Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,003, dated May 21, 1878 application filed September 22, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM E. CANED Y, of Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota, and EDWIN E. LEAGH, of Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fence-Posts; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed.

Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are representations, respectively, of a rear and front view of our improved fence-post. Fig. 3 is a side view thereof. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the same, and Figs. 5 and 6 are horizontal sectional views.
This invention has relation to improvements in fence-posts adapted to be driven into the ground, and formed of combined metal and wood.
The nature of the invention consists in combining, with a metallic fence-post, an upturned hook projecting 'from the side of the post, a spur extending from the same at the side of the hook, and preventing the wire supported by said hook from escaping therefrom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the body of our improved fence-post, having its lateral edges tapering upward, and provided with projecting flanges a, extending from the top of the body to a point somewhat below the upper edges. of the side flanges b of the drive-point B. These flanges a are connected just above one of the flanges b by a,
transverse ledge or stop, 0, that serves to support the lower edge of the wooden core or stifi'ener G. This latter extends from the ledge c to the upper end of the body A, and it fits snugly between the flanges a. The core former from getting out of the recess formed by the flanges a and the ledge 0. Should the body of the post through any accident become broken across at any point within the length of the said core, it will be supported by the latter, and its efficiency in great I measure preserved.

The lower ends of the flanges a terminate in a bevel, e, that materially facilitates the forcing of that portion thereof into the ground.

The space between the end of the hook and the post is sufliciently wide to permit the introduction of a wire in setting up the fence, and the said hooks are sufficiently strong to bear the weight of the said wires. The latter, being drawn taut, are" passed under a spur, t, at the side of the hooks, and are thus prevented from escaping therefrom. These spurs extend out from the post so as to overlap or nearly overlap the end of the hooks. They thereby close the interval between the end of the hook and the post, with the effect above described.
By loosening the wires in the act of taking down the fence, they may be disengaged from the spurs and drawn out of the hooks without difficulty.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a fence-post, of the hooks g for holding the fence-wires, and the projecting spurs 41, secured at one side of said hooks on a line below the upper end of the same, whereby the wires are confined, substantially as specified.
