Patented May 26, 1936 UNITED STATES 12 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination mirror and comb; and has for one of its objects the provision of a mirror which can be folded and which will house a comb between its folded portions with means to hold the mirror and comb in assembled position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a compact device in which the longitudinally exposed edge of the comb will fit flush with and be 1 of the same appearance as the edges of the mirror when the parts are in folded position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for holding the mirror and the comb assembled, which means will have no protruding 15 portion.
Another object of the invention is to improve the construction of themirro-r so that its sections will locate in desired parallel or aligned position to enhance the performance of the device.
20 Another object of the invention is a more efficient formation of the hinges by a reduced number of parts; and yet form a stronger construction and operation of the parts than has heretofore been had.
25 With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
30 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the combined mirror and comb in folded position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the mirror unfolded; p
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the comb;
35 Fig. 4 is a central sectional view through Figure 2 and on substantially line 4-4 thereof Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the sections of the mirror;
- Fig. 6 is a sectional view on substantially line 40 66 of Figure 1;
Fig. '7 is a perspective view of the metal channel piece which is attached to the comb;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one portion of the frame for the mirror;
45 Fig. 9 is a perspective iew of the cooperating portion of the frame for the mirror.
It is customary for women to carry in their bags a comb which is frequently referred to as an evening comb; and in order that a mirror may 50 be provided which will not take up much greater volume than the comb alone, I have formed this mirror in two sections which are hinged together to fold and be positioned along either side of the comb and provided a clip on the comb which will 55 hold the parts in folded position; and I have so ried about in the pocket or handbag of the user; 5"
and the following is a more detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished:
With reference to the drawing, I provide two 10 sections l0 and H which are hinged together as at l2 to fold into substantially parallel relation as illustrated in Figure 1, and housing a comb designated generally l3, between them.
Each of these sections l0 and H consists of 'a shell M which is struck from a sheet of flat stock forming a plain plate l5 with end flanges l6 and H, a side flange l8, and lips l9 and extending inwardly longitudinally a short distance along the opposite inner side of the shell. There is also provided a portion 2| which is struck in from the outer surface of the shell midway of its length providing a recess 22 for the reception of the holding clip on the comb, as will be more fully hereinafter described.
There is also formed a cooperating U-shaped frame designated 2 consisting of an elongated strip of stock 25 with arm portions 26 extending at right angles thereto. This frame 2d is positioned against the edges of the flanges l6, l1 and I8 and the lips I9 and 20 and is there soldered to hold it in position, it being notched as at 21 to register with the recessed. portion 22 of the shell. On the end of one of the arms 26 a pair of eyes 28 are rolled. while on the end of the other arm 26 a single eye 29 is rolled. The frames 24 which I assemble with each shell it, although identical in both sections, are reversed on one section with reference to their position on the other section so that the eye 29 will fit between 0 the eyes 28 for the reception of a pivot pin 30 for hingedly mounting the two sections together.
A mirror 3i having beveled edges 32 is formed in two sections and inserted into each of the shells after the frames 24 are assembled therewith, and by reason of their beveled edges when forced into position slightly flex the frames 24 and firmly and tightly engage the same so as to be maintained in desired position in each section and so arranged that their unbeveled edges33 will meet to form a snug or tight joint when the sections are folded, as shown in Figure 2, so that this joint will not be objectionable during use.
The frames 24 are provided with abutment protuberances 34 and 35 folded up from the edge thereof which engage one with the other and form a limit for the closing movement of the sections so that they are in substantially parallel relation when in folded position.
The comb designated I3 is of substantially the length of the mirror sections and is provided with a channel-shaped metal edge strip 36 which receives the reduced portion 37 of the comb so that its outer surface 38 is flush with the surface 39 of the comb when secured thereon. Midway between the ends of the metal strip or channel section, the walls are cut and bent outwardly and then rolled inwardly so as to provide a resilient finger or clip 40.
In use, when one has finished looking in the mirror and using the comb, the mirror is folded so as to dispose the sections l9 and II substantially parallel. The comb is then inserted between these sections and the clip 48 positioned in the recesses 22 and over the protuberances 4| along the edges of the recesses 22 to firmly grip the opposite sections and hold them in position.
The top or outer surface 42 of this portion or clip is flush with back of the channel 36 and is also flush with the edges 43 of the mirror so as to form a very compact assembly of the comb and folded portions of the mirror.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
