Description
M. L. HALL.
Grain Cleaher. I No. 20,425. Patented June 1, 1858.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARQUIS L. HALL, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
GRAIN-CLEANING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,425, dated June 1, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARQUIS L. HALL, of
Bridgeport, in the State of Connecticut,
' scribe its construction and operation.
I construct a cylinder of iron or other suitable metal consisting of the three parts A A A. The top part of this cylinder is used as a receiver or hopper and furnished with a waste pipe for the purpose of conveying back to the elevators, all the grain received into the hopper over and above the quantity necessary for the filling of the securing apartment. The central partof the cylinder, which has a smaller diameter than the top or bottom part, contains the scouring apparatus; and the lower or bottom part of the cylinder contains the fan.
0 C represent the blast pipes, one of which conveys a blast to the grain during its fall from the screen into the hopper. The other blast pipe blows away the dust, which is scoured off from the grain. These pipes are connected with the cylinder; and the whole is placed securely in a frame D D D D.
E represents the screen for receiving the grain from the elevators and for conveying it to the hopper or receiver.
F F represents a vertical spindle, running through the screen, the smut pipe and the cylinder. Near the lower end of the cylinder there is a pulley G for the purpose of turning the same.
H H represents the arrangement for scouring the grain. The same is composed of fiat steel strips or blades passing through an opening or slot in the spindle.
The strips or blades are placed in the slot (1,) in the spindle (F,) Fig. 3, at a suitable distance apart, and so kept by placing plates of metal, (or other suitable material) between them; and the whole series of steel blades, and plates, are firmly secured in their position, by placing a key or wedge over the top of them in the slot.
WV hen the pulley is turned around, the spindle and the blades thereon will be turned likewise, and the latter will be driven through a mass or body of grain edgewise.
This construction will enable the operator to drive at a great speed without carrying the grain before the blades. This machine admits of an easy operation, provided the cylinder be smooth; and the friction between the blades and the grain and the kernels between one another will be so great that the kernels will be scraped.
The application of this grain cleaner to buckwheat is of special advantage, for it scrapes and cleans off the blow from the grain, the removal of which will prevent its pulverizing and the blackening of the flour.
Of the above described machine, and what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of a series of flat steel springs or blades placed horizontally and parallel with each other, and secured by a wedge or key in a slot or opening in the spindle; constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose above described.
MARQUIS L. HALL.
