Application February 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in water heating devices for gas ranges and particularly for gas ranges of the closed top type.
The object of the invention is toprovide a novel, inexpensive and e'icient water heating unit adapted to occupy a position between the closed top of the range and the fire brick beneath the same and to surround the flame from the gas burner which is enclosed by the fire brick. The invention aims to provide a heating unit which may rest upon and be supported by the re brick and which may be connected to a water circulating system, and which is constructed to permit circulating water to pass freely through the same, and which provides a Water passage formed Within a pipe of non-corrodible metal which is embedded in a casting having heat collecting flanges projecting therefrom.
The invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention,
Figure 1 is a top View, partly in section, of a gas range provided with water heating means embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through a portion of the range, on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the pipe forming the water passage of the water heating annulus or ring.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the water heating annulus.
Figures 5, 6 and '7, are sectional details of the water heating annulus, on lines 5-5, 6-6 and 1 -1, respectively of Fig. 4.
Figure 8 is a detail of a portion of the water heating annulus showing the water inlet and the water outlet thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 3 designates the frame of the range, 4 the gas burner therein, 8 the lire brick enclosing the burner, and 9 the top plate supported by the frame 3 above the re brick 8 and burner 4 in spaced relation thereto.
The frame 3 surrounds a combustion chamber Ill which is formed between the top plate 9 and the burner Il and re brick 8. When the burner 4 is in operation, air enters the chamber I0 through a passage I I in the frame 3 and through air passages in the burner 4, and the products of combustion pass from the chamber I0 into lateral ues I2 through perforations in the walls thereof and thence to and through vertical flues I3, in the usual manner well known in this art.
Located within the combustion chamber I0 and 5, 1935, Serial N0. 5,061
supported upon the re brick 8 ls an annular casting I4 which surrounds the space above the burner 4 so as to surround the flame o-f the burner when it is in operation.
The annular casting III may be formed of aluminum or any other suitable metal and it has embedded therein and entirely enclosed within its walls a helical water pipe I5 which is formed of suitable non-corrodible metal such as copper. The lower helix of the pipe I5 has a water inlet end portion I6 and the upper helix of the pipe I5 has a water outlet end portion I'I above the inlet portion I6.
In producing the annular casting Id, the pipe I5, as shown in Fig. 3, is placed within the mold for the casting and the metal which forms the body of the casting is then poured into the mold in a manner to enclose the pipe and embed the same within finished casting, as illustrated in the drawings.
The end portions I6 and I1 of the pipe I5 j open into lower and upper hollow bosses I8 and I9, which project from the casting and are lnteriorly screw threaded for the reception of the Athreaded ends of pipes 20 and 2|, respectively, Fig. l. The pipes 20 and 2| form continuations of the inlet and outlet end portions I6 and I'I, respectively, of the pipe I5 and they lead to and from a suitable storage vessel or boiler (not shown) for hot water, so that water heated with- L,
in the pipe I5 will circulate through the same and the pipes 20 and 2| and the storage vessel or boiler to which they are connected.
The casting I4 is provided with upwardly and downwardly extending flanges 22 and 23 and with inwardly and outwardly extending flanges 24 and 25, respectively. These flanges are provided to collect the heat within the combustion chamber I0 and transmit it to the main body of the casting I4 and the pipe I5 embedded therein to heat the water circulating through the pipe I5.
The bottoms of the lower anges 23 rest upon the re brick 8 and the upper ends of the upper flanges 22 are in close proximity to the bottom of the top plate 9 of the range, thereby providing passages between the flanges 22 above the main body of the casting I4 and between the flanges 23 below the main body of the casting I4 through which the gases of combustion may pass from the interior to the exterior of the annular casting I ll and thence through the flues I2 to the flues I3. This construction and arrangement of parts provide an effectual means for heating the water circulating through the pipe I5 when the burner 4 is in operation.
I claim as my invention:
l. A water heater for gas ranges, comprising an annular casting having adjacent upper and lower, outwardly projecting, integrally formed, threaded bosses for connection to a water circulating system, and having a helical water pipe embedded therein, the lower helix of the pipe opening into the lower boss and the upper helix of the pipe opening into the upper boss, said casting having radially extending, heat collecting iianges projecting from the top and from the bottom thereof, and inclined inwardly and outwardly extending heat collecting anges.
2. A water heater for gas ranges, comprising an annular casting having adjacent upper and lower, outwardly projecting, integrally formed, threaded bosses for connection to a water circulating sys'- tem, and having a helical water pipe embedded therein, the lower helix of the pipe opening into the lower boss and the upper helix of the pipe opening into the upper boss, said casting having heat collecting ianges projecting upwardly from the top of the body of the casting and having heat collecting flanges projecting downwardly from the bottom of the body of the casting, the upper and lower surfaces of the body of the casting following the lines of the adjacent helices therein and the upper ends of the upper flanges and the lower ends of the lower flanges being substantially in parallel planes.
