Description

B. F. CULLHSON ADVERTISING DISPLAY DEVICE Filed April 12, 1935 INVENTOR as ATTORNEY Patented June 30, 1936 UNE'E'ED STATS HIE star
ADVERTISING DISPLAY DEVICE Application April 12, 1935, Serial No. 15,948
1 Claim.
This invention relates toand has for an object to provide an advertising display device and more particularly a device for visibly demonstrating certain physical characteristics of lubricating oil such as the color and transparency of the oil when exhibited in the form of a thin film.
In the drawing,-
Fig. 1 is a View in vertical section of a display device embodying the present invention, and- Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device shown in section in Fig. 1.
By reference to the drawing it will be seen that an oil reservoir or tank It is suitably supported within an open-top cabinet or housing II which is adapted to rest upon the floor of the room in which the display is exhibited. An oil pump I2 and an electric motor l3 for operating the pump are positioned within the cabinet II. A pipe l4 connects the suction side of the pump with the tank H from which oil is constantly drawn while the pump is in operation.-
To the pressure side of the pump l2 there is connected a pipe l5 which is provided with a control valve 55 and which extends upwardly through the bottom of the tank Ill and communicates with the space between two concentrically arranged pipes H and I8 which extend upwardly from the bottom of and to a point substantially above the top of the tank ill. Pipes I! and! may be secured in this vertical position in any desired manner. Both pipes are open at their upper ends which are concealed from view by a loosely fitting cap is mounted in the end of the inner pipe l8. An opening 26 registering with the lower end of pipe 18 may be provided in the bottom of the tank it to provide an air vent for the cabinet I l A plurality of annular discs 2| are horizontally mounted at spaced intervals on pipe l1, the lowest disc being of the greatest diameter and each succeeding disc above being progressively of smaller diameter, so that the smallest disc is at the top and the largest at the bottom. The distance between each pair of discs may be the same or may vary, as desired.
The oil reservoir or tank It may have its open top protected by a screen 22 for the purpose of preventing the entry of any foreign material.
In operation oil is withdrawn from the tank In through pipe l4 and is forced by pump I2 through pipe 15 to the space between pipes I'I and IS. The oil is forced upwardly in quantities regulated by the valve it through this space between the pipes and finally flows over the edge of pipe I! onto the uppermost disc 2|. The oil spreads out evenly over this disc and overflows 5 the edge descending to the disc below in the form of a continuous, thin annular film. The oil continues to flow successively from one disc to another until it finally flows from the lowermost disc back into the reservoir. As oil is pumped l0 continuously through the space between pipes I1 and i8 there is a continuous downward flow of oil over the edges of the several discs 2| and between each pair of discs there is presented to view a thin transparent annular film of oil. In 15 this manner one viewing the display can readily see the clear color of the oil which is presented by the thin transparent film through which one can see even to the extent of being able to read ordinary print held behind the display.
' Obviously many modifications and variations of the invention, as hereinbefore set forth, may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and therefore only such limitations should be imposed as are indicated in the ap- 25 pended claim and by the prior art.
I claim:
A device for visibly displaying certain physical characteristics of lubricating oil comprising a cabinet, an oil reservoir disposed in the top of the cabinet and formed with a centrally disposed opening in the bottom thereof, a pump disposed in said cabinet, a pair of concentrically arranged pipes extending upwardly from the bottom of the reservoir with the inner of said pipes in registration with the opening in the bottom of the reservoir, a plurality of superimposed spaced discs disposed on the outer of said pipes above the reservoir, a pipe for supplying oil from the reservoir to the intake side of the pump, a pipe connecting the outlet side of the pump with the space between the concentrically arranged pipes, and means for operating said pump to force regulated quantities of oil from the reservoir upwardly through the space between the concentrically arranged pipes from the upper end of which the oil flows downwardly in an unbroken annular film successively from one disc to another until returned to the reservoir.
