My invention relates to a combined mouth and nose guard.
The object of my invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a guard of the class referred to for preventing dust or germs from entering the nostrils and mouth in ordinary respiration when it is desirable that the wearer be protected from breathing in impurities carried by the atmosphere.
A further object of my invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a mouth and nose guard providing, when worn, free breathing with respect to the nose by inhaling through the guard and exhaling in an upward direction to discharge at the upper side edge portions of the guard to prevent heating and irritation of the nose through breathing.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a combined mouth and nose guard which, when worn, will enable the wearer to breath through the mouth and nose, but is so formed whereby the breathing through the mouth will be entirely independent from the breathing through the nose.
My invention has for its further object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a combined mouth and nose guard which. is useful for housekeepers, janitors, surgeons, physicians, dentists, barbers and other persons to protect the wearer from breathing in impurities carried by the atmosphere as well as excluding the effects of foul breaths or germs.
A further object of my invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a combined mouth and nose guard which is useful for the application and retention of medicaments in the treatment of respiratory diseases.
A further object of my invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a combined month and nose guard capable of being saturated with any type of antiseptic or other solution that would overcome the effects of foul breath on the wearer.
Further objects of my invention are to provide,
in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a combined mouth and nose guard which is simple in its construction, strong, durable, compact, flexible, having a nose receiving pocket and a mouth abutting portion and with the pocket spaced from the said portion to form spaced parts for independent breathing through the mouth and nostrils, thoroughly eflicient in its use, readily installed and secured in juxtaposition with respect to the mouth and nose of the wearer and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists of such parts and such combination of parts as are hereinafter'more specifically described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an em- :5 bodiment of my invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

The guard includes a body part which may be 25 set up from one or more plies of any suitable fabric and is illustrated, by way of example, as consisting of a plurality of fabric plies. These plies may be of like or different material.
With reference to the drawing. The body part 30 of the guard is designated 1 and is common to the nose, cheeks, upper and lower lips, chin and. mouth of the wearer. The body part 1 includes an outwardly directed foldable and extendible nose receiving pocket 8 having a pair of upper 35 and a pair of lower walls, an upper lip abutting portion 9 extending downwardly from the lower walls of the mouth of pocket 8 inwardly adjacent the outer end of the latter, a mouth closing or abutting portion l0 merging at its upper end into the lower end of portion 9, a lower lip abutting portion ll merging at its upper end into the lower end of the mouth portion ID, a chin abutting portion |2 merging at its upper end in the portion H and a pair of check abutting portions l3, 14 which merge into the sides of the portions 9, H], H, and I2 and into the inner ends of the lower walls of pocket 8.
The body part 1, as illustrated, includes an inner, an outer and an intermediate ply of fabric indicated at l5, l6 and I! respectively. The plies l5, H5 are of any suitable fabric. The ply I1 is shown as consisting of the ordinary surgical gauze. Each ply will be of the same contour and before the plies are assembled together to form the body part 1, provided with the pocket 8 and portions 9, In, H, l2, l3, and M, the form of each ply will be similar to the blank 3 shown in Figure 5. The blank |8 consists of a lower, an intermediate and an upper portion I9, 20, and 2| respectively. The portion I9 is of segmental contour and merges at its top into the bottom of portion 28. The latter is substantially of rectangular contour and of materially less length and of greater width than-portion 19 whereby portion 20 will project beyond the sides of portion I 9. The bottom of portion 20 is provided with oppositely disposed curved edge parts 22 forming outward continuations of the edge of portion l9. The top of portion 20 merges into the bottom of portion 2|. The top of portion 26 is formed with a pair of oppositely disposed inwardly extending upwardly inclined edge parts- 23 which merge at their inner ends into the inner ends of the side edges 24 of the portion 2|. latter is substantially of rectangular contour and is-of greater length and of less'width than portion 28. The length of portion 2| is less than that of portion l9. The portion 2| is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed inclined top edge parts 25, 26 which extend at a downward inclination from the outer ends of the side edges 24 to the vertical median of the portion 2| at a point outwardly of but in proximity to'the longitudinal median of portion 2|, The edge parts 25, 26 merge into each'other at their inner ends. Theside edges 24 are oppositely disposed with respect to eachother and extend at an outward inclination from their inner to their outer ends.
The body part 1 also includes a flexible combined closure, coupling, reinforcing and retaining strip 21, a binder 28, a binder 29, and rows of stitching 36, 3|, 32,32, and 32 When the body part 1 is set up the edge parts 25, 26 are brought in juxtaspaced relation and coupled together by the row of stitching 36 whereby the portion 2|, in connection with a part of portion 20, will provide the outwardly directed nose pocket 8. The strip 21 is positioned upon the outer face of the body part 1, extends across the edge parts 25 26 and is anchored to the outer face of body part 1 by the stitching 3 The binder 28 overlaps'the edges 24 of portion 20 and the edge parts 23 of portion l9 and is secured to the plies and to the inner end of strip 21 by the stitching 3|. The binder 29 overlaps the curved edge parts 22 of portion 2| and the edge of portion l9 and is secured to the plies by the stitching 32.
The pocket8, provided by the portion 2| and a part of portion 2|], is tapered and gradually decreases in cross sectional area from its mouth to its outer end. The pocket is formed with a pair of oppositely disposed lower walls 33, 34 and a pair'of oppositely disposed upper walls 35, 36. The walls 33, 34 extend in opposite directions up- 1 wardly and at an outward inclination. The walls '35, 36 extend in opposite directions downwardly and at outward inclinations. The upper ends of walls 33, 34 merge into the lower ends of walls 35,36. The strip'21 is positioned on walls 35, 36 and extends from thefinner to the outer end of the pocket. The strip 21 not only reinforces the walls 35, 36 and conceals and couples the edge parts 25, 26, but also functions as a hinge for the walls 35, 36 and a stiffener for pocket 8.
' The guard includes a pair of oppositely disposed tie members 31 and an elastic adjustable attaching element 38. The latter is of straplike form and has its ends secured-to the sides The' the pocket in a direction upwards towards the face of the wearer to discharge at the side edges 24 of portion 2|. This arrangement prevents heating and irritation to the nose of the wearer when breathing.
The mouth closing or abutting portion l8 enables independent breathing with respect to the mouth and nose, as the said portion In is arranged inwardly of the outer end of the nose pocket 8 and spaced below and from said pocket. Breathing with respect to the nose is had at the outer portion of the walls 33, 34 which is at a point spaced outwardly from and above the mouth abutting portion I0. Breathing with respect to the mouth is had at the'portion I0 which is at a point removed from walls 33, 34.
With reference to Figure 6. This figure illustrates the guard folded when not desired for use.
What I claim is:
1. A combined mouth and nose guard formed of a flexible bodypart having upper lip, mouth, lower lip, chin and cheeks abutting portions and upper and lower outwardly directed portions forming a foldable and extendible nose pocket having it mouth at. its inner end, the said upper lip, mouth, lower lip and chin portions being inset throughout with respect to said pocket, said upper lip abutting portion merging at its upper end into the said lower outwardly directed portion inwardly adjacent to the outer end of the latter, means for detachably securing said body part upon the face of the wearer, the said outwardly directed upper portion being split, and
'a combined coupling and hinge means for and secured to and lengthwise said outwardly directed upper portion for securing the edges of the split in thejlatter together.
2. A combined mouth and nose guard formed of a flexible body part having upper lip, mouth, lower lip, chin and cheeks abutting portions and upper and lower outwardly directed portions forming a folclable and extendible nose pocket having its mouth at its inner end, the said upper lip, mouth, lower lip and chin portions being inset throughout with respect to said pocket, said upper lip abutting portion merging at its upper end into the said lower outwardly directed portion inwardly adjacent to the outer end of the latter, means for detachably securing said body part upon the face of the wearer, said outwardly directed upper and lower portions forming re-' spectively a pair of oppositely disposed downwardly extending and outwardly inclined upper walls for said pocket and a pair of oppositely disposed upwardly extending outwardly inclined lower walls for said pocket merging into said upper walls.
3. In a combined nose and mouth guard, a body part formed of a plurality of connected together fabric plies of like form, each ply consisting of a segmental lower portion, a substantially rectangular intermediate portion of materially less length of greater width than and extended from opposite sides of said lower portion and a substantially rectangular upper portion of greater length and of less width than and positioned inwardly with respect to the sides of said intermediate portion, said upper portion being formed with a pair of oppositely extending inwardly inclined top edge portions and a pair of oppositely disposed outwardly inclined side edges, and means for coupling said top edge portions in opposed relation.
4. In a combined nose and mouth guard, a body part formed of a plurality of connected together fabric plies of like form, each ply consisting of a segmental lower portion, a substantially rectangular intermediate portion of materially less length, of greater width than and extended from opposite sides of said lower portion and a substantially rectangular upper portion of greater length and of less width than and positioned inwardly with respect to the sides of said intermediate portion, said upper portion being formed with a pair of oppositely extending inwardly inclined top edge portions and a pair of oppositely disposed outwardly inclined side edges, and means anchored to said plies and positioned against the inner face of the upper portion of the innermost ply for coupling the top edge portions of the upper portions of said plies in opposed relation.
5. In a combined nose and mouth guard, a body part formed of a plurality of connected together fabric plies of like form, each ply consisting of a segmental lower portion, a substantially rectangular intermediate portion of materially less length, of greater width than and extended from opposite sides of said lower portion and a substantially rectangular upper portion of greater length and of less width than and positioned inwardly with respect to the sides of said intermediate portion, said upper portion being formed with a pair of oppositely extending inwardly inclined top edge portions and a pair of oppositely disposed outwardly inclined side edges, means for coupling said top edge portions in opposed relation, an adjustable strap anchored at its ends to the sides of said intermediate portions of said plies, and a pair of tie-strings anchored to the sides of the said lower portions of said plies.
6. In a combined nose and mouth guard, a body part formed of a plurality of connected together fabric plies of like form, each ply consisting of a segmental lower portion, a substantially rectangular intermediate portion of materially less length, of greater width than and extended from opposite sides of said lower portion and a substantially rectangular upper portion of greater length and of less width than and positioned inwardly with respect to the sides of said intermediate portion, said upper portion being formed with a pair of oppositely ext/ending inwardly inclined top edge portions and a pair of oppositely disposed outwardly inclined side edges, means anchored to said plies and positioned against the inner face of the upper portion of the innermost ply for coupling the top edge portions of the upper portions of said plies in opposed relation, an adjustable strap anchored at its ends to the sides of said intermediate portions of said plies, and a pair of tie-strings anchored to the sides of the said lower portions of said plies.
7. In a combined nose and mouth guard, a body section consisting of a ply of fabric formed of a segmental lower portion, a substantially rectangular intermediate portion of materially less length, of greater width than and extended from opposite sides of the inner end of said lower portion and a substantially rectangular upper portion of greater length and of less width than and merging at its inner end into said intermediate portion, said upper portion having its
