MILK STIRRING AND COOLING DEVICE Filed March 26, 193 5 I 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented May 26, 1936 UNITE STATES 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a device for cooling milk and for storing the same while it is being cooled to promote rapid cooling of the milk.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of a chamber forming part of the invention.
Figures 3 and 4 are detail views taken substantially on the lines 33 and 4-4 respectively of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a pivoted water receptacle.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of an agitator. Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that the invention comprises a water tank 5 having metallic side walls, a bottom wall 6 of wood or other suitable material, lined with a sheet I of metal or the like having down turned flanges fitting snugly between the edges of the bottom 6 and the side walls of the tank. Also for the tank there is provided a removable lid 8 having an opening 8a. with which is aligned one end of a water supply pipe 9, and a slot ID in which operates a flexible element, in the present instance, a chain II.
The chain II at one end is suitably connected with the upper edge of a wall of a Water tank I2. The water tank I2 is mounted on a pivot I3 extending between opposed walls of the chamber or tank 5, whereby the tank I2 is mounted to swing vertically within the chamber or main tank 5. Adjacent the bottom thereof, the front wall of the tank 5 is provided with a discharge opening from which extends a spout I4.
In the region of the spout I4 there is secured to the bottom 6 of the tank 5 an inverted U-shaped clamp member I5 one leg of which is provided with a clamping screw I6.
A cooling tank I8 of suitable capacity is adapted to have the edge of one wall thereof secured by the clamp I5, the screw I6 binding one wall of the coolingtank I8 against the free leg of the clamp I5 as clearly shown in Figure 1. Adjacent its open top the cooling tank I8 is provided with an overflow pipe l9 leading therefrom. It will thus be seen that the cooling tank I8 is so secured relative to the tank 5 that water from the tank 5 discharging through the nozzle I4 will pass into the cooling tank I8 and around the milk pail 26 located therein for cooling the contents of the pail 20.
For stirring the milk contents of the pan 20 there is provided an agitator in the form of a rod 2| provided on one end with a head 22 in the form of a disk as shown. At its upper end the rod 2I is formed with an eye or otherwise provided for connection with the free end of the 5 chain or flexible element 1 I.
The chain or flexible element II is trained over suitable pulleys or sheaves 23 mounted in brackets 24 secured to the top wall or ceiling of the room in which the apparatus is located and 10 as clearly suggested in Figure 1.
In operation, the parts are normally in the position shown in full lines in Figure 1. To cool and stir the milk incidental to the cooling thereof, water from the pipe 9 empties into the recepl5 tacle I2 and when a suitable water level is reached in the receptacle I2, the latter is caused to swing about its pivot I3 from the full line position shown in Figure 1 to the dotted line position shown in said figure. The swinging of the 20 receptacle I2 in this manner will exert a pull on the chain II causing the stirrer rod 2| and its head 22 to move upwardly for agitating the contents of the pail 20.
Obviously, when the receptacle 20 upsets in the 25 manner just mentioned, the water contents thereof will flow therefrom and through the spout It to empty into the tank I8, the water filling the tank and serving to cool the milk contents of the tank 20. 30
When the receptacle I2 is thus emptied of its water contents the same under weight of the agitator will be caused to swing back to the full line position for receiving another charge of water from the pipe 9. Upon swinging movement of 35 the receptacle I2 from the dotted. line position to the full line position, the stirrer rod 2| and its head 22 will move downwardly toward the bottom of the milk pail 26. Thus it will be seen that a reciproca'tory movement is imparted to the stirrer for agitating the milk contents of the pail 20, as said contents are also being cooled by the circulation of water through the tank I8, the water as before mentioned entering the tank from the spout I4 and overflowing from the tank through 45 the overflow I9.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a device of the character described a tank adapted to receive a cooling fluid, and a con- 50 tainer the contents of which are to be cooled, a second tank having adjacent one side thereof U- shaped bracket means adapted to straddle the wall of the first tank and screws carried by said U-shaped bracket means for clamping engage- 2 A I 2,042,108 r ment with said wall of the first tank, said second tank having at said one side thereof a discharge nozzle arranged to direct fluid into the first tank, a receptacle for the cooling fluid pivotally mounted in the second tank for vertical swinging movement and arranged to discharge the contents thereof into the second tank for passage from the second tank into the first named tank, sheaves adapted to be secured from a ceiling or suitable tacle whereby the swinging movement of said 5 receptacle will cause the stirring device to be raised and lowered within the container the contents of which are to be cooled.
