1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in appliances for stropping safety razor blades, one of the objects being to provide a holder for a safety razor blade of either the single or double edged type, and' which when applied to a strop and moved to and fro thereon will cause the exposed edge of the razor blade to be stroked angularly upon the strop alternately in opposite directions and correspondingly upon the opposite faces of the blade.
Another object is to construct the holder s0. that the edge of the razor blade when stroked upon the strop in either direction will be sustained in an oblique position respecting the strop.
A further object is to provide in a stropping device a reversible holder for a double-edged razor blade and securing means therefor in selected positions so that either one or the other of the edges of the blade is applied to a complemental strop when the appliance is operated.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:-

The illustrative embodiment of the invention is comprised of a base I having a pair of spaced ears 2 extending outwardly from its back and in which for the is pivotally secured an operating handle 3. The
base has at each end a forwardly extending arm 4 and has curved edges 5 that are inclined forwardly and which extend substantially from one end of the base to the opposite end thereof.
Between the arms 4 is rotatably mounted a friction roller 6 having end trunnions 'I and 'I' that extend loosely through the arms 4, and the trunnion 1 has secured upon its end external of the adjacent arm 4 a spur-gear 8. Also, between the arms 4 is mounted a rock-frame 9 provided with trunnions Ill and It that extend looseiy through said arms, and the trunnion It has secured thereon a spur-gear I l that meshes with the aforesaid gear t so that upon turning movement of the friction roller E upon its axis in either direction corresponding opposite turning movement is thereby imparted to the rock-frame 9..
Upon. the ends of the rock-frame d are disposed corresponding radially disposed arms I2 and I2', the arm I2 being of greater length than the arm 10 I2', and between the arms for the rock-frame is mounted a razor blade holder i3 having at its ends trunnions I4 that extend loosely through the corresponding arms of the frame adjacent the outer ends thereof. Thus, the blade holder is dis- 15 posed to turn with respect to the frame upon an axis that is oblique to the axis of the trunnions I@ upon which the frarne has turning movement.
The holder consists of a plate I5 having an elongated depression it made therein for the reception of a bolster Il that is held in operating position by its downturned ends E8 that project through openings I9 made in the plate I5 respectively at the ends of the depression and bear snugly against adjacent faces of said plate in said openings. Preferably, the bolster is sprung into operating position in the plate, a portion of which becomes clamped between the ends I8 upon insertion of the bolster in the holder. The plate I5 has hinged thereon adjacent one of its ends a clasp 20 consisting of another plate substantially of the same width as the aforesaid plate I5, and which has made therein a depression 2l,
which when the bolster is in place and the clasp is closed receives the centering lugs` 22 that project from the bolster. The outer end of the clasp has a spring tongue 2t that when the clasp is closed projects through an opening 24 made in the plate I5 and snaps into holding connection therewith. The extreme outer end 23' of the l0 tongue 23 is outwardly turned so as to be engaged by a sliding fastener 25 mounted on the arm I2 that is provided with opposed lips 26 between which the corresponding end of the holder plate I5 is secured when the fastener is in locking po- 45 sition. In this manner the holder is secured from turning with respect to the rock-frame and incidentally the clasp is secured in closed position on the holder by said fastener.
In operation, an ordinary razor strop 2l is inr serted in the appliance so as to extend in front of the ledges 5 and back of the friction roller 6. When the strop is drawn taut it is slightly exed and bears with more or less force against the ledges and the roller so that when reciprocating movement is applied to the base on the strop by manipulating the handle 3 the roller is oscillated upon its axis because of its frictional contact with the strop and consequently the rockframe is correspondingly oscillated upon its axis through the medium of the spur-gears 8 and Il.
A razor blade 28 is inserted in the holder upon the bolster so that the centering lugs 22 project through the openings 29 and is held in place between the plate l5 and the clasp 20 When the clasp is snapped into closed position. The fastener 25 is then slid into engaging position so that the clasp is locked and the holder prevented from relative turning movement in the rock-frame. Thus, one of the edges ci the razor blade is sustained in outermost position and is brought into contact with the strop alternately in opposite oblique trailing positions respecting the Vstrop as the appliance is moved to and fro thereon.
The holder may be reversed in its position with respect to the rock-frame so that its other edge will then be foremost so as to loey applied to the applicable to a strop, a base including a handle therefor, provided with inclined ledges oppositely disposed and an extending arm at each end thereof, a rotatable friction roller disposed between said arms adjacent said ledges, a rock-frame pivotally disposed between said arms geared to said friction roller, and provided with parallel arm members of unequal lengths, a razor blade holder disposed pivotally between said members upon an axis oblique to that of said rockframe, and a fastener adjustably movable on one of said members for securing said holder selectively in relative reverse positions.
