Description
Nov. 22, 1932. o. w. WALLER TIE HOLDER Filed July 6, "1931 ATTORNEYS.
I NV EN TOR Owl/v00 111M411 5Q Patented Nov. 22 1932 UNITED STATES OVANDO W. WALLER, F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA TIE HOLDER Application filed July 6, 1931. Serial No.'549,068.
My invention relates to and has for its purpose the provision of a device structurally characterized by the provision of means enabling neckties of the fo-ur-in-hand or how type, to be readily folded and maintained in such folded condition as will prevent wrinkling of the ties and will tend to remove any existing wrinkles, all in such manner that the neckties will be compactly stored 19 and attractively displayed for selection, while rendering the neckties conveniently accessible individually for inspection or removal without disturbing the folded condition of the ties.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein set forth around which the tie may be smoothly and firmly wound without the necessity of placing the same under tension, and which will eflectively function to hold the tie against casual unwinding when once applied as intended.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a tie holder in the form of a thin, flat,
rectangular plate which is so slotted as to receive the bight of a tie preparatory to winding, a particular feature being the rigidity of the arms (resulting from the formation of the slot) against flexing in a direction to close the slot.
I will describe only one form of holder and display device for neckwear embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features thereof in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in plan showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is avertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of a necktie holding form or core embodied in the device.
F igure at is a perspective View of the form with a necktie applied thereto preparatory to wrapping the tie upon the form, and
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the form with a necktie completely wrapped thereon.
Referring specifically to the drawing in which similar reference'characters designate similar parts in each of the several views, I provide several forms or cores F, one for each necktie and constructed of wood or other suitable material. The forms are all of identical construction and each is in the shape of a generally rectangular and substantially flat body or plate 11 of a length at least equal to the greatest width of a necktie to be applied thereto. The plate is provided with a slot 12 opening to one end of the plate and extending longitudinally thereof intermediate the side edges of the plate to a point adjacent to the opposite end or edge, said side edges being recessed as indicated at 13 and 14, respectively. The thickness of the plate is reduced intermediate its ends for co-action with the recessed side edges of the plate enabling a necktie of either the four-inhand or how type to be compactly and uniformly wrapped or wound on the plate in a manner to prevent wrinkling of the material.
Summarizingthe outstanding characteristics of the tie holder, the latter comprises a thin, flat, rectangular plate in which the slot is so located as to produce a pair of arms on which the tie is wound after the bight of the folded tie is inserted in the slot. It is important to observe that these arms are rigid against flexing in a direction to close the slot, thereby maintaining a perfectly stablecondition and avoiding, any possibility of breakage as would be the case if the use of the holder were predi- 8a cated on a flexing of one of the arms.
A necktie is applied to the form F by firs inserting the necktie intermediate its ends, into the slot 12, after which one stretch 15 of the necktie is folded over the form and then upon the other stretch 16 so that both stretches extend from the bight 17 connecting the stretches, on one and the same side of the form, all as clearly shown in Figure 4. lVith the tie suspended from the form in this manner, the two stretches of the tie are now wound or wrapped tightly as a unit about the form so that the material of the tie is stretched slightly and the inner convolutions of the two stretches placed under pressure.
As the wrapping operation proceeds, the recessed side edges of the form enable the successive convolutions to be compactly and uniforml built up upon the plate and to be pressed atly one against another, thus preventing the formation of wrinkles in the tie as well as tending to remove any wrinkles existing in the material, to the end that the tie will be held in a neatly pressed state for use.
In carrying the invention into practice, I preferably make use of a receptacle or rack R, in which the forms with the neckties applied thereto as above described are capable of being stored and displayed for selection and removal individually as desired. This receptacle comprises a rectangular box 18 of suitable rigid material having an open front and divided transversely by partitions 19 into compartments 20. The compartments are inclined as illustrated in Figure 2 and are of such width as to freely receive and support the neckties on the respective forms against displacement in both horizontal and vertical positions of the box.
With the neckties stored in the box as shown in Figures 1 and 2, a portion of each tie will be exposed from the respective compartment so that the pattern of the material will be clearly displayed, thus enabling any tie desired, to be selected and the ties removed individually from the box Without disturbing the wrapped condition of the ties upon the respective forms.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of holder for neckwear embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A tie holder comprising a thin, flat, rectangular plate provided with a slot extending from one edge of the plate coaxially with the longitudinal axis of the plate and terminating at a point adjacent to the opposite edge of the plate, said slot producing a pair of arms, said arms being rigid against flexing in a direction to close the slot, the remaining side edges of the plate being recessed.
OVANDO lV. lVALLER.
