10 Claims.
'I'his invention relates to car trucks.
It is the general object of the invention to provide novel and improved means of simple and eiicient construction for breaking up or minimizing spring harmonics in car trucks.
To this end, the invention consists in the novel parts and novel combinations of parts hereinafter defined in the claims and described in the following specification, made in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to the same or similar parts throughout the various views, and, in which,
Fig. 1 is a View in side elevation illustrating portions of a car truck embodying the present invention, certain of the parts being broken away and shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line .3 3 of Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrows; and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. l, as indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, there are illustrated portions of a side frame of a freight car truck including compression member 5, tension member 6 and bolster columns 1 extending between the compression and tension members and defining the sides of a lateral bolster opening 8 within which one end of a bolster 9 works. The tension member 6 below the opening 8 is provided with a widened spring plank seat I which projects both inwardly and outwardly beyond other portions of the side frame. A spring plank I I rests at its end in usual fashion on the spring plank seat I0. A spring plate I2 rests on the end of the spring plank II and supported on this plate are a number of inner and outer coiled springs I3, the inner springs being transversely spaced from the outer springs. These coiled springs bear at their upper ends against a plate I4 located below the bolster 9.
The bolster columns 1 below the portions against which the bolster works are forked to provide passages I5 through which a leaf spring I6 extends. This leaf spring extends longitudinally of the side frame midway between the inner and outer coiled springs I3 below the bolster 9. The various leaves of the spring are held in assembled relation by means of a central clip I8 which encircles the leaves and bears against the plate I4, the clip being restrained from movement longitudinally of the side frame by a pair of spaced downwardly projecting lugs I9 carried by the plate I4.
The compression member of the side frame for- 1934, Serial No. 733,746
(Cl. 10S-206) wardly and rearwardly of the columns 1 is equipped with downwardly projecting, apertured, spaced, ears 29 within which heavy transversely extending pivot studs 2l are mounted. Hangers 22 depend from these pivot studs and each of these hangers is preferably provided at its upper end with a transverse hub 22a encircling a pivot stud 2l between the ears 29 through which the stud runs and each hanger has a-lower rectangular portion 22o, the bottom of which forms a support for one end of the leaf spring I5. The bottoms of the rectangular portions 22h of the hanger are provided with transverse slots 22e within which downturned ends IEa of the lowermost leaf of the leaf spring I6 are received.
It will be seen that the bolster 9 is supported partially by the coiled springs I3 which are in' turn supported from the tension member 6 of the side frame and that the bolster 9 is also supported partially by the leaf spring I6 which is in turn supported by the hangers 22 depending from the compression member 5 of the side frame. The stresses and strains imposed on the side frame through its support of the bolster are more evenly distributed than is the case where coiled and leaf springs are supported entirely from the tension member alone. As the hangers 22 are free to swing, the leaf spring' I6 will be flexibly supported at its ends. The coiled and leaf springs mutually cooperate to sustain the truck bolster and its load and the coiled springs dampen the natural harmonic action of the leaf spring and the leaf spring dampens the natural harmonic action of the coiled springs. This eliminates or materially reduces vibrations in the truck.
It will be understood that trucks embodying the present invention may be equipped with lateral motion devices permitting lateral motion of the bolster, if so desired. These lateral motion devices may be interposed in the usual manner between the lower side of the bolster and the various springs I3 and I6.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the various parts without departing from the scope of the present invention.
