Description

G. M. L; MGMILLENA 'Seed-Dropper.
Patented Mayl 25. 1858.
ILPETERS. PHOTOMTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGYON. D C,
PATENT OFFICE.
G. M. L. MOMILLEN, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEEDING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 20,358, dated May 25, 1858.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, G. M. L. MCMILLEN, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Seed-Distributing Device for Seed- Planting Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot1 the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of' this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of a portion ot' my device, taken in the line mx, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the whole device, taken in the line y y, Fig. 8. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the same, taken in the line at" w', Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of a portion of the same, taken in the line z z, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detached plan or top- View ot' one of the slides.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in the employment or use of regulating-slides, a gage, and a shaker, arranged and operated as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the discharge of the seed may be regulated as desired and the device effectually prevented from being choked or clogged.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and constructv my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a rectangular box, in which a shaft, B, is placed transversely. On this shaft B a cam, C, is placed, said cam having its pe,- riphery formed of a series of alternate elevators, c, and depressions b, as shown clearlyin Fig. 1, and at each side of the cam there is a cylinder, D, said cylinders having their peripheries formed with ratchet-shaped projections c, and between the cam U and each cylinder D there is an annular projecting flange, E. (See more particularly Fig. 4.)
F is a curved rod, which may be described as forming rather more than one-half of an ellipse longitudinally. (See Fig. l.) This rod is attached to a bar, G, which has a short traversebar, H, attached to its upper surface. The rod F is itted over the cam G, and
the ends of the bar G rest upon a top or cover,
I, which is placed on the box A. The flanges E E project upward through a slot in the top or cover I, the bar G being between them. The cover C is provided with projecting plates or ledges d, between which the ends of the bar G work, said plates or ledges serving as guides.
J is a sliding plate, which is Vtted on the cover I, and slotted so that it may be adjusted on the cover without being interfered with by the ilauges E and projectionsc, and still allow an opening for the discharge of the seed, (see Fig. 6,) e representing the slot. At each side ofthe sliding plate J a lcdge,f, is formed, the upper surfaces of which are rounded, as shown clearly in Fig. 5.
K is a gage, which is formed of twoinclined plates, g g. This gage is provided at each side with a iange, h, and these flanges rest on the ledgesffof the sliding plate J. The gage may be formed of one piece, the parts or plates' g g forming a suitable angle with each other.
L is a frame, which is titted on the cover I. This frame has pendent ledges 'i t' attached to it, said ledges fitting in a recess in the upper surface of the gage K at its center, between the plates or parts g g, said ledges keeping the gage in proper position. (See Figs. Zand 5.)
M is a slide, which is itted in grooves in the frame L, said slide being slotted to allow the flanges E E to pass through.
The operation will be readily seen, and is as follows: As the shaft B rotates a reciprocating motion is given the bar G through the medium of the curved rod F and cam O, and the seed, which is placed in a hopper over said bar, is kept thoroughly agitated and prevented from clogging up the discharge-aperture e. The discharge of the seed is facilitated by the cylinders D, the ratchet projections c ot' which insure its passage through the opening or aperture e, and this aperture may be increased or diminished as may be desired, according to the required amount to be sown on a given space, by adjusting the slides or sliding parts JM, the adjustment of the plate J regulating the gage K-that is, tilting its inner end to a greater or less degree, and thereby expanding or contracting the oritce e,
v .Y /4' 2 20,358' l as desiredthe plate M regulating the orioperated by the curved rod F andcam C, the fice e at its opposite edge, as shown plainly in sliding plates J M, gage K, and cylinders D Fig. 2. D, the Whole being combined and arranged Having thus described my invention, what I to operate as and for the purpose set forth. claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters G. M. L. MGMILLEN. Pn tent, is- Vitnesses:
The employment 0r use of the shaker G, GEO. OWEN, vplaced between the rotating flanges E E, and L. HELBRIGLE.
