This invention relates to a combined gauge and presser foot for sole stitehers.
Objects of the invention are to provide a combined gauge and presser foot for use in machines 5 that operate to form stitches attaching shoe outsoles to shoes, especially in resoling shoes; to provide a gauge that will operate along the edge of the new sole that is being attached to the shoe instead of operating along the edge of the old shoe structure, as is now the case; and to provide means for seeming the gauge in different adjusted positions and thereby vary the distance from the edge of the sole at which the stitches will be formed when the machine is operated.
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made t-o the annexed drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a presser foot equipped with the present invention and operating to at- 20 tach a new sole to an old shoe.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the combined presser foot and gauge.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the c-ombined presser foot and gauge operating to attach a new sole to an old shoe, the shoe sole structure being shown in section.
Fig. 4 is an inner side elevation of the combined foot and gauge.
Fig. 5 is an outer side elevation.
'I'he combined presser foo-t and gauge includes a base portion I functioning as a presser foot to operate upon the under or exposed surface of a new sole 2 that is being attached to old shoe structure 3 in substitution for a sole that has be- 35 come worn and been removed. An arm 4 projects from integral connection with the base portion I for attachment to the operating bar 5 included in the sewing machine. The arm 4 is provided with holes through which the attach- 40 ing screws 6 extend to attach the presser foot to the operating bar 5.
A cutter l is secured to the presser foot by a clamp device 8 which is attached to the arm 4 by a removable and replaceable screw 9. This cutter 'I is supported in an inclined position so that the cutting edge l thereof is below the plane of the lower surface of the base portion I and will cut a channel or groove in the new sole 2 parallel with and spaced inwardly from the outer edge of said sole. This groove provides a space to receive the stitches II by which the new sole 2 is attached to the old shoe structure.
Machines now in use have gauges operating against the old shoe structure 3 instead of against the edge of the new sole 2. As a result, the channel or groove formed by the cutter I is not parallel with the edge of the new sole, but is formed at varying distances therefrom and, as a consequence, the stitches I I are formed at various distanoes from the edge of the new sole. This is objectionable.
My invention comprises a gauge attached to the base member I for operating against the edge of the new sole 2 to insure the formation of the groove and the stitches II parallel with the edge of the new sole and at a uniform distance therefrom. This gauge comprises a member I2 seated against the underside of the base member I and having one end connected with said base member I by a pivot I3 and the opposite end portion I4 provided with a threaded hole. A screw I is mounted in a hole in a flange I6 formed in connection with the base member I, and said screw is screwed through the threaded hole in the end portion I4 of the member I2. The inner edge of the member I2` is formed with a curved downwardly extended flange I'I which is designed and adapted to operate against the edge of the new sole 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. By rotating the screw I5, the gauge flange I1 may be moved toward or from the inner edge of the base member I and held in any adjustment in which it is placed. A spring I8 may be mounted on the screw I5 between the flange I6 and the end portion I 4 of the gauge member I2 in order to press the gauge member in a direction away from the flange I6.
It should now be apparent that this invention attains all of its intended objects and purposes efficiently and satisfactorily and dispenses with the necessity of a high degree of expertness on the part of the operator in order to attach the new sole to the old shoe structure in a proper manner. The construction and relationship of the parts may be varied within the scope of equivalent limits without departure from the nature and principle of the invention as dened by the appended claims.
I claim;-
1. A combined gauge and presser foot comprising a base portion adapted to seat upon the undersurface of the margin of a shoe sole, a pivot attached to said base portion, a gauge having one end supported by said pivot and said gauge including a curved portion projecting downwardly from said base portion to engage the edge of the shoe sole, and a screw supported by said base portion and engaging the opposite end of said gauge and being rotative to move said gauge about said pivot to different adjusted positions with respect to said base portion.
2. A combined gauge and presser foot comprising a base portion adapted to seat upon the undersurface of the margin of a shoe sole, a pivot supported by said base portion, a gauge having one end supported by said pivot and said gauge including a curved portion projecting downwardly from said base portion to engage the edge of the shoe sole, a screw supported by said base portion and engaging the opp-osite end of said gauge and being rotative to move said gauge about said pivot to different adjusted positions with respect to said base portion, and a spring mounted on said screw and cooperating with said base portion and said gauge to hold said screw from longitudinal movement with respect to said base portion.
