Description

Patented F eb. 25, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ANDIRON of Michigan Application December 10, 1934, Serial No. 756,789
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to andirons and more in particular to a novel construction thereof provided with means for positively retaining a fire screen or other protective device.
Among the objects of the present invention is the provision of a novel andiron construction for fireplaces and the like.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an andiron construction provided with l novel means of retaining a fireplace screen or guard in position. By reason of the present construction, complete protection is alforded since it eliminates all danger of collapse or tipping over of the screen as so frequently happens with l the present forms of screens which are generally made of folded sections or a single screen and are unstable and easily tipped over.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of an andiron construction in which the logs may be more easily handled and completely consumed.
Further objects are to provide a construction of maximum simplicity, eiciency, economy and ease of assembly and operation, and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and are inherently possessed thereby.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a View in perspective of a replace with the novel andirons in position.
Fig. 2 is a View in vertical cross section taken in a plane represented by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of an alternate construction.
Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of another form in which the andirons are made separate.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the novel andiron construction I D is shown in position in a fireplace A. The construction comprises inclined side members 2 for receiving logs or the like B. These side members 2 seat at their rear end upon the base or floor of the fireplace and are each provided at 45 their front end with a reverse bend forming a substantially U-shaped portion or leg 3 connected by means of a cross bar 4. These U-shaped p0rtions provide a recess or depression 5 in which the lower end of a screen or other protecting de- 50 vice 6 is adapted to be seated and retained against accidental displacement. This feature is of extreme importance as a safety measure, both in protecting the room against burning embers, and also in preventing a child or adult from acciden- 55 tally knocking over the screen. Also this screen may cover the entire opening of the replace and thereby afford a complete protection.
By reason of the inclination of the side members, the logs or the like B always move toward the rear of the fireplace and due to their position 5 on an inclined surface, are always assured of suicient draft for proper combustion.
Fig. 3 discloses an alternate form of andiron construction Ia' in which the side members l, although inclined toward the rear, are also conl0 veX. The forward end of each side member is provided with a U-shaped sustaining portion or leg 8 providing a recess or depression 9 for a screen or other protective device, and an eX- tension IU providing an additional leg for adding l5 stability to the structure. The inner or rear ends of the side members 'I are connected by a cross bar II.
A further alternate. construction is shown in Fig.
l in which the side members I2 form separate 20 andirons. These members or andirons are like- Wise inclined rearwardly but are also concave. Each member is provided at its forward end with a downwardly extending part I3 providing a base i4 and an outwardly and laterally extending leg 25 or face piece I5. Between the part I3 and the laterally extending leg I5 is formed a recess or groove l5 for the reception and retention of a screen or other protection for a replace.
From the above description and the disclosure in the drawing, it will be readily apparent that the invention comprehends a novel construction of andirons having inclined sides, which at their forward ends are provided with a recess or groove for receiving and retaining a screen or like con- 35 struction in xed position without danger of accidental displacement and affording complete protection.
The andirons may be shaped in various forms and provided with numerous designs or orna- 0 mentation, as desired. Also they may be made separate or with a connecting bar, and also may be concave or convex, in addition to their inclination.
Having thus disclosed the invention,
I claim:
1. An andiron comprising a continuous bar having a downwardly and rearwardly sloping fuel supporting portion and a forward leg portion formed with a reverse bend providing an elongated upwardly opening recess for reception and retention of a protecting screen.
2. In an andiron construction, a pair of andirons each comprising a continuous bar having a downwardly and rearwardly sloping fuel supporting portion and a forward Ieg portion formed with a reverse bend providing an upwardly opening recess for reception and retention of a protecting screen, and a cross member connecting said andirons.
3. An andiron construction for receiving logs and the like in a fireplace in combination with a protecting screen therefor, said construction comprising a pair of andirons each consisting of a continuous bar having a downwardly and rearwardly sloping fuel supporting portion and a forward leg portion formed with a reverse bend reception and retention o-f the protecting screen.
