(01. 30-6 5) This invention relates to a safety razor,'and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a razor of such class having its blade so formed with respect to the other elements of the razor to permit of the removal of the blade without completely disassembling the razor.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a safety razor with a reversible bifurcated blade capable of being removed from between the holder and guard elements of the razor without the necessity of completely disassembling the razor structure; with the holder element, guard element and blade having coacting parts for anchoring the blade at points adjacent the transverse medians of said elements to prevent a portion or portions of the blade shifting or the bodily shifting of the blade as an entirety relative to said elements when the razor is used, as well asfor said coacting parts functioning to reinforce the blade during shaving; and with the said coacting parts on said elements not interfering with the blade during the removal of the latter.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a safety razor blade of a form capable of being used in connection with holder and guard elements of razor structures different from that as'shown.
To the above ends essentially and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of such parts and such combination of parts,
which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Referring to Figures 1 to 7 of the drawings, the razor structure includes a handle element I, a guard element 2, a blade 3 and a holder element 4.
The element I preferably will be of circular cross section, but it may be of any cross sectional contour desired. The outer end portion of element I is formed with a circular socket 5 of suitable depth. Socket 5 is disposed axially of element I and opens at the outer end edge of the latter. The wall of socket 5 is upon two diame- .ters, the smaller indicated at 6 and the larger at I. The junction of the two diameters of the wall provides a shoulder 8. The portion 6 of the wall of the socket 5 is threaded. The outer end of the portion 1 of the wall of the socket 5 is flared. The shoulder 8 provides a stop for a purpose to be referred to.
The guard element 2 is substantially rectangular in plan and substantially of convex curvature in cross section. The element 2 at each lengthwise edge is toothed, as at 9. Each side of element 2 is ofiset, as at I0 and such offset partsare depressed to form grooves II. The grooves II are concave, coextensive with the length of the element 2 and arranged at the base of the rows of teeth 9 at the sides of element 2. The latter is formed at its center with a square opening I2.
The longitudinal and transverse medians of 'element 2 intersect the opening I2. Between the latter and each end of element 2 is a pair of sockets. The sockets of each pair are designated I3, are arranged in spaced relation and oppose each other. The sockets I3 are positioned inwardly with respect to the grooves I I.
The blade 3 consists of a substantially rectangular body of greater length and of less width than guard element 2, and when positioned on the latter extends from each end thereof. The blade is formed with a slot l 4 of a length slightly greater than half the length of the blade and is disposed centrally of the latter. The base of the slot is positioned between the transverse median and one end and extends to and opens at the other end of the blade. The width of the furcation corresponds to the width of opening I2 in element 2. The furcation I4 forms blade 3 into What may be termed a head part I6 and a pair of than that of the part 29.

Each corner of the blade 3 is cut out to provide the said side parts of reduced length and the said central part of greater length than said side parts, and also to form clearances for any enlargements which may be at the corners of the inner face of a guard or holder element. .The clearances at one end of'the blade are designated and those at the other end at 2|. The clearances 2| are of a different shape than the clearances 20 due to the.
fact that the ends of the blade are of a different form as shown. The arms l1, l8 in proximity to their-inner edges are formed with aligning openings 22, 23
respectively. The openings are positioned approximately centrally with respect to the arms. The head part I6 is formed with a pair of spaced aligning openings 24, approximately centrally thereof. The openings 24, 25 align with the openings 22, 23 respectively. The openings 22, -24 are arranged'adjacent one side and the openings 23, 25 adjacent the other side of the longitudinal median of the blade. The head part l6 outwardly with respect to the openings 24, 25 is formed with a keyhole-shaped opening 25 for the reception of an enlargement which may be positioned on the inner face of a holder or guard element. The opening 26 is intersected centrally by the longitudinal median of the blade. The

One lug of each ,pair is arranged adjacent one side and the other lug of each pair adjacent the other side of the longitudinal median of element 4. The lugs 3| and 32 are spaced from the stem 28. The element 4 is of less width than the blade 3.
'When the razor structure is set up, the blade 3 is positioned upon guard element 2 in a manner whereby the base l5 of furcation will register with a side edge of opening l2 that is disposed transversely of the guard 2 and which will provide for the openings 22, 23, 24 and 25 to register with the sockets l3. The holder member 4 is then arranged in a manner whereby the stem 28 will extend through furcation I4 and opening '|2, the lugs 3| passed through openings 24, 25
to seat in a pair of sockets l3 and the lugs 32 passed through openings 22, 23 to seat in the other pair of sockets l3. When the stem 28 is in the position referred to the part 29 thereof vrill be arranged at the inner end of the furcation l4 and extended through and beyond the opening l2. The element is then screwed upon part 30 of stem 28 until part 29 of the latter abuts shoulder 8 whereby the elements of the 3, it can be accomplished without completely dis- 7 assembling the structure, and in this connection the element is partly screwed off the stem 28 to an extent to permit of removing the lugs 3|, 32 clear of the blade 3. The portion 21 of the blade is then gripped and pulled laterally from between the holder and guard elements, as the furcation M will provide for so doing.
When the razor structure is assembled and -used, the grooves I I act as receivers for the hair and lather to prevent packing of the same under the blade.
The difference between the modified form shown in Figures 8 to 11 and that shown by Figures 1 to 7, resides solely in a different construction of guard element and blade. In the modified form'referred to the handle element,
guard element, blade and holder element are designated 33, 34, 35 'and' 36 respectively. The elements 33 and 36 are constructed in the same manner as the elements and 4 respectively.
The element 34 is substantially rectangular and in cross section is of arcuate contour. The outer face of element 34 is not provided with the grooves II at the base of the teeth 31 arranged at its sides. The lower faceof element 34 has spaced parallel lengthwise extending shoulders 38, 39 merging at their tops into the inner face of the bases of the teeth 31.. Otherwise than that as stated,'the construction of element 34 will be the same as 2, that is to say element 34 is formed with an opening 40 and sockets 4| corresponding in form, purpose and arrangement to opening l2 and sockets |3 respectively of element 2.' J l The form of blade 35 is substantially similar to that of blade 3 with this'exception that the clearances 4 at the corners of blade 35 are of a different contour than tho'se of the blade 3,
and that blade 351s not provided with an ope'nin'g similar to opening 26 in bladef3. Blade 35 is formed with a furcation 42 and openings 43, 44, 45 and 43 corresponding in form, purpose and arrangement to that of the furcation' |4 and 7 openings 22, 23, 24 and 25'respectivel'y of blade 3. The furcation 42 permits of the removal of blade 35 in the same manner as blade 3 without completely disassembling razor structure. The gripping part of blade 35 is designated 41.
The lugs on element 35 which extend through the blade 35 and engage in sockets" 48 are indicated at 48. :Th'efstern :of 'element 36 is designated 49. V g h g The modified form of blade, holder element and guard element shown in Figures 12, Band :14 are designated5ll, 5| and 52 respectively.
The blade is of the same form as blade 3 with a pair of spaced parallel elongated oval :shaped slots 53, 54 disposed lengthwise thereof and extending from a point substantially at the transverse median of head part 55 to a point substantially at the transverse median of the keyhole-shaped opening clearances, furcation 59, BI] and 6| respectively. The holder element 5| is constructed in the same manner as the element 4 with this exception that it is not provided with the lugs 3|, 32, but in lieu thereof it is formed on its inner face with a pair of spaced parallel elongated oval-shaped ribs 62, 63 between the longitudinal median and side edges thereof. The ribs are of a length to have their ends arranged between the transverse median and the ends of element 5|. The threaded stem of the latter is designated 64.
The guard element 52 may be of the same cross sectional contour as elements 2 or 34, but element 52 is not provided with the sockets |3 or 4|, but in lieu thereof is formed with a pair of spaced parallel elongated oval-shaped sockets 65, 66 between the longitudinal median and side edges thereof. The sockets are of a length to have their ends arranged between the transverse median and each end of element 52. The central square opening in element 52.for the passage of stem 64 is designated 68.
The slots 53, 54 align with sockets 65, 66 respectively when the blade 53 is mounted upon element 52. The ribs 62, 63 are to pass through slots 53, 54 respectively and seat in the sockets 65, 66 respectively when the holder element 5| is mounted upon blade 50. The ribs 62, E3 coact with the slots 53, 54 and sockets B5, 66 to provide the same function as the coacting of the lugs 3|, 32 with the openings 22, 23, 24, and sockets I3 or the coaction of the lugs 48 with the openings 43, 44, 45, 46 and sockets 4|. Such function prevents a portion or portions of the blade shifting or the bodily shifting of the blade as an entirety relative to the other elements of the razor when the latter is used, as well as functioning to rein force the head part and. arms of the blade.
What I claim is:-
In a safety razor, a handle formed with a socket for a part of its length, said socket of two different diameters, the portion of smallest diameter being threaded, the portion oflargest diameter opening at the forward end of the handle, a guard formed with a centrally arranged polygonal shaped opening and lengthwise extending grooves adjacent its side edges, a holder having an integral stem formed of a polygonal shaped forward part having a pair of spaced side faces parallel to the edges of the holder and extending through said opening and into said portion of largest diameter, said stem having a reduced peripherally threaded rear part engaging with the aforesaid threaded socket portion, a reversible blade positioned between the holder and guard, said blade being formed with a lengthwise furcation for inserting it in position from corresponding ends of said holder and guard, said furcation having parallel side walls for contacting said pair of spaced side faces for guiding the blade during its lengthwise insertion between the holder and guard, e
opening at one end of and having its base disposed between the transverse median and the other end of the blade, said base opposing in close relation another side face of the said forward part, and said holder, guard and blade having coacting interengaging blade positioning means disposed inwardly adjacent respectively to the side edges of the holder, to the grooves of the guard and to the side edges of the blade.
