Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
HENRY S. FIFIELD, OF NEW HAMPTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS FORCOOKING.
Specicatlion forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,144, dated May 28, 1878; application filed 4May 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. FIFIELD, of New Hampton, in the county of Belknap and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps for Cooking, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my lamp without the cooking attachment, and Fig. 2a perspective view of the cooking attachment.
' In the drawings, A represents the oil-vessel, of any convenient form, a broad base being essential that it may stand securely.
B is a metallic base-plate, secured, by means of proper supports a', a short distance above and to the top a of the oil-reservoir, and leaving a space, b, between the top of such oilreservoir and the bottom of the base-plate, in which are conveniently placed the ratchets o, which operate the wicks. This base-plate B is provided with openings d, to admit air through the space b for combustion, as will be presently described.
A supporting-plate, C, having perforations e, is secured above and to the base-plate B by means of proper supports e'. This support- -ing-plate C is made of thin sheet metal, is
somewhat smaller than the base-plate B, and has flan ges f bent outwardly, and divided in numerous places, so as to present numerous spring portions g to-.rest against and hold more securely the cooking attachment, presently to be described.
The wick-tubes D pass through the plates B and C, and rise a little above the latter.
Upon the base-plate B the cooking attachment E is placed, resting upon such baseplate. This attachment is preferably made Vof suitable thin metal, and has a base, h, an-
nular in form,`with vertical walls of such height that when the attachment is placed upon the lamp and resting upon the base-plate the spring-flanges g of the plate G will hold it steadily. This attachment has a body, t', preferably shaped like the body ofa globe or lamp-chimney, and upon that a flat top, j, With openings k, lfor the .escape ofthe products of combustion and the heated air. Within this top j is fitted a grating, l.
Near the bottom of the body i of the attachment is a mica window, m, to enable the condition of the light to be noticed.
'It will be observed, in the operation of my device, that the air for combustion enters through the openings in the base-plate B, and passes through the perforations of the supporting -plate (l, where it is delivered to the flame.
In the use of my apparatus, the wicks being lighted, and the attachment being placed 'upon the lamp, the air in the interior of the attachment becomes speedily very hot, and the hot air and the products of combustion escape out of the top of the attachment. Now, any proper dish'being placed upon the top j, water may be speedily and conveniently boiled, or any cooking `may be' carried on.
The advantages of my construction for use in the sick-room, or in the summer season when it is not desirable to use cooking-stoves, are apparent upon observation.
I am aware that lamps for cooking were.
well known before my invention hereinbefore described, and also lamps with separate and removable cooking attachments, and also cooking-lamps wherein base and supporting plates were used 5 and I am not aware that there is novelty in any of the elements employed "by me; but I do not know that the same elements as constructed by me have ever been used in the same combination. Having thus -described my invention, what I claim as new therein, for which I desire Letters Patent, isg In lamps for cooking, the lamp A, provided with the plates B and C, and the attachment E, having a base, h, adapted to rest upon the plate B and be held in position by the plate O, and having an enlarged body, i, and a top, j, adapted for a grating, the several parts constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
l HENRY s'EIFIELD.
