Description
]l@, H936. E W MEARS 219335441 CONTAINER Filed Dec. 25, 1953 1 N VEN TOR.
Patented Mar. 10, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE 4 Claims.
The invention relates to a container for textile yarns. For knitting sweaters, dresses, etc., yarn is reeled from hanks into balls. It is difficult to handle these hanks or skeins and wind the same by hand. Therefore, the container,
in which the hank is stored and protected, is designed as a reeling or rotating device to facilitate the unraveling of the hanks.
A further object of the invention is to provide the reeling device with adjustable spacing members in order to place the hank around the members under proper tension.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the container with a fulcrum.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the removable cover of the container.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of the pivot.
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the container embodying the principles of the invention, and
Figure 5 is a sectional view of Figure 4 along the line 5, 5.
Referring to Figure 1 a container in accordance with this invention includes a bottom wall I and side walls 2, preferably formed from a fiat sheet of cutout material. A hollow portion 3 provided as fulcrum or as a seat for pivot 1, 8 is fastened to the side wall 2 or the bottom wall I or to both. In Figure 2 is shown a removable cover. It consists of a top portion 5 and side portions 6 adapted to cover the container. The cover is provided with an opening 4 preferably placed in the middle of the top portion 5.
In Figure 3 is shown a round pivot with an upper stem 8 and a lower stem 1, both of different diameter. The lower part I of the pivot is adapted to be inserted in the hollow portion 3, and the upper part 8 of the pivot is placed in hole 4 of the cover. The walls of the container and the cover can be designed either of rectangular proportions as shown in Figure 1 or of round shape. The cover is provided with a plurality of holes or slots 9. In these openings removable pins l0 can be inserted in an upright position. They can be spaced in such a way that a hank of yarn will be placed around the interchangeable pins ID in such a position and under such a tension in order to facilitate the unraveling of the yarn l3. Instead of tensioning pins I0, various spacing members of suitable design can be employed. These members either will be fastened to the cover or can be partly cut out of the cover and bent rectangular to the latter in the desired shape.
A separate frame or plate can be used as a support of the tensioning members. To secure the pins H] in an upright position, reenforcements are fastened under the support. These reenforcements are preferably made of cutout material and bent in any desirable shape to keep the support or the cover in rigid condition.
This container permits of the shipping and storing of skeins, hanks or similar articles made of any suitable material, while at the same time providing a device for easily unraveling the hanks.
It is used as follows: The container holding the hank, is opened by removing the cover. The pivot 1, 8 is placed in the fulcrum 3 and the cover or the support is inserted in the pivot by means of hole 4. The tensioning members H], which preferably are kept with the pivot and the hank in the container before use, are placed in holes 9 inserted in the cover. The hank is put around the pins II]. If tensioning members rigidly fastened to the cover are used, the hank can be placed around the members before the container is closed for shipment or sale. For unraveling the hank, one end of the same is seized and wound up into a ball l2 either by hand or mechanical means. This will cause the rotating of the cover or the support over the container and facilitate the unraveling of the yarn.
Although I have shown the container for use in connection with an unraveling device, I do not desire to be limited to the specification embodiments shown and described except as limited thereto by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A container comprising a casing having bottom and side portions formed from a fiat sheet of cutout material, a removable cover, a pivot, an upright hollow portion fastened to said casing to receive said pivot, an opening in said cover for said pivot, interchangeable pins, a plurality of slots in said cover provided as seats for said pins and reenforcements under said slots to secure said pins in an upright position.
2. A container comprising a casing and a removable cover both of rectangular shape, an upright hollow portion fastened to said casing and placed in one of its corners, a pivot and interchangeable spacing pins adapted to be inserted in said removable cover, said cover to be rotated over said corner of said casing.
3. A container comprising a casing and a removable cover, said casing and cover formed from a flat sheet of cutout material, pivotal means connected with said cover and said casing in such a way to facilitate the rotating of the one over the other, a support arranged in an upright position and being partly cut out of said flat sheet of material.
4. A container comprising a casing and a removable cover, said casing and said cover formed from a flat sheet of cutout material, a pivot and a fulcrum connected with said cover and said casing to facilitate the rotating of the one over the other, a plurality of spacing members connected with said container, said members being partly cut out of the material the container is formed from, said members being bent in such a position to permit the placing of hank around said members under a suitable tension.
