting snap fastening members 22 are secured on the top of the valise. The handle is shown at 23.

When the valise is carried, the flap I9 is folded on the blanket l8 and the blanket is pulled up over the pillow l5 and secured, by means of the snap fasteners, to the top of the valise, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. Not only do the snap fastening 1935, Serial No. 31,363 (01. -42) members secure the blanket to the valise, but the blanket secures the cover to the valise in its closed position. If it is desired to use the articles as a seat, the valise is laid on the ground, the snap fasteners pulled apart and the blanket folded over on the ground The cover may now be raised and placed at any angle to act as a back-rest. The person occupying the seat may either sit on the flap H9 or extend this flap so as to form a support under the feet.

In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the side Walls i3A and MA of the valise have been made rectangular and the cover pivoted between these side walls at MA, as plainly shown in the drawing. As the blanket is supported on the edges of the side members and the end of the blanket secured on top of the valise, the blanket will conform substantially to the shape of the end members and thus give the article the appearance of a regular valise. In Figs. 3 and 4 all the parts are numbered as in the other views, except that the letter A has been added to each of the numerals.

The blanket l8 and the flap l9 may be made of any suitable fabric, but it is preferably made in such a manner that the outer side of the blanket will match with the finish of the valise itself, so that, when folded up, it will have the same appearance as the rest of the valise. The interior of the valise may, of course, be arranged in any manner to suit the objects to be carried therein.

From the foregoing it will be seen that this article is very convenient for use at beaches and outings of other kinds, in that it not only forms a convenient seat, but provides a valise which may be used for carrying any articles desired.

Having described the invention and its objects, what I claim is new and wish to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. In an article of the class described, a. valise having its side members disposed angularly to each other, one of said side members forming a hinged cover, means for securing said cover at various angles to the valise, a blanket secured to the valise and adapted to be extended from the bottom thereof to form a seat when the valise is placed on the ground, the cover adapted to form a back-rest, and means for securing the free end of said blanket to the valise.

2. In an article of the class described, a valise having its side members disposed angularly to each other, one of said side members forming a hinged cover, a pillow secured on the outside of said cover, means for securing said cover at various angles to the valise, a blanket secured to the valise and adapted to be extended from the bottom thereto to form a. seat when the valise is placed on the ground, the cover adapted to form a back-rest, and means for securing the free end of said blanket to the top of the valise; said means together with the blanket comprising a locking device for holding the cover in its closed position.

3. In an article of the class described, a valise having its side members disposed angularly to each other, one of said side members forming a. hinged cover, a pillow secured on the outside of said cover, means for securing said cover at various angles to the valise, a blanket secured to the valise and adapted to be extended from the bottom thereof to form a seat when the valise is placed on the ground, a stifiening member secured intermediate of the ends of the blanket, the part of the blanket extending beyond the stiffening member foldable on the other part of the blanket, the cover adapted toform a back-rest, and means for securing the stiffening member to the top of the valise so as to cover said pillow and hold the cover of the valise in its closed position.

4. In an article of the class described, a valise having rectangular end members, a cover hinged between said end members and at an angle to the other side member, a pillow secured on the outside of said cover, means for securing said cover at various angles to the valise, a blanket secured to the valise and adapted to be extended from the bottom thereof to form a seat when the valise is placed on the ground, the cover adapted to form a back-rest, and means for securing the free end of said blanket to the top of the valise so as to cover said. pillow and hold the cover in its closed position.
