Description

UNITED STATES y PATENT OFFICE., t
W'ILLTAM D. JONES, OF HAGAMANS MILLS, NEV YGRK.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR SEPARATING THE COMBUSTIBLE FROM THE INCOMBUSTIBLE GASES OR i PRODUCTS OF COMBUSTION IN FURNACES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 20,351, dated May 25, 1858.
To @ZZ whom, t Tita/y concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DAVIDSON JONES, of l-Iagamans Mills, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Separating` the Combustible from the Incombustible Volatile Products or Gases of Combustion from a Furnace and Returning them to the Fire-Place to be Consumed as Fuel; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in whichn Figure l is a vertical central sect-ion ofthe apparatus. Fig. 2 is a partial vertical section in the planeI indicated by the line a; t in Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts of an apparatus `for separating to a certain extent the combustible from the incombustible gases of combustion in such form as to make the apparatus applicable to all steam-boilers or other furnaces or to stoves.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my inventioml will endeavor to proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is a box of square or other form, made of slIeet-iron or other material, having at its upper part an inlet-opening c to receive the products of combustion, and above this openin a horizontal perforated or reticulated diaph I-agm l),which divides it into an upper chamber B and a lower chamber C, the said diaphragm having an opening e near the center, from which a pipe f descends to near the bottom of the box A. The said pipe f hasno communication with the lower chamber C, but communicates with the inlet-opening c in one side of a fan-blower D in the lower part of the box A, the outlet from which blower leads through one side of the lower part of the box A, and is intended to have connected with it a pipe leading to the ashpit or under the grate of the furnace or fireplace. The blower D has an inlet-opening cl at the opposite side to c to receive atmospheric air from an open-bottomed box E to mix with the combustible gases which enter the said blower at c. On the opposite side of the pipe f to the blower D there is arranged within the box A another blower F, whose outlet is to lead to the chimney or in a convenient manner to the atmosphere, and Whose inlet g is covered by a box G, whose bottom communicates with the chamber C. The entrance n to the box E is fitted with a valve 7L, and that m to the box G with a valve t, and the pipef is fitted with a valve y'. The fans 7a 7n of the blower D and those Z Z of the blower` F are attached to the same shaft 1I.
The above-described apparatus is complete in itself and can be applied to any stove or furnace by connecting the inlet ct with the fire-box or with the direct or return flue thereof, connecting the outlet of the blower D with the ash-pit or chamber under the tire-- grate, which should be otherwise closed, and connecting the blower F with the chimney or providing a suitable means of escape therefrom.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The necessary connections being effected, iire having been made, and the blowers set in operation by giving rotary motion to the shaft H, the volatile or gaseous products of combustion entering at a fill the chamber C, in which a great portion of the incombustible products (principally carbonio acid) subside by reason of their greater specilic gravity, while the combustible products (carbonio oxide) rise through the diaphragm l), which breaks the current and acts in a measure as a separator, into the chamber B, from whence they are drawn down the pipe j by the blower D, and thereby carried to the tire with a sufficient quantity ot air, which is simultaneously drawn into the said blower through the box E to effect ignition and combustion, the incombustible products being at the same time drawn from the chamber C through the box G by the blower F and conveyed to the chimney or into the atmosphere. The operation is regulated by the valves ,j, and 7L, a greater opening being given to i if the combustion in the fire-box appears to be smothered by the admission of carbonio acid, or to j when there is, as after a fresh charge of fuel, an excess ot carbonio oxide, and the What I claim as my invention, aud desire opening of the valve h being regulated to to secure by Letters Patent, is-
