MILK PASTEURIZING AND COOLING UNIT Filed Aug. 28, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented May 19, 1936 UNIT ED STATES PATENT F'F'I CE Application August 28, 1935, Serial No. 38,251 In Great Britain April 23, 1935 3Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in heat exchange and pasteurizing apparatus and more particularly to the simplification of such apparatus designed for treating liquids such as milk and beer.
Plate heat exchanger coolers and heaters for milk, beer and the like are already well known, and the common method of circulating the water and brine used as the heating and/or cooling medium is by means of pumps.
An essential object of the present apparatus is to provide for compactness in design and ease of cleaning combined with a neat appearance and economy of floor space. Floor space is an important item in these days of highly rated buildmgs.
Briefly stated my invention comprises a heat exchange and pasteurizing apparatus for heating and/or cooling liquids in which a hollow standard is adapted to support one or more of the heat exchange units in a position for use and to form a common container for the pump, tank, thermostatic valves and other elements necessary for carrying out the heating and/or cooling processes in said units.
My invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a side View of a standard and two heat exchange units supported on opposite sides of said standard,
Figure 2 shows a plan View of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 shows a side View with the wall of the combined hollow standard and container broken away to expose the contents of the container.
In the construction shown in the drawings, the arrangement illustrated is that described and claimed in my co-pending patent application Serial No. 38,250 filed the 28th August, 1935 in which the cast iron supporting standard forms the support for opposite series of heat exchanger plates 2 supported on the standard by means of cast iron hinge carriers 3 and double hinges or knuckles 4. All the plates in a series or nest are maintained in position when closed by the end cover plates 6 and the main bolts 1. The nests of heat exchanger plates are separated in regard to their various functions by means of insulated division plates 5. It should be understood that the present invention is not limited to this construction and if desired the heat exchanger plates may be rigidly attached to the standard, the series of plates not being divided by insulated division plates.
According to the present invention all the necessary components are carried. on or housed within the combined standard and container the interior of. which container isshown in'Figure 3. The main stream supply to be heated comes through valve and pipe Ill, proceeds through the 5 thermostatically controlled valve ll into steam and water mixing tank l2. This tank is provided with a thermo relay operating automatic water valve I3. The heated water passes out of the tank [2 by pipe I4 down into pump I5 which 10 is driven by the motor I6 along pipe I1 and through a header [3 which has a series of outlets corresponding with each plate element 2. The circulating water passes into and returns from the plate elements 2 through the flexible 15 pipes 9, into the header I9 and back to tank l2 through pipe 20.
In the apparatus shown, after processing, the liquid to be cooled passes through the nest of plate elements 2 shown on the left hand side of the 20 drawings. The cooling medium is usually water or brine. The Water is admitted in the illustrated plant through the pipe 2 I, the header 22 and the flexible connections 9 to the first series of six plate elements 2 and returned through header 23 25 and from thence passesthrough pipe 24 to a header at the back of the header l8 then through the first three plate elements or pre-heating section on the right hand side of Figure 2, and then through a header behind the header I9 through 30 the pipe 25 down to the drain. Brine for further cooling is admitted through pipe 26 and the header behind header 22 through the three plates 2 shown on left hand side of drawings, and out through header at back of header 23 to pipe 21 35 leading to brine storage tank. The condensed water is discharged from the tank I2 through the pipe 28, the pipe and valve 29 is a drain for use in frosty weather or like conditions and the pipe 30 is a compressed air connection.
Before beginning the process of cooling liquids like milk or beer it is essential to sterilize the surfaces across which these liquids will pass. This sterilization is obtained in the apparatus shown by admitting compressed air through pipe 45 30 into the cooling water header 22 and into the brine header 23 immediately behind this. The valves on pipes 2| and 26 are shut and the water and brine are forced out of the plate elements 2 by the compressed air and thus emptied. Steam 50 is then admitted through the milk or beer pipe 8 to the spaces between the plate elements and the heat exchange surfaces of the now empty plates are raised to sterilizing temperature.
In the construction shown in the drawings the 55 standard is of pyramidal form and three doors 3| are provided on each side of the standard for access to the pump, thermostatic valves and other elements.
What I claim is:-
1. Apparatus for the interchange of heat between two streams of fluids comprising a hollow standard forming a container, a pump, tank, thermostatic valves and other elements necessary for carrying out the heating and/or cooling processes in the heat exchange between the two streams of fluids mounted within the container, a heat exchange unit mounted on the exterior surface of said standard and means connecting said elements in the container with said heat exchange unit.
2. Apparatus for the interchange of heat between two streams of fluids comprising a hollow four-sided standard forming a closed container, a pump, tank, thermostatic valves, and other elements necessary for carrying out the heating and/or cooling processes in the heat exchange between the two streams of fluids mounted within the container, a pair of heat exchange units mounted on opposite sides of said standard, opposite doors in the free sides of said standard adapted to provide access on opposite sides to said elements within its interior and means connecting said elements in the container with said heat exchange units.
3. Apparatus for the interchange of heat between two streams of fluids comprising a hollow four-sided standard of pyramidal shape forming a closed container, a pump, tank, thermostatic valves and. other elements necessary for carrying out the heating and/ or cooling processes in the heat exchange between the two streams of fluids mounted within the container, a pair of heat exchange units mounted on opposite sides of said standard, opposite doors in the free sides of said standard adapted to provide access on opposite sides to said elements within its interior and means connecting said elements in the container 20 with said heat exchange units.
