Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
WILLIAM K. MORGAN, OF ALEXANDRIA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-DRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,484, dated May 7, 1878; application `filed September 12, 1877.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, WM. K. MORGAN, ofAleX- andria, in the county of Licking, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Driers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, and exact description thereof, reference being clear, had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a clothesraek, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention -appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is an end elevation of my clothesrack opened. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same closed, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of a part thereof.
The main frame of my improved clothesrack is composed of two separate and independent racks, each consisting of two upright end bars, A A, connected by a series of horizontal bars, B 1B, arranged alternately on the outside and inside of the end bars, as shown. These two racks are connected at the top, on each side, by means of plates a a., fastened to the upper ends of the end bars A A, and pivoted together at their inner ends.
The main rack or racks A B can thus easily be folded close together, as shown in Fig. 2, or be spread apart, as shown in Fig. 1. When thus spread apart the two racks are held rm by means'of a latch, C, at each end, said latch being pivoted to one rack, and closing down over a pin, b, on the other rack, there being two or more notches, y, in the latch to hold the racks at diiferent distances apart. When the two main racks are closed together the latch is turned up against a pin, c, and held by means of a small slide, d, dovetailed into the end bar A of the rack.
Each of the main racks A B is provided with a smaller rack, composed of two side pieces, D D, connected by horizontal bars D. This rack is pivoted, near the lower ends of the side pieces D,`to the inner sides of the end bars A of the main rack, and when turned outward it is held in place by means of a brace, G, pivoted to the outside of the bar D, and provided with a slot, passing over a pin or headed screw, i, on the inner side of the bar A. This brace G is pivoted in a recess or depression on the bar D, and another recess or depression is further made therein for the head of the pin or screw t', so that the smaller racks on each side can fold within the main rack. When the entire structure is folded it is held together by means of hooks m m, as shown. This device, as constructed, is useful, and can be used for drying and airing clothes, feather-beds, pillows, furs., and other articles, and can also be used for dryingfruit by laying boards or trays across the bars of the racks.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
`l. The combination of the rack A B, latch G, stop e, and dovetailed slide d, for the purposesherein set forth.
2. In combination with the main rack A B, the pivoted rack D D', folding within the former, the slotted pivoted brace G, and the pin c", substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of August, 1877.
WILLIAM K. MORGAN. [L S.]
