Application July 13, 1934, Serial No. 735,053
3 Claims.
This invention relates to furniture, and its general object is to provide a cabinet that is primarily designed for use in a bed room and preferably with respect to the sides of a bed or between twin beds, in that the cabinet includes an adjustable platform for disposal over a bedto be used as a writing surface or a table for meals and the like and without fear of the'cabinet falling or tipping, due to the fact that it is self-supporting and constructed to stabilize the overhang of the platform when fully extended for use, with articles and the like thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cabinet that can be moved with ease from place to place, and includes drawers and other storage space, as well as illuminating means and space for a radio, with means for controlling the illuminating means and radio from either side of the cabinet, and the latter also.includesconveniently arrangedoutlets for electrical apparatus such as a percolator, toaster, heating pad and the like, with the result it will be seen that the cabinet is extremely useful and convenient for the purpose intended in any room and place desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cabinet of the character set forth, that is reasonably simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient inuse and service.
This invention also consists in; certain other features of construction'and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detaiL'reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a front View of the cabinet which forms the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a rear view thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the cabinet.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 4-4 of Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 5-5 of Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view showing one of the switch and outlet plates.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference numeral l indicates the base of my cabinet which as shown includes a rectangular portion acting to receive the body of the cabinet and casters 3. However, the base may be of any 5 shape capable of performing its intended func-, tion, with any number of casters thereon.
The body of the cabinet includes a rear wall 4, side walls 5, a top 6 and a bottom 1, and the lower portion of the front of the cabinet is closed by a panel 8. Mounted for vertical movement within the cabi net so as to be adjusted to various heights is a platform including a body portion 9 which has secured to the underside, thereof a frame lllfof substantially rectangular formation, and the body portion has secured thereto and depending transversely therefrom what may betermed a shielding member H that is engageable withthe inner side of the panel 8 as best shown in Figure 3. The body member is provided with an extension or leaf l2 which is hingedly secured to the forward edge thereof and is held in operative position through the instrumentality of a sliding strip l3 that is mounted for slidable movement in the forward portion of the frame I0. 5
While other means may be used to hold the platform in its respective adjusted positions I show a latching means which includes a lever l4, the latter being pivotally secured to the underside of the body portion as at I5 and having pivotally secured to the inner end thereofanfarm I6. The lever also has pivotally secured thereto intermediate its ends, one end of an arm 11 that is relatively longer than the arm l 6 and the arms are arranged so that their outer ends are receivable in any pair of a plurality of superimposed bores l8 that are disposed in the inner surface of the side walls 5, and a coil spring l9 has its end convolutions engageable with the lever and a side of the frame H! in order to urge and hold the arms l6 and I! in companion bores.
PATENT OFFICE Arranged in the upper portion of the cabinet and centrally thereof is a compartment 20 which as shown is adapted to receive a loud speaker 2| of a radio instrument 22, the latter being arranged in the lower portion of the cabinet and preferably supported upon a shelf 23. It is obvious that the loud speaker is electrically connected to the instrument which is controlled by suitable means having control knobs 24 disposed upon opposite sides of the front of the cabinet as best shown in Figure 1. A suitable lamp for reading and the like is secured to the front of the cabinet at the upper end thereof and for distinction 2] that acts in the capacity as a night light, due
to the fact that the illuminating means which is I in the formfof an electric lamp extends from the rear wall 4 of the cabinet, so that it is amply Arranged upon the opposite sides, of the compartment 20 as well as the chamber 26 are drawer spaces to receive drawers 28 having suitable hanknobs as shown.
Thelower portion of the rear of the cabinet is open, so access may be had to a drawer that is carried bythe frame I0, whereby it is' raised and lowered with the platform, it being noted from Figure 3 that the' drawer is slidably mounted upon strips -29 securedlto the lower end of the confronting faces of the sides of the frame,.and' this open portionalsoallows access to the shelf 231as Well. as the space between the latter and ther bottom T." The open portion is closed by doors '30 having suitable handles thereon. t
' Arranged 'upon opposite-sides of the cabinet in convenient reach, are suitable boxes for switches 3| and outlets. 32,Lthere being a switch for the radio and each of the lamps, and or course the outlets are for electric apparatus suchias' a coffee percolato'r,toaster, heating pads andthe Inthe rear of the c'abinetI provide a plug-in receptacle 33-w hich is adapted to be in electriuse on either side of a bed or between twin beds,
' cal connectionQwith a suitable source of current to supply current to the respective electrical devices of the cabinet above-described.
Fromtheabove description; and disclosure of thefdrawing, zit will be obvious that I haveprovided aijcabinet that is' gqrimarily designed for as either occupant of thelatter can control the 7 electrical equipmentof the cabinetflthrough the medium of the switches and the cabinet canbe easily moved on its, casters-to any place to suit the convenience of the userfwithout'fear of tilting or tipping, and this is especially true when the platform is disposed overia" bed, due to the particular structure of the base, and of: course therplatfoi m can be adjuste'd'to various heights,
with'very little effort through the mediumof-the means shown for that "purpose. a w
llvhile'the cabinet is' designed for use at abd V a 2,046,222 is indicated by the reference numeral '25, while I arranged'below the compartment 20 is a-chamber 26 that has disposed therein illuminating means 7 invention will be readily apparent.
body. portion to carry the platform and engageform to balance the latter to prevent the cabiside; it isof course useful anyplace and for every purpose, where a cabinet of this'type i s de sired, especially for patients at home or in a hospital. 7 V r I I e The cabinet can be constructed of any suitable material and in any size and'shape, and of course can be decorated in any manner desired.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my I desire it to be understood that I'm :y make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts,
' provided that such changes fallwithin'the scope ofthe appended claims. V What I claim is:
