This invention relates generally to knives, and more specifically to pocket knives, the predominate object of the invention being to provide a pocket knife which is so constructed and arranged that the handle portion thereof is of substantially cylindrical shape.

Prior to this invention, pocket knives have been provided with handles which comprised separate sections of material which were secured at opposite sides of the knives. This structure resulted in the back portion of the knife structure being visible between the opposed sections of the handle portion of, the knife, which detracted from the appearance of the knife, and also it has been found that it is almost impossible to print advertising and other printed matter on the irregularly shaped, opposed handle sections of pocket knives as formerly constructed.

The pocket knife disclosed herein'is provided with a handle which is of substantially cylindrical shape, so that said handle completely encloses the sides and back portion of the blade-supporting portions of the knife structure. Because of this arrangement the appearance of the knife is enhanced, and also a regular, substantially cylindrical handle surface is provided which is capable of conveniently receiving printed matter thereon, soY that the knife may be decorated or employed as an advertising medium.

In the drawing, wherein is shown for the purpose of illustration, merely, one embodiment of the invention, A designates the improved pocket knife generally. The pocket knife comprises a handle portion H and what for convenience will be referred to as the blade-supporting portion, this latter portion being designated by the reference character K and comprising opposed side plates I, between which blades 2 are arranged, and a suitable spring 3 arranged and adapted to maintain the blades in positions toV which they have been adjusted. The blades 2 are each pivotally connected to the side plates l of the bladesupporting portion K by a hollow rivet 4, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4, these hollow rivets also serving to connect the side plates together so as to renderthe blade-supporting portion K a unitary structure. The spring 3 of the blade-supporting portion K is arranged in place in the usual manner.

The handle portion H of the pocket knife A comprises a cylindrical body 5 of suitable material which is provided with a narrow, longitudinally extended opening 6 of the approximate width of the blade-supporting portion K of the pocket knife. At its opposite ends the cylindrical body 5 of, the handle portion is provided with end portions l which are each solid except for an opening 8 of the approximate cross-sectional shape and dimensions of the blade-supporting portion K. The openings 8 of the end portions 1 are of substantially the same width as the longitudinally extended opening 6 of the tubular body 5 of the handle portion of the pocket knife and are alined therewith so that a continuous opening from end to end of the handle portion of the pocket knife is provided. The end portions 'l of the handle portion H and the tubular body 5 thereof are integrally formed or are suitably secured together to provide a unitary handle structure.

In producing the particular pocket knife illustrated in the drawing hereof, I construct the handle portion of pyralin or some other suitable material, and in assembling the blade-supporting portion K and the handle portion H, I extend pins 9 through the hollow rivets 4 of the bladesupporting portion K, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4. These pins are of slightly greater length than the hollow rivets, and if desired the pins 9 may be pivoted at their opposite ends as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. When the blade-supporting portion K is being introduced into the handle portion H, said handle portion is spread slightly at the longitudinally extended opening provided by the openings 6 and 8. The blade-supporting portion K is then inserted in the opening of the handle portion, whereupon the handle portion is compressed so as to force the extended end portions 9 of the pins 9 into the material of the handle portion, as shown in Fig. 4. Thus the blade-supporting portion K and the handle portion H of the pocket knife are securely fixed together to provide a unitary pocket knife structure without any fastening means being visible at the outer surface of the pocket knife. It is obvious, of course, that various apparatus may be employed for the purpose of spreading the of. the end members of the handle portion se that the knife may be attached to a chain or other connecting means.

As heretofore stated herein, the cylindrical shape of the handle portion of the improved pocket knife A provides a regularly curved surface Wlriich is capable of receiving advertising and other printed matter thereon. Thus the pocket knife may be decorated by printing design matter thereon, or the handle portion of the pocket knife may have advertising matter printed thereon whereby the improved pocket knife is constituted an excellent advertising medium.

While I have described this invention as being particularly adapted to pocket knives, it is to be understood that other devices which include foldable blades might be constructed in accordance therewith. For instance, instead of the blade of a device constructed in accordance With this invention being a cutting blade, it may be in the form of a fingernail file. Also other foldable blade elements might form parts of the improved structure Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim:

1. A pocket knife comprising a blade-supporting portion and a handle portion Within which said blade-supporting portion is arranged, elements associated with said blade-supporting portion and extended beyond the opposite side faces thereof, said handle portion completely enclosing the back and opposite side portions of the bladesupporting portion and being provided with a longitudinally extended opening at which an edge portion of the blade-supporting portion is exposed, said extended elernents associated with the blade-supporting portion being embedded in the material of said handle portion so as to iixedlyv connect the blade-supporting portion to the handle portion.

A pocket knife comprising a blade-supporting portion and a handle portion Within which said blade-supporting portion is arranged, elements associated with said blade-supporting portion and extended beyond the opposite side faces thereof, said handle portion comprising a cylindrical element and end members at opposite ends of said cylindrical element, said handle portion completely enclosing the back and opposite side portions of the blade-supporting portion and said cylindrical element and said end members of the handle portion being provided with alined, longitudinally extended openings at which an edge portion of the blade-supporting portion is exposed, said extended 'elements associated with the bladesupporting portion being embedded in the material of said end members so as to xedly connect the blade-supporting portion to the handle portion.

A pocket knife comprising a blade-supporting portion and a handle portion Within which said blade-supporting portion arranged, pins extended through said blade-supporting portion at opposite ends thereof and having end portions projected beyond the opposite side faces thereof, said handle portion comprising a cylindrical element and end members at opposite ends of said cylindrical element, said handle portion cornpletely enclosing the back and opposite side portions of the blade-supporting portion, and said cylindrical element and said end members of the handle portion being provided with alined, longitudinally extended openings at which an edge portion of the blade-supporting portion is exposed, the projected ends of said pins being embedded in the material of said end members so as to xedly connect the blade-supporting portion to the handle portion.

A pocket knife comprising a blade-supporting portion and a handle portion Within which said blade-supporting portion is arranged, said blade-supporting portion including side plate elements between which blades are arranged, and hollow rivets for pivotally attaching said blades to said side piate elements, pins extended through said hollow rivets and having end portions projecteol beyond the opposite side faces of the bladesupporting portion, said handle portion comprising a cylindrical element and end members at opposite ends of said cylindrical element, said handle portion completely enclosing the back and opposite side portions of the blade-supporting portion, and said cylindrical element and said end members of the handle portion being provided With valined, longitudinally extended openings at which an edge portion of said blade-supporting portion is exposed, the projected ends of said pins being embedded in the material of said end mem- SY'LVESER G.
