Description
Uurrng'rarns PA OFFTGMEIF CARRIE A. MUNRO, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT IN VAPOR-BATHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,500, dated June 4, 1878 application filed April 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mrs. CARRIE AURELIA MUNRO, of the city and county of Salt Lake, in Utah Territory, have invented a new and Improved Vapor-Bath, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved vapor-bath. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on line :0 ac in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
7 The object of my invention is to provide a portable, compact, and convenient vapor-bath, in which a bath may be taken either in a sitting or reclining posture.
The invention consists in a box of peculiar form, having neck-apertures for both the sitting and reclining postures, and containing a removable cot, a stool, and vaporizing apparatus, as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing, A is the box or main portion of the vapor-bath, of which a is the foot and b the head. The floor of the bath is divided into four sections, 0 d e f, of different level. The foot-section c is lowest, and supports the vaporizing apparatus g The section 0 is a little higher than the sectionc, c, and supports the seat h. The section d lies between the sections 0 e, and is raised above them. The section f is higher than the other sections, and inclines downward slightly toward the section 0.
Cleats i are secured to the sides j k of the vapor-bath, and incline slightly from the head toward the foot of the bath, for supporting the cot l, which is provided with transverse and longitudinal strips of webbing for supporting the body of the subject. The cot is also provided with handles at its sides for introducing it into and removing it from the bath.
The bath is provided with two doors, m n. The larger door at is to admit the patient, and the smaller door a is provided with a glass panel, and slides in guides in the side of the bath, and is designed to cover the aperture through which the vaporizing apparatus is adjusted.
The highest portion of the box is above the floor-section e, and contains two apertures, o
12, both of which are provided with suitable covers. The aperture 0 is designed for the escape of vapor, and the aperture 1) receives the neck of the patient, aportion,q, of the top being removable, to admit of placing the neck in the said aperture. From the highest portion the box-top is inclined downward toward each end.
The inclined portion 1' is removable, being inserted in grooves in the sides j k. It is provided with a neck-aperture, s, which may be closed by the slide t.
At the end of the box, below the neck-aperture 8, there is a bracket or rest, a, for receiving a small pillow for supporting the head of the patient when in a reclining position.
The top of the box, over the section 0 d, is sloped downward toward the foot end of the bath, which is inclined toward it.
The vaporizing apparatus consists of a tripod stand, 0;, whose legs rest in a pan, to. The pan to contains an alcohol-lamp, a, having a removable top, b. The tripod stand supports a shallow pan, 0, for containing the liquid or substances to be vaporized.
The manner of usin g myimproved vapor-bath is as follows: If the patient desiresto sit during the treatment, he enters the bath through the door m, and is seated on the stool h. The neck is placed in the neck-opening p, and the removable portion q is inserted and the door m closed. Vapor is then generated from liquid contained by the pan 0 by means of heat from the lamp a. When aperson who is too feeble to sit is to be treated, the cot l is employed. The person being placed thereon is placed in the bath through the end, and the head is permitted to rest on a pillow placed on the bracket u.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A vapor-bath provided with top and end apertures for receiving the neck, and having a pillow-support, u, substantially asherein shown and described.
2. The cot I, having the transverse and longitudinal strips of webbing, in combination with the box A, having cleatsi, as herein shown and described.
3. A vapor-bath box, A, having an apertured top, with removable portion q, and having the removable inclined end'piece r and neck-aperture s, substantially as shown and described.
CARRIE AURELIA MUNRO.
