Description

March 17, 1936. H. BAYER COMPACT SUN REST Filed Sept. 10, 1934 INVENTOR fig r/y BaZer R N EY Patented Mar. 17, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a device that may readily be stretched on the sand, or the like, to keep the clothing or body clean,- and which may be folded in book form to resemble a book, so that it may readily be carried.
The invention is a device formed of two substantially fiat pieces of material hinged together and adapted to fold similar to a book, in which a brace is provided for limiting the outward movement of the members and also in which a sheet of material is provided in combination therewith, which may be stretched out to form a bed or seat.
Many types of folding chairs, seats, cots and beach mats have been provided and many are collapsible and may be folded, however, it has been found desirable to provide a device of this nature having a comparatively large sheet of material adapted to be placed upon the ground and having a casing in the form of a book which may be opened to form a head or back rest, and in which said piece of material may be folded.
The object of the invention is to provide a device in the form of a rest, in which means is provided for supporting the back or head in combination with a sheet of material of suificient size which permits a person to lie thereon, and in which said piece of material may be folded into the part forming the rest.
Another object is to provide a reclining mat having a head rest in which the mat is secured to the rest, thereby preventing the head rest moving away from the mat.
Another object is to provide a device in the form of a blanket or covering having means in combination therewith into which said device may be folded and which, when folded, will resemble a book.
A further object is to provide a sheet of material in combination with a book-like folder into which it may be folded, in which means is provided for holding the folder in the upright position.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a mat having head supporting means in combination therewith, and into which the mat may be folded, which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these ends in view the invention emlarge sheet of material attached thereto, and having a brace limiting the opening movement of said folder.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description,
bodies a book-like folder having a comparatively taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing the device as it would appear in use.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the device.
Figure 3 is a side elevation showing the device as it may be used for a seat.
Figure 4 is a side elevation showing the device partly open, and with the sheet of material supported by sticks, or the like, to provide a sun shade.
Figure 5 is a view showing the device partly closed.
Figure 6 is a detail showing the connection in the brace.
Figure 7 is a View showing the device in a fiat position as it may be used for a table, or the like.
In the drawing the device is shown as it may be made wherein numeral I indicates the sheet of material forming the mat, numeral 2 one of the sections forming the case, and numeral 3 the second section of the case.
The mat I is preferably made of a comparatively thin sheet of material, and it will be understood that any material may be used. This material may be a fabric, or a rubberized fabric, rubber, or any sheet material. In the design shown, this piece of material may be folded 1ongitudinally at the points indicated by the dotted lines 4 and 5, and transversely on the lines 6, and with the sides folded inward on the lines 4 and 5, and then with the entire device folded on the lines 6, it may be placed into the case as shown in Figures 3 and 5. At the end of the piece of material is a section I, which may be attached to the section 2 of the case, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and it will be noted that when the device is folded and placed into the case, it will extend around the end of the section 2 so that it may be folded on the inside, as shown in Figure 5. It will be understood, however, that this device may be folded into the case, or attached thereto, or provided in any manner. It may also be attached to the other side of the case, or to the case at any point.
The case is made by sections 2 and 3 hinged together at one edge by hinges 8, and the two sections are connected by a brace formed by bars 9 and I0, with one end of the bar 9 connected to the section 2 at the point I I, and the outer end of the bar I0 is connected to the section 3 at the point I2. These bars are pivotally connected by a pin I3, and the end of one bar is provided with a notch I4 that may snap over a pin I5 on the other bar in order to lock the two bars in the straight position with the two sections of the case partly open, as shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4. It will be understood, however, that a brace of any other type or design may be used, and this may be attached to the case at any other point or points. It will also be understood that this brace may be used on one side.only, or may also be used on both sides, as shown in Figure 2.
In the design shown in Figure 3, the case is shown partly open with the sections held by the brace and with the mat I folded upon one section forming a cushion for a seat. The device may, therefore, be readily opened and used as a seat, or used in any manner.
In the design shown in Figure 4, the device is used in an inverted position with the mat l extending upward, and it will be understood that this may be placed over the shoulder or may be supported by sticks or rods l6 and IT, or by any means.
It will be understood that other changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes may be in the use of a case of any other type or design, another may be in the use of other case, and it may be used by spreading the mat upon the ground with the case in an inverted position, as shown in Figure 1, so that the back or head may be placed against the case with the body upon the mat. It will be noted that while reclining in this position, the weight of the body will hold the mat and, as the rest is attached to the mat, it will be impossible for the rest to move away. The device may also be used in any position and it will be noted in Figure 4 that the mat may be folded above the device and the end may be placed around the shoulders, or Supported to form a sun rest in any manner. The device may, therefore, be used in various positions for a rest, bed, cot, or seat, and may also be used in the straight position, as shown in Figure 7, so that it may form a table top, or may be used as a table upon the ground.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A sun rest comprising two flat pieces of mate- 'rial hingedly connected with a collapsible brace adapted to hold said pieces of material substantially at right angles to each other and permitting said pieces of material to fold, one upon the other, to substantially a flat position forming together a case, and a relatively large piece of fabric with one end attached to one of said flat pieces of material, said fabric adapted to be folded between and enclosed within said flat pieces of material when closed, and. when open, said flat pieces of material are adapted to rest on the edges opposite the hinge to form a head rest while the fabric, outspread in front thereof forms a ground mat.
