This invention relates to mills for use in connection with sheet and tin plate rolling and. more particularly the invention is concerned with improvements in backing rolls therefor of the kind disclosed in my co-pending application, Ser. No.
582,208, filed December 21, 1931.
In the rolling of sheet metal the working rolls, i. .e., the rolls which provide the reducing pass, are deflected at their centers owing to the bending stresses set up during each reduction. As the magnitude of the reductions decreases, the magnitude of the deflections decreases correspondingly. The sheet or pack, therefore, approaches a flat or rectangular .form as its thickness is --reduced. Heretofore, it has been the practice to employ backing rolls in .connection with the working rolls, the former cooperating with the latter to maintain the deflection of the working rolls at a minimum in order to adhere as closely as possible to ideal rolling conditions.
It is essential to good rolling conditions that the sheet or pack fit the pass provided by the working rolls. My copending application, above referred to, covers a mill characterized by a work-' ing pass, which with respect to a particular screw adjustment, may be varied without the necessity Of replacing any of the parts of the mill. To this end the backing rolls are formed .to provide spaced zones for local contact with the working rolls and the pass provided by the latter is controlled by varying relatively the diameter of the backing rolls at said zones. Such variations may be effected by the use of suitable. heating and cooling equipment, the said equipment being adapted to cause the backing rolljto expand or contract at said zones to the extent which may be necessary toregulate the deflection of the working rolls. The heating and cooling equipment-may, for example, consist of a saddle'which 4 is arranged in contacting relation or in close proximity to each of the contact zones, the said saddle being maintained at the desired temperature by a suitable medium such as steam, hot water, oil, molten metal, et cetera.
45 The principal object of the present invention is to provide a backing roll of-the kind generally described in which those portions of the roll which provide the contact zones are-so formed that the resistance which the roll offers to expansion and 5 contraction at said zones is minimized, whereby to increase the sensitivity of the roll to the influence of the heating and cooling equipment.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

The backing roll is illustrated, by way of example, in connection with various types of twohigh mills. It is to be understood, however, that the advantages of the, invention may also be obtained by the use of the roll in connection with 15 the working rolls of various kinds of multi-pass mills.
The backing roll which is indicated generally at 5 is illustrated in Figure 1 in connection with a mill which includes upper and lower working 20 rolls 6 and 1 respectively, the said backing roll cooperating with the lower of the workingrolls. The various rolls are mounted in suitable housings 8, each of which is provided with a conventional adjusting screw 9 by which the magnitude 25 of the reductions is controlled. The backing roll, as illustrated, is formed or'provided with end collars It and an intermediate collar H, the latter preferably being of a suitably smaller diameter than the former. The collars provide zones 30 for localcontact with the lower working roll to limit the deflection of the latter during the reducing pass, the relative diameters of the col' lars determining the extent to which the lower roll is deflected, whereby the sheet or pack will be formed with a predeterminedcross-sectional convexity.
The pressure exercised by the backing roll upon the associated working roll, and hence the degree of deflection of the working roll, depends among other factors upon the relative diameters of the backing roll at the points" of contact with the working'roll, and this factor remains constant as the temperature remains constant. It will be understood that by relatively increasing or decreasing the diameter of the intermediate section of the backing roll, i. e. in the preferred construction the diameter of the intermediate collar whereby it will be of a diameter relatively greater or relatively'less than the diameters of the end' collars, the deflection of the working roll will be controlled with reference to the cross-section of the sheet or pack. The variations in the relative diameters of the collars will for most purposes be' of the order of a few thousandths, i. e. up to ten ortwelve'thousandths, of an inch and such or other variations as circumstances may require may,vtherefore, be readily obtained by the use of suitable heating and cooling equipment.

The combination with the working roll of a mill of the character described, of a backing roll which is formed with end and intermediate collars which are adapted to provide zones for local contact with the working roll, whereby by suitably heating and cooling the backing roll at said collars the diameter of the backing roll at said collar may be varied to control the deflection of the said working roll, said intermediate collar being divided by grooves into a plurality of complementary segments each of which provides an area for contact with the working roll, whereby to facilitate the control of the pass which is provided by the working rolls of the mill.

The combination with the working roll of a mill of the character described, of a backing roll which is formed with end and intermediate collars which are adapted to provide zones for local contact with the working roll, whereby by suitably heating and cooling the backing roll at said collars the diameter of the backing roll at said collars may be varied to control the deflection of the said working roll, said intermediate collar being grooved to provide a. plurality of complementary segments each of which is adapted to provide an area for contact with the working roll, whereby to facilitate the control of the pass which is provided by the working rolls of the mill.
8. An integral backing roll for limiting to a predetermined degree the deflection of a working roll of a sheet or pack rolling mill, said backing roll being grooved to divide its periphery into segments, whereby to increase the sensitivity of.
