This invention relates to an improvement in adjustable die-heads of the type employing a plurality of individual dies or chasers mounted with capacity for concurrent uniform adjustment.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a superior die-head of the type referred to, in which a minimum number of members is employed.
Another object is to provide a durable and rugged adjustable die-head of the class described,
which may be produced at a low cost for manufacture.
A further object is to provide a superior adjustable die-head having maximum compactness,
especially as regards the length of its chaser-carrier portion and the adjusting-means associated therewith.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear to those skilled in the art from the following, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and appended claims, the
present invention includes all features disclosed therein which are novel over the prior art.

The particular adjustable die-head herein chosen for the illustration of the present invention includes a body-member, generally designated by the numeral 20, and comprising a flange-like head 2| and an integral cylindrical shank 22 extending rearwardly therefrom and, if desired, provided with an axial bore or passage 23.
The front face of the flange-like head 2| of the body-member 20 is formed with four (more or less) radial chaser-receiving grooves or guideways 24, each of which intersects at its inner end a recess 25 formed in the forward end of the body-member coaxially with the bore or passage 23 before described. The outer portion of each of the radial guide-ways 24 intersects the periphery of the head 2| and also the rear face thereof, as is especially well indicated in Fig. 9. One sidewall of each of the chaser-receiving guide-ways 2 is formed with a key-receiving groove 26 receiving a radially-extending retaining-key 21 of rectangular form in cross-section and secured in place by means of one or more pins 28 (Figs. 2 and 8) Mounted in each of the chaser-receiving grooves 24 in the head 2| of the body-member 20, with capacity for radial adjustment therein, is a chaser 29 provided at its inner end with a series of cutting-teeth 30 and having in one of its sidefaces a longitudinal groove 3| receiving the key 2'! of the particular radial guide-way 24 in which the chaser may be mounted. Each of the chasers 29 is formed in its rear face with a rearwardlyopening tangential cam-groove 32 for the reception of a given one of four correspondingly-sloping tangential cam-lugs 33 forwardly projecting from the front face of an adjusting-ring 34. The said adjusting-ring is mounted upon the periphery of the shank 22 of the body-member 20 immediately to the rear of the flange-like head 2| thereof, and adapted for rotary movement with respect thereto in a manner as will hereinafter appear.
The rear face of the head 2| of the bodymember 2!! is formed with a rearwardly-opening annular groove 35 which is intersected by the outer rear portion of the chaser-receiving guideways 24 and which results in the provision upon the head 2| of a rearwardly-extending flange 36. The groove 35, just referred to, provides for the clearance of the cam-lugs 33 of the adjustingring 34, which cam-lugs are overhung, so to speak, and concealed by the rearwardly-extending said flange 36.
The adjusting-ring 34 is held in place against the rear face of the flange-like head 2| of the body-member 20 by two (more or less) oppositely-located retaining-keys 31 each of which is mounted in a radial groove 38, respectively formed in the rear face of the adjusting-ring 34 wall of the groove 4 I, just referred to, and serves.

On the respective opposite sidesof the diametrical line extending therethrough, .the adjusting-r'ing 34 is formed with parallel threaded bores 43, 44, respectively receiving adjustingscrews 45, 45, each of which is preferably pro vided with a spherically-contoured inner end41.
The inner end of the adjusting-screw 45 enters into an obtuse-angled n'otch'48 formed in the shank 22 of the body-member 20 and normally has its spherically-contoured inner end 41 in engagement with the outwardly-facing 'wall 49 thereof. Similarly, the inner portion of the adjusting-screw 46 enters into a right-angled notch 50 formed in the said shank 22, and has its spherically-contoured inner end normally en-, gaged with the wall 5| thereof.
,Should itbe desired to increase the diameter 'of the thread cut bythe chasers 29, the following procedure may be followed: the screw 46 may be backed out 'of engagement with the wall 5| of the notch 55, after which the screw 45 may be :turned in the direction indicated by the arrow L (indicating the word larger) in Fig. 1. This turning of the screw 45 will serve to turn the adjusting-ring 34 downwardly as viewed in Fig. 1, and the degree of movement may be gauged by the movement of an index mark 52 on the said ring, with respect to a series of graduations 53 marked on the adjacent periphery of the flange-like head 2! of the body-member. When the desired degree of adjustment has been attained,the screw 45 may be now screwed tightly into engagement with the wall 5| of the notch 59 and the adjusting-ring will thus be locked. in its newly-adjusted position.
Should it be desired to reduce the diameter of the thread out by the chasers 29, the turning of the screw 45in the direction indicated by the arrow S (indicating the word smaller) in Fig. 1 will effect this result, after which the complementary adjusting-screw 46 may be tightened.
When it is desired to remove the chasers 29 from the die-head, the screw 46 may be backed out of the threaded bore 44 in the adjustingring 34 to such a degree as to retire its inner end 4'! beyond the inner periphery of the said ring. The adjusting-ring may now be turned in a clockwise direction until the side of the projecting inner end of the adjusting-screw 45 engages with the sloping wall 54 of the notch 48. The rotation of the ring, as just described, will serve to withdraw the cam-lugs 33 from the tangential cam-grooves 32 in the. rear face of each of the chasers 29, and the latter may be radially withdrawn from their respective chaser-receiving grooves 24. The engagement of the adjustingscrew 45 with the sloping wall 54 of the notch 48 thus serves to limit the movement of the said ring and indicates to the user that the adjusting-ring 34 has been moved to a suflicient degreeto permit the withdrawal of thechasers as described.
The invention may be carried out in other specific ways than that herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiment is therefore to be considered in' all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
I claim:
1. An adjustable die-head including in combination: a body having a flange-like head provided with a plurality of chaser-receiving guideways and a shank member extending rearwardly from the said head; an adjusting-ring member mounted with capacity for rotation upon the shank member of the said body immediately to the rear of the'said flange-like head and having cam-like means engageable with chasers mounted in the chaser-receiving guide-ways of the said head and adapted to shift such chasersi one of the said members being provided with a "retaining-groove; a retaining-key rigidly carried by one of said members and extending into the said groove in the other member directly between the said'adjustin'g-ring member andtheshank memher of the said body to hold the said adjustinga ring member against rearward axial displacement away from the said flange-like head but permitting the rotary movement thereof; and adjusting-means extending between the said adjusting-ring member and a portion of the said body and serving'to turn the said adjusting-ring member with respect to the said body. the forwardly-facing arcuate retaining-shoulder of the saidshank and serving to hold'the said adjusting-ring against rearward axial displacement away from the said flange-like head but permitting the rotary movement thereof; and adjusting-means extending between the said ad? justingj-ring and a' portion of the saidbodyand ing-ring mounted with capacity for rotation upon the shank of the said body immediately to the rear of the said'flange-like head and having camlike means engageable with chasers mounted in the chaser-receiving guide-ways of. the said head and adapted to shift such chasers; a plurality of retaining-keys secured to the rear face of the said adjusting-ring and extending inwardly for engagement with the substantially-annular forwardly-facing retaining-shoulder of the said shank and serving to hold the said adjusting-ring against rearward axial displacement away from 75 the said flange-like head but permitting the rotary movement thereof; and adjusting-means extending between the said adjusting-ring and a portion of the said body and serving to turn the said adjusting-ring with respect to the said body.
4. An adjustable die-head including in combination: a body having a flange-like head provided with a plurality of chaser-receiving guideways and a shank extending rearwardly from the said head and formed with two spaced-apart outwardly-opening V-shaped notches, one of which is of obtuse-angled form; an adjusting-ring mounted with capacity for rotation upon the shank of the said body immediately to the rear of the said flange-like head and having camlike means engageable with chasers mounted in the chaser-receiving guide-ways ofthe said head and adapted to shift such chasers; retainingmeans serving to hold the said adjusting-ring against the rearward axial displacement away from the said flange-like head but permitting the rotary movement thereof; and a pair of spacedapart adjusting-screws extending substantially parallel to each other and having their inner ends respectively entered into the V-shaped notches in the said shank and serving to turn the said adjusting-ring with respect to the said body, one of the said adjusting-screws being positioned to have its side engage with one wall of the said obtuse-angled notch in the said shank to limit the turning movement of the said adjusting-ring.
