"- railway house car in which a door opening formed in a side thereof is adapted to be closed by a sliding door and in which a gutter or trough is provided at the upper portion of the opening in the closed position of the door for trapping and draining 01T water outwardly of the door without necessitating coping of the posts disposed at the vertical portions of said opening or`of the guard strip or the like secured to the posts to permit such drainage.
A further object is to provide a sliding car door,
the upper horizontal margin of which is reinforced by a member presenting a gutter or trough Vfor catching and draining Water or the like outwardly of said door.
A further object is to provide a single panel door having a trough along its upper horizontal margin for collecting and draining water outwardly of said door.
A further object is to provide a sliding car door, the upper margin of which is reinforced by a member secured upon the outer face of said door and presenting a trough for the collection 4and drainage of water loutwardly of said door. A further object is to provide a slding car door carrying a member presenting a trough upon the upper horizontal margin thereof, said member being incorporated in the door so as to provide an extension of the panel of the door, thereby permitting a decrease in the height of the panel.

The invention illustratedin, the drawing is directed to an improvement upon the invention disclosed in the patent to-G. R. Treptow, No. 1,943,640, January 16, 1934. In this patent a substantially J shaped header is utilized to provide a trough for the purpose of collecting and carrying ofi water or the like which may be forced over the upper edge of the door. Disposal of the water 'so collected outwardly of the door is provided for by the extension of the header beyond lthe rear door post and for this purpose it was necessary to cope or modify the door post in order to permit such extension. By applicants improvement the labor and expense of the coping operation of the post is avoided while the desirable feature of preventing ingress of water or the like into the car is retained.
Referring to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, the numeral I0 designates generally a portion of the side of Y a railway house car provided with the customary opening Il dened in partV by means ofV a side plate l2 and front and rear vertical door posts I3 and Ill.V 'Ihe opening I I is adapted to be closed by means of a car door I5 which is preferably mounted for sliding movement upon the car side I0. The car door selected for purposes of illustration comprises a metallic panel I6 which may be provided with spaced horizontal corrugations I1, merging at their 4ends with vertical corrugations I8 and I9 formed in the panel. A reinforcing substantially channel shaped member 20 is secured to the front margin of the metallic panel I6 and is adapted to coact with a front stop 2l in order to weatherproof said margin of the door. A reinforcing angle member 22 is secured to the rear margin of the door, this member comprising a flange 23 disposed upon and securedV to the outer face of the metallic panel and a transversely extending flange 24 ydirected toward the side of the car. A sealing strip 25 is secured upon the inner face of the metallic panel I6 and is adapted to coact with a guard strip 2B in order to weatherproof the rear margin of the door.
The upper horizontal margin of the door is adapted to be reinforced by means of a substantially Y shaped member 21 Vwhich presents a trough 28 and a depending securing Iiange 29. The reinforcing member 21 may be formed of a rolled section which is originally T shaped and embodies, in addition to the attaching or head flange 29, the head flange and stern 3|. As clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawing the head fiange 29 is offset relative to the head flange 30 in order to permit the latter to lie in the plane of the panel so as to constitute an extensionl 2+ f if ing water or the like'before it is forced across the top of the door and into the car. To provide for drainage of the water so collected the ends 32 and 33 'of said trough are left open :whereby any such collected water will be disposed of outwardly of the door.V While this constructionV of the A trough to permit disposal of the water is pre.

front and rear door posts dening a door opening in a side of said car, said door posts projecting laterally outwardly beyond said car side, a sliding door for closing said door opening, a metallic member substantially equal in width to the width of said door secured to the upper margin of said door, said member embodying a trough disposed above the upper horizontal edge of said door and a depending ange secured to said door, said trough having at least one open end extending beyond said rear door post in laterally outwardly spaced relation to said post to maintain the integrity thereof, said trough being adapted to collect water and drain the same through the open end outwardly of said doorwhen the latter is in closed-v position, without necessitating coping of said post.
