The invention relates to improvements in infants garments and particularly to knitted under garments for infants and children and an object of the invention is to provide a garment having reinforcing straps applied thereon in a manner so that they in no way interfere with the expansion of the garment and such that they will effectively support front, rear and side tabs towhich latter the customary diaper can be attached without discomfort to the infant.

A further object of the invention is to attach the tabs to the garment so that they will in no way interfere with the stretching of the garment and preferably to support the tabs from the straps aforesaid, this insuring of a strong and efiective fastening which will not readily pull away and which will avoid injury to the garment.

A further object is to provide a garment having the tabs on the inside and positioned so that they will not be uncomfortable to the child when the garment is worn and arranged so that they can be readily moved to a lower position to accommodate a growing child.

A further object is to provide the garment with an open front and which when closed will not gape and also to provide means whereby the front of the garment can be readily laced closed, such dispensing with buttons or other similar undesirable fastening.

With the above more important and other minor objects in view which will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a front view of the garment.

Fig. '7 is a perspective view of a strap which can be substituted for a tab.

Fig. 8 is a view showing a modified fastening of the tab.

In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

The garment I which I provide is of the well known knitted type as used for infants and children and the garment herein shown is made so that it can be opened from top to bottom at the front and has what might be termed a double breasted front so that there is no possibility of the garment gaping at: the front when it is being worn.v Here it will be observed that the left hand side of the garment at the front underlies and laps the right handv side of the garment at the" front and that I have attached to: the left hand front part of the garment a vertical knitted strip 2 which has the left hand edge sewn. at 3 to the body of the garment and the other free edge" reinforced by a vertical tape 4, there being suitably spaced lacing holes. 5 provided in the tape and the strip.

The right hand side of the garment. at the front is also supplied with a vertical reinforcing tape 6 supplied with lacing holes- 1 which pass also through the material of the garment and laces B-- are supplied for holding the garment closed at. the front, the laces being laced up through the holes 5 and l in any desired mannerand tied in a bow 8 at the top.

The edge of the. underlying portion of the garment at the front is also provided with a vertical reinforcing, tape 9- and tothis tape at theupper and lower ends, I sew tie straps I0 and these tiestraps are adapted to be passed through button holes I I formed inthe material ofv the garment and in reinforcing patches l2 sewn to the overlying front portion of the garment.

Further tie. straps l3 are sewn to-the. patches and. obviously, one can readily tie the straps ill to those l3 to form bows indicated. at. M and I5- and when this is done, the underlying portion of the garment is effectively tied at its upper and lower corners to the overlying front portion of the garment. By providing the laces andtie straps, I avoid the use. of fastenings. such as buttons, dome fasteners and so forth which. are apt to injure and scratch the child and which are undesirable for laundering purposes.

The neck of the garment is supplied with the usual running string it which can be tied at the front and which allows the neck of the garment to be drawn upto properly fit the neck of the child.

To the body of the garment, I sew shoulder straps I1 and I8, the strap H passing from the lower edge of the garment more or less centrally at the front and over the one shoulder and terminating at the lower edge of the garment centrally at the back and the strap l8 passing likewise from the lower edge of the garment centrally at the front over the other shoulder and terminating at the lower edge of the garment centrally at the back.

Further right and left front straps I9 and 20 are sewn to the body of the garment and have their upper ends attached to the foreparts of the straps I1 and I8 approximately at the breasts and their lower ends terminating centrally at the sides of the garment. Similarly, right and left rear straps 2| and 22 are sewn to the back of the garment and have their upper ends fastened to the straps I l and I8 approximately at the breasts and their rear ends terminating centrally at the sides of the garment as shown.

These straps are utilized to support cloth tabs 23 to which the well known diaper is fastened and it will be here observed that the tabs are located at the front, at the rear and at the sides of the garment and are herein shown as located at the inner side of the garment. I prefer the tabs to be connected to the last mentioned straps by

corner tapes

24 and 25 sewn to the upper edge of the tab and extending angularly from the upper corners thereof and having their extending ends stitched to such straps.

By observing particularly Figure 5, it will be seen that the tab is effectively attached to the straps and that the garment can readily stretch to accommodate a body of larger girth without being damaged as the tab is free to rise or fall being suspended by the

In Figure 8, I have shown the upper edge of the tab as extending between the straps and as sewn to the garment but I do not consider this type of fastening as desirable as that just described. In Figure 7, I have shown a strap 26 in the form of a loop with the ends of the loop fastened to the straps on the garment and this might be substituted for the tab shown in Figure 5.

These tabs are utilized for supporting the customary diaper and the diaper would be fastened by safety pins to the tabs but in this connection, I might mention that any means of fastening the diaper to the tabs might be employed and if desired, the tabs could be supplied with button holes, dome fasteners or other devices for diaper fastening purposes.

While I have shown the tabs on the inside of the garment, I wish to point out that they could be fastened on the outside of the garment if desired.

By attaching the tabs to the garment in the manner shown, it is a very easy matter to lower the tabs to accommodate a growing child as it is simply a matter of detaching the fastened ends of the

24 and 25 and then sewing them to the straps in a location farther down.

While I have described the garment herein as ,of an open front double breasted type, it will be readily seen that the straps I! and l8, l9 and 20, 2| and 22 could be applied on any type of garment and the tabs used in conjunction therewith without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

What I claim as my invention is:-

1. In an infants garment with an opening centrally down the front thereof and means for drawing together the edges of said opening, a reinforcing panel of substantial width extending behind said opening, said panel being attached to said garment at one side of said opening throughout a substantial portion of its length, means for attaching the opposing side of said panel beyond the opposing side of said opening, a reinforcing strap extending the length of said panel throughout the length of one side thereof transverse tapes sewn to said panel, right and left reinforcing straps sewn to the main portion of the garment and passing from a location centrally at the front of the lower edge of the garment, over the shoulders and terminating in a location centrally of the lower edge of the garment at the rear, right and left, angularly disposed, front and rear, reinforcing straps sewn to the body of the garment and to the former straps and having their lower ends terminating centrally at the sides of the garment and their upper ends terminating at a height approximating to the breast portions of the body of the garment, a tab free of the garment and attached to tapes sewn to said panel, rear and side tabs free of the garment and attached to said reinforcing straps on the body of the garment at a height from the lower edge thereof such that the whole area of said tabs will be above the lower edge of said garment.

2. In an infants garment, having a vertical opening provided in said garment and extending the length thereof, means for drawing together the edges of said opening, a reinforcing panel of substantial width extending behind said opening, said panel being attached to said garment at one side of said opening throughout a substantial portion of its length, means for attaching the opposite side of said panel at a point beyond the opposing side of said opening, a reinforcing strap extending the length of said panel throughout the length of one side thereof, right and left reinforcing straps sewn to the main portion of the garment and passing from a location centrally at the front of the lower edge of the garment, over the shoulders and terminating in a location centrally of the lower edge of the garment at the rear, right and left angularly disposed front and rear reinforcing straps sewn to the body of the garment and to the former straps, and having their lower ends terminating centrally at the sides of the garment and their upper ends terminating at a height approximating to the breast portions of the body of the garment, diaper attaching tape means attached to said panel and rear and side diaper attaching tape means attached to said reinforcing straps on the body of the garment.

3. The combination with an infant's body garment of lower garment supporting straps extending over each shoulder of said body garment and from thence converging downwardly at back and front of said body garment to points located at the central front and rear lower edge thereof, front and rear lower garment balancing straps upon the body garment united at their upper ends to said supporting straps and converging downwardly therefrom to points located at the central right and left lower edge of said body garment, said balancing straps being united at their ends to said supporting straps at the central points upon the front and rear of said body garment at points approximately breast height and tapes sewn to said straps co-acting with safety pins to secure said lower garment.
