Description
' April 7, 1936.-
BUNG FOR CASKS Filed Dec. 3, 1954 HVVENT EARLU vm' 1 ATTORNEY C.WDALI 03Q512 I Patented Apr. 7, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The instant invention relates to improvements in bungs and has particular reference to improvements in bungs especially adapted to casks and the like for the purpose of admitting air to the cask or barrel while drawing any liquor from the said cask or barrel.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a bung for casks or barrels which embodies means for admitting air to the container to facilitate the drawing of liquid therefrom and also provides means for sealing the container after the liquid or liquor has been drawn therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bung for casks or barrels which includes in its construction valve means of simple yet positive character and that may be incorporated in any bung for such containers.
A still further object is to provide a bung of the character specified that embodies a tube having a valve adapted to positively seal the barrel or cask by means of a slight movement of a resilient sleeve fitting over the tube and slidable thereon to cover a port or vent formed in the tube.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent with reference to the subjoined specification and the accompanying one sheet of drawings in which:-
Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating my improved bung and showing the tube extending therefrom and embodying the sliding sleeve valve member; I
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same illustrating the bore, tube and sliding valve; and
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the improved bung.
It is the customary practice in drawing liquors from barrels or casks to perforate the barrel or bung with a nail to admit air to the container while drawing the liquor therefrom, however, this is a make-shift practice and often times the operator forgets to replace this nail or other object thus causing the air to enter the container and thereby spoiling the contents thereof.
It is, therefore, my object to provide a hung of this character that includes in its construction a simple and eflioient valve means that may be easily and quickly operated to seal and unseal the container for the purpose set forth. 5
Referring particularly to the drawing in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed and. especially to Figures 1 and 2 it will be observed that my improved bung embodies the usual tapered or conical bung 5 through which a bore 10 6 extends angularly and in which a counter bore 1 is provided for the admission of a copper tube 8 closed at its upper end 9 and having an air inlet port in formed therein.
The said port I0 is normally closed by means 15 of a flexible sleeve ll slidable on the tube and adapted to cover the port, but when it is desired to draw liquor from the container the sleeve is moved up or down on the tube thereby uncovering the port I0 and venting the container to atmos- 20 phere so that the contents thereof may be drawn.
The reason for the angularity of the port 6 is that a mallet on like object may be applied to the bung in driving the same home, or in other words, the port and the valve is placed to one side to pro- 25 vide a space on top of the bung for driving purposes.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States the following:-
1. A bung for barrels or casks embodying a 30 tapered plug having a bore and a counter bore extending angularly therethrough, a tube in said counter bore, a vent port in said tube, and a flexible sleeve slidable on said tube and normally sealing said vent port. 35
2. In a bung for barrels or casks, a tapered plug having a bore and a counter-bore extending therethrough at an angle, a tube inserted in said counter bore and having its outer end sealed, an air vent in said tube, and a flexible sleeve slid- 40 able on said tube and normally sealing said vent.
CARLO VIDALI.
