  • Mounting means for revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing mounted adiacent the opposite ends of said shaft, a multiplicity of door wings, hangers on each of said door wings, swinging members interconnecting said carriers and said hangers, a roller latching device for normally maintaining said door wings in radial positions with respect to said vertical shaft, and means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in the normal position of said door wings and interlocking said swinging members with said carriers: while permitting removal of said door wings from said carriers when said door wings are in semi-collapsed position.
  • Mounting means for revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing mounted adjacent the opposite ends of said shaft, a multiplicity of door wings, hangers on each of said door wings, swinging members interconnecting said carriers and said hangers, a roller latching device for normally maintaining said door wings in radial positions with respect to said vertical shaft, means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in the normal position of said door wings and interlocking said swinging members with said carriers while permitting removal of said door wings from said carriers when said door wings are in semi-collapsed position, channel-Ways formed in said carriers, and diametrically segmental pivotal locking members carried by said hangers, said diametrically segmental members being adapted to slip endwise of said channel-ways when said door wings are moved to semi-collapsed position to bring said door wings to fully collapsed position.
  • Means for mounting revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing mounted adjacent each end of said shaft, a multiplicity of door wings, hangers on said door wings, swinging members interconnecting said hangers with said carriers, spring pressed roller members supported with respect to said housings and operating to normally engage said hangers when said door Wings are in radial position, means operative from the exterior of said housings for controlling the latching tension of said roller members with respect to said hangers, and separate means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in the radial position of said hangers.
  • Means for mounting revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing mounted adjacent each end of said shaft, a multiplicity of door wings, hangers on said door wings, swinging member-s interconnecting said hangers with said carriers, spring pressed roller members supported with respect to said housings and operating to normally engage said hangers when said door wings are in radial position, separate means in said housing for manually controlling the position of said roller members, a rotatable adjusting screw disposed within said housing and operative from the exterior thereof for adjusting the tension on said roller members, and separate means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in the radial position of said hangers.
  • Means for mounting revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing located adjacent opposite ends of said shaft, a multiplicity of door hangers, swinging members interconnecting said door hangers with said carriers, a set of four radially disposed passage-ways in said housing, a spring pressed roller carrier mounted for reciprocation in each of said passage-ways, a roller member journaled in each of said roller carriers, means carried by said hangers and normally engaged by said roller members for latching the door hangers in radial position, and separate means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in the radial position of said hangers.

Referring to the drawings in more detail, the revolving doors have been indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 at SI, 32, 33, and 35 in normal position and mounted on a vertical axis by means of a sleeve member, indicated generally at 43 rotating in upper and lower bearings having its lower extremity 35 journaled in socket 36 and its upper extremity 31 journaled in socket 3B. Socket 36 is mounted in the floor structure indicated at 39', while socket 38 is mounted in the upper structure indicated at 49. Socket 36 may be tapered to receive the end of the sleeve member 33. A rod is providedinteriorly of the sleeve member 3 and is provided with a projecting knob which projects out of the sleeve about thirty inches above the floor for allowing the door to be moved out ofit's position. The several doors are provided with suitable guard means indicated generally at 4|. The hardware constituting the braceless panic release roller latching device is indicated in the upper and lower positions on the revolving door at M and 45.
In Figure 3, I have shown the braceless panic release roller latching revolving door hardware in which door 32 is in normal position, but wherein doors iii, 33, and 3e are in collapsed position due to the pressure exerted against them under conditions of panic. The sleeve 43 which supports the doors has a longitudinally extending groove 43a therein coacting with a groove Ia formed in the carrier i and groove 200 formed in housing 2, forming coacting key-ways for the key M. The housing 2 is a casting shown more clearly in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 having a central sleeve portion shown at 6 having a cylindrical bore extending therethrough for receiving sleeve 43 and a substantially rectangular external periphery having pockets on each face thereof for receiving the ends of springs M which form the control means for the latching rollers for each of the wings of the revolving door. The pockets are formed from the fiat side walls of the central rectangular portion 46 intermediate the outwardly protruding corners of the said central portion 46. The housing 2 is provided with a hollow interior and side walls which extend in four radial directions, as shown. Each of the hollow arms of the housing 2 is provided with an aperture 2b through which a tool in inserted for adjusting the tension of spring ZI. Each of the hollow casings forming the arms of housing 2 is provided with a side opening represented at 20 into which eccentric l is fitted and locked into position by pins It for coaction with the roller carriers 9 as will be described hereinafter in more detail. The carrier i is connected with housing 2 by means of screws 24 which pass through apertures Ib and carrier I and into the countersunk screw-threaded recesses 2d in housing 2. Each of the radially disposed revolving doors is provided with hanger sections I5 and I6 constituting the upper support M and the lower support 45. The hanger sections it? and I6 are secured on opposite sides of the door by means of bolts H, as shown. The structure of the hanger is more clearly set forth in Figs. 20-28 from which it will be seen that plate It is provided with rearwardly projecting bosses I541 coacting with the inwardly projecting integral bosses Iiia on hanger section I3.
The hanger sections are shaped to receive the carrier I and housing 2 and to form a pocket within the mortise cut in the door in which pocket, the carrier and housing are arranged to operate. The rearwardly projecting portion I51) on hanger section 55 is provided with a vertically disposed journal represented generally at [50 for receiving the pin member 6. Pin member 6 projects through the bore 3a in the swinging member 3. Swinging member 3 is more clearly represented in Figs. 33 and 34 as having a horizontally extending bore 3b disposed normal to the vertically extending bore The swinging member 3 has an arcuate shaped face 30 thereon coacting with the circular face of the carrier I. Swinging member 3 has a vertically projecting stud 3d thereon which enters the aligned aperture Id in carrier I. There are four of the swinging members 3 each having an upwardly projecting stud 3d and each projecting into an aperture Id in the carrier I. There are four symmetrically disposed apertures Id in the carrier I for receiving the four studs 3d. The swinging members 3 are capable of limited annular movement from a position radial with respect to the center of sleeve 43 to a position limited by abutment of the swinging members 3 with the carrier I, as shown more clearly in Figs. 12 and 13. The collapsed position of three of the swinging members 3 is shown more clearly in Fig. 3 wherein doors 3|, 34, and 33 are collapsed, but wherein door 32 has not as yet moved to collapsed position. It will be observed that swinging members 3 are pivoted about pins 6 allowing the doors to swing out of aligned position with respect thereto, as shown at, for example, in the position of door 33 in Fig. 3. The pins 6 are each provided with recesses which we have represented at 6a, which recesses are adapted to receive a locking means by which the doors are maintained in a radial position. The swinging members 3 serve as a carrier for the elements of the locking means, which elements we have shown as ball 23 and a pressure communicating rod member 3. Ball 23 which is immediately adjacent the carrier I tends to seat in the recess Ie when the swinging member 3 is moved to the position in which the doors are collapsed which permits displacement of the pressure rod 4 and the retraction of the second ball 23 from recess 6a in pin 6 thereby allowing the door to be swung to collapsed position. The pin 6 is keyed to the hanger section I5 by means of a set screw 22 which passes through a threaded aperture in the rearwardly projecting portion 41. The rearwardly projecting portion 4'! has a vertically extending bore therein which receives the pin 6, enabling the pin 6 to be anchored by means of set screw 22 with the upper portion thereof and project downwardly and through the recess in the insert 8, as shown more clearly in Figs. 9 and 10. The hanger section I5 has the rearwardly projecting portion 41 thereof provided with a horizontally extending recess I5b of a diameter slightly larger than the projecting stud of the insert 3 so that pin 6 may retain the stud 8 in position whereby the engaging surface thereof shown at 812 may serve as a latch with respect to roller I4. The dimensions of the rearwardly projecting portion 41 of hanger section i5 and the contour thereof are such that the housing 2 and the carrier I are wholly embraced thereby. The bolt member I1, by which the hanger sections are secured on opposite sides of the door wings and united in a position to maintain the latching and locking means and swinging member in position, insures the continuous alignment of the several component members of the hardware.
The roller members I4 which are mounted in the radial arms of the housing 2 are each adjustable with respect to spring tension. The tension spring is controlled by the arrangement of screwthreaded rod It in the roller carrier 9. A tool may be inserted through aperture 2b to move spanner nut II to the desired position to fix the proper tension on spring 2!. It will be noted that roller carrier 9 carries a vertically extending bearing pin I3 therein on which there is journaled the latching roller I4. The projecting screw-threaded rod member I8 which is mounted in roller carrier 9, as at 8w, as indicated more clearly in Figs. 9 and 10, provides means for ad.- justing the tension on spring 2|. The bearing pin I3 is journaled in opposite bearings shown at 92) in roller carrier 9. A recess is provided in roller carrier 9 for receiving the end of the pin la in the eccentric 1. The aperture 9d in the roller carrier 9 permits a tool to be inserted thereuntil part. l2' is inaposition so thatit' may act:

the roller member 14. and unlatching the door from its normally radially disposed position. In order to prevent ejection of the roller carrier 9" under force oi spring 2! when the door is moved out of radial position, we provide a retaining'pin projecting through one wall of the housing 2' into the path of the movable carrier 9.
Since roller I4 is forced outwardly by pressure of. spring 2!, it will resist any ordinary and reasonable effort to move insert 8. However; by exerting a predetermined pressure on hangers. I5 and I5, insert 8, through roller 14 and the bearing pin l3, such pressure will cause roller carrier 9 to compress spring 2| and the inward movement of roller l4 releases insert 8, allowing hangers l5 and Hi to swing about the center of' the recess id shown in Fig. 1.
When it'is desired to release the pressureon' spring 2!, so as to permit the wings to collapse freely, the eccentric 1 may be operated to draw the roller carrier 9 into housing 2. On one side of eccentric 1, there is a projecting lug 'la.which entersinto the slot 90 in carrier 9; By inserting. key 50 inthe hexagonal hole. and turning eccentric 1 one quarter turn, carrier 9"is drawn back, thus bringing roller 8. flush with the extremity 'of housing 2, which leaves insert 8, carried by hanger on the door wing, free to swingto one side.
In carrier I, there are providediour openings id and in which openings, the bosses 301 on swinging members 3 fit. Swinging members 3.are free to swing with the center of the bosses as. axes. It will be noted that swinging member 3' is held to .hanger l5 by pin 6 which is, in turn, anchored to hanger [5 by aset screw 22 which prevents rotation of pin 6; Swinging member 3 has an opening 3b for balls 23 spaced by rod 4. The functions of rod 4 and balls 23' are that'when wings are in the position, as shown in Fig. 12, one ball 23 rests in a socket 6a in pin Sand'as long as the center lines of swinging member. 3' and hangers l5 and I6 coincide, spacers 4 and balls 23 remain in the position, as shown in Fig. 12, and willremain in this position until'the wing is moved to the point where swinging member 3 is stopped by abutment with aportion of carrier I, as shown in Fig. 13, and when this point is reached, ball 23 will be in a position to enter. socket la in carrier I. In this position, the hangers E5 and it will cause pin 6 to rotate with it and this action will cause the socket ea in pin 6 to eject and force ball 23 against rod 4 which will'force ball 23. into the socket le in housing I. This action causes swinging member 3' to be held stationary in relation to carrier l' as long as the center lines of swinging member 3S and hangers l5 and i6 disagree. t will be noted that, attached to hangers l5 and I6 is part'lz'secured in position by screws 25!, shown iniFig; 15; which acts as an axle for hangers l5 and it when center lines of swinging member 3'and hangers l5 and it coincide, but when swinging member 3 assumes a position as shown in Fig. 13, part I2 is free to pass through the channel in carrier l. The purpose of rod 4 and balls 23 is'to hold swinging member 3 in the position shown in Fig. 13

Figs. 12'and 13 show part .5. whose function is to make a' tight joint. at: the junction of the swinging member 3 withthe hangers l5 and it in position on the door wings and act in the capacity of a wearing member. Carrier l and housing 2 are held together'by bolts 25. While wehave shown a roller for efiecting the latching ofthe doors, some other form of latching device may be readily employed.
The panic release revolving door. hardware of our invention wholly depends upon the roller latching device for maintaining the doors in radial'position and is wholly'braceless so'far as any horizontally extending struts are concerned. We have found the structure of panic release hardware, as set forth herein, highly practical iii-manufacture, production, assembly and operation, and, while we have described the preferred form of our invention, we desire that it be understood that modifications may be. made by those skilled in the art and we intend'no limitations upon our invention other than are imposed by the scope' of the appended claims;
What we claim as new and desire to secure by LettersP'atent of the United States is as follows:

Ina revolving doorstructure, a set of door mountings, a vertically disposed rotatable shaft. apair of carriers mounted on said shaft, said carriers'each having diametrically disposed vertica-lly aligned sockets therein, swinging mem bers, each having a downwardly depending stud engaging a socket in said carriers, said door mountings supported by said swinging members, roller members supported by said carriers, means mounted on each of said door mountings for engaging saidroller members when said swinging members are aligned with said door mountings in radial position, and spring means for urging said roller members into engagement with the aforesaid means.
4. In a revolving door structure, a set of door mountings, a vertically disposed rotatable shaft, a pair of carriers mounted on said shaft, said carriers each having diametrically disposed'verh tically aligned sockets therein, swinging members, each having a downwardly depending stud FT du engaging a socket in said carriers, said door mountings supported by said swinging members, roller members supported by said'carriers, means mounted on each of said door mountings for engaging said roller members when said swinging members are aligned with said door mountings in radial position, and adjustable tension means for urging said roller members into engagement with the aforesaid means.
5. In a revolving door structure, a set of door mountings, a vertically disposed rotatable shaft. a pair of carriers mounted on said shaft, said carriers each having diametrically disposed vertically aligned sockets therein, swinging members, each having a downwardly depending stud engaging a socket in said carriers, said door mountings supported by said swinging members, roller members supported by said carriers, means mounted on each of said door mountings for engaging said roller members when said swinging members are aligned with said door mountings in radial position, and adjustable tension means disposed in radial positions in each of said carriers, corresponding in number to the number of roller members, and operating to continuously urge said roller members into engagement with the aforesaid means.
6. In a revolving door structure, a set of door mountings, a vertically disposed rotatable shaft, a pair of carriers mounted on said shaft, said carriers each having vertically disposed and aligned sockets therein, swinging members each having a downwardly depending stud engaging a socket in one of said carriers, said swinging members supporting said door mountings, roller members sup ported by said carriers, engaging means mounted on each of said door mountings for engaging said roller members when said swinging members are aligned with said door mountings in radial position, spring means for continuously urging said roller members into engagement with said engaging means, adjustable devices mounted in said carriers and angularly shiftable to individually retract said roller members with respect to the first said engaging means, and separate interlocking means disposed in each of said swinging members for selectively interlocking each swinging member with the door mounting or the carrier associated therewith.
7. In a revolving door structure, a set of door mountings, a vertically disposed rotatable shaft, a pair of carriers mounted on said shaft, said carriers each having vertically disposed and aligned sockets therein, swinging members each having a downwardly depending stud engaging a socket in one of said carriers, said swinging members supporting said door mountings, roller members supported by said carriers, engaging means mounted on each of said door mountings for engaging said roller members when said swinging members are aligned with said door mountings in radial position, spring means for continuously urging said roller members into engagement with said engaging first mentioned means, eccentrics mounted in the side walls of said carriers and having means thereon operative for individually retracting said roller members with respect to said engaging means, and means for interlocking said swinging members and said door mountings in said radial position and said swinging members and said carriers in collapsed position.
8. Mounting means for revolving doors comprising a vertically disposed shaft member, a pair of carriers on said shaft member, a multiplicity of door wings, hangers on each of said door wings, swinging members interconnecting said hangers and said carriers, and means extending through said swinging members for locking said doors in collapsed position when said doors are moved to a limiting position away from the normal position thereof.
9. Mounting means for revolving doors comprising a vertically disposed shaft member, a pair of carriers on said shaft member, a multiplicity of door wings, hangers on each of said door wings, swinging members interconnecting said hangers and said carriers, roller members for normally latching said door wings in radial position, and locking means extending through said swinging members for locking said door wings in collapsed position when said door wings. have been moved out of radial position to a maximum limit position.
10. Means for mounting revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a pair of carriers on said shaft, a set of door wings having hangers thereon, swinging members: extending between said hangers and said carriers, an insert carried by each of said hangers and having a cam shaped face thereon, spring pressed roller members mounted with respect to said carriers for normally engaging said cam faced inserts for latching said door wings in radial position, and sepa rate means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in said radial position of said door wings.
11. Mounting means for revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing mounted adjacent each end of said vertical shaft, a multiplicity of door mountings, swinging members pivotally connected with said door mountings and journaled in said carriers, roller members carried by said housing, means on said door mountings engageable by said roller members for latching said door mountings in radial position, and separate means extending through said swinging members for locking said door mountings with respect to said swinging members in said radial position.
12. Mounting means for revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing disposed adjacent each end of said shaft, a multiplicity of door wings, door hangers carried by said door wings, a pin member passing vertically through each of said door hangers, a swinging member pivoted on said pin member and journaled in said carrier, an insert carried by said pin member and having a cam shaped face thereon, roller members vertically disposed in diametrically opposite portions of said housing, and means for yieldably urging the said roller members into engagement with said cam faced inserts for normally maintaining said door wings in radial positions, and separate means extending through said swinging members for locking said door hangers with respect to said swinging members in said radial positions.
13. Mounting means for revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing mounted adiacent the opposite ends of said shaft, a multiplicity of door wings, hangers on each of said door wings, swinging members interconnecting said carriers and said hangers, a roller latching device for normally maintaining said door wings in radial positions with respect to said vertical shaft, and means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in the normal position of said door wings and interlocking said swinging members with said carriers: while permitting removal of said door wings from said carriers when said door wings are in semi-collapsed position.
14. Mounting means for revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing mounted adjacent the opposite ends of said shaft, a multiplicity of door wings, hangers on each of said door wings, swinging members interconnecting said carriers and said hangers, a roller latching device for normally maintaining said door wings in radial positions with respect to said vertical shaft, means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in the normal position of said door wings and interlocking said swinging members with said carriers while permitting removal of said door wings from said carriers when said door wings are in semi-collapsed position, channel-Ways formed in said carriers, and diametrically segmental pivotal locking members carried by said hangers, said diametrically segmental members being adapted to slip endwise of said channel-ways when said door wings are moved to semi-collapsed position to bring said door wings to fully collapsed position.
15. Means for mounting revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing mounted adjacent each end of said shaft, a multiplicity of door wings, hangers on said door wings, swinging members interconnecting said hangers with said carriers, spring pressed roller members supported with respect to said housings and operating to normally engage said hangers when said door Wings are in radial position, means operative from the exterior of said housings for controlling the latching tension of said roller members with respect to said hangers, and separate means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in the radial position of said hangers.
16. Means for mounting revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing mounted adjacent each end of said shaft, a multiplicity of door wings, hangers on said door wings, swinging member-s interconnecting said hangers with said carriers, spring pressed roller members supported with respect to said housings and operating to normally engage said hangers when said door wings are in radial position, separate means in said housing for manually controlling the position of said roller members, a rotatable adjusting screw disposed within said housing and operative from the exterior thereof for adjusting the tension on said roller members, and separate means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in the radial position of said hangers.
17. Means for mounting revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing located adjacent opposite ends of said shaft, a multiplicity of door hangers, swinging members interconnecting said door hangers with said carriers, a set of four radially disposed passage-ways in said housing, a spring pressed roller carrier mounted for reciprocation in each of said passage-ways, a roller member journaled in each of said roller carriers, means carried by said hangers and normally engaged by said roller members for latching the door hangers in radial position, and separate means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in the radial position of said hangers.
18. Means for mounting revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing located adjacent opposite ends of said shaft, a multiplicity of door hangers, swinging members interconnecting said door hangers with said carriers, a set of four radially disposed passageways in said housing, a spring pressed roller carrier mounted for reciprocation in each of said passage-ways, a roller member journaled in each of said roller carriers, means carried by said hangers and normally engaged by said roller members for latching the door hangers in radial position, means for preventing the ejection of said roller carriers when the door hangers are moved to collapsed position and out of alignment with the passage-ways in said housing, and separate means for interlocking said swinging members with said hangers in the radial position of said hangers.
19. Means for mounting revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing located adjacent opposite ends of said shaft, a multiplicity of door mountings, swinging members interconnecting said door mountings with said carriers, a set of four radially disposed passage-ways in said housing, a spring pressed roller carrier mounted for reciprocation in each of said passage-ways, a roller member journaled in each of said roller carriers, means carried by said mountings and normally engaged by said roller members for latching the door mountings in radial position, pin members extending across the path of each of said roller carriers for preventing the ejection of said roller carriers when said door mountings are moved to collapsed position out of alignment with said radially disposed passage-ways, and means for interlocking said swinging members with said mountings in the radial position of said mountings, and interlocking said swinging members with said carriers in the collapsed position of said mountings.
20. Means for mounting revolving doors comprising a vertical shaft, a carrier and housing located adjacent opposite ends of said shaft, a multiplicity of door wings having hangers thereon, swinging members interconnecting said hangers with said carriers, a set of four radially disposed passage-Ways in said housing, a roller carrier mounted for reciprocation in each of said passage-ways, a roller member journaled in each of said roller carriers, means carried by said hangers and normally engaged by said roller members for maintaining the door wings in radial position, and means extending through each of said swinging members for locking said door wings in collapsed position.
21. Mounting hardware for revolving doors having panic release and collapsing means comprising a vertically disposed shaft, a pair of carriers on said shaft, a plurality of door wings, hangers on each of said door wings, swinging members interconnecting said hangers and said carriers, latching means disposed between said carriers and said hangers for maintaining said door wings normally in radial position, and looking means for interlocking said hangers and said swinging members in said radial position, said locking means being operative forinterlocking said swinging members and said carriers and unlocking said swinging members and said hangers when said door wings have been displaced a predetermined distance from said normal radial position, said hangers thereby being subject to further displacement with respect to said normal radial position.
