SINK AND DRARNENG BGARD, PARTICU- LARLY FGR DQMES'EHC USE Owen Thomas Webber, London, England Application August 11,
In Great Britain July 6,
11 Claims. (Cl. 4-189) The present invention relates to improvements in sinks and draining boards, particularly for domestic use.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby integral metal sinks and draining boards may be readily constructed to cover a comparatively large range of choice in types and overall sizes in a particularly cheap and convenient manner.
According to the invention there is provided a method of constructing different types of in-- tegral metal sink and draining board units to suit individual requirements which comprises forming a plurality of different parts so as to conform to a predetermined standard, for example, fillet members, sinks and draining boards arranging at least one fillet member or draining board, at least one sink, and a draining board, with the edges thereof disposed so as to engage or partially interlock with each other and welding together the edges of the selected combination from the standard parts so as to form a complete unit.
By employing this method oiimanufa'cturing the complete unit, it is possible to build up a large range of styles or types with many different overall sizes from the same comparatively few stock parts and it will be appreciated that by this means a large saving in cost of material, machinery and manufacture may be achieved, as there is no necessity to manufacture each type or size of integral unit by a special operation, which must necessitate either a large amount of manual work involving large production costs, or the use of a large amount of special machinery, which also adds largely to the cost of production on account of the substantial investment necessary in power presses and the need of providing separate dies for each size of unit.
The invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 illustrates a draining board, sink and fillet arranged in position for assembly;
Figure 2 illustrates a method of assembling two sinks adjacent to one another;
Figure 3 illustrates in detail the filler strip shown in Figure 2 Figure 4 illustrates in side elevation a combined sink and draining board provided with an apron and drawer, and
Figure 5 illustrates a sectional end elevation on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawing, a sink unit is built up of a fillet member or draining board, at least one sink and a draining board.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figure'l of the drawing, the sink unit is arranged to bebuilt up of one fillet member, one sink and a draining heard, these portions of the unit being designated ".g", B and C respectively. It will be appre- 1934, Serial No. 739,477
ciated that a large number of combinations may be formed by combining the sections A, B and C in different combinations with'at least one sec.- tion B always forming a part of the combination.
For instance from a stock of one size of draining 5 boards, C, one size of sink B and a stock of fillets A, six combinations at leastmay be built up. If in addition to a standard fillet three difierent sizes of sink and three different sizes of draining boards are kept in stock, over two hundred difierent types of sink units may be manufactured. In anyone series the dimensions of the sinks B and draining boards C from front to back thereof will of necessity be the same, but the length thereof can be arranged so that they will all be different. In addition to the above types of units additional features such as an apron, drawers, legs, cupboards and the like may be added and it will be appreciated that with these additions the number of different types of sink units which 20 may be constructed from a small number of stock parts becomes very large.
The section B comprising the sink is formed with portions of the fillet on the front and back edges thereof while the section C comprising the 5 draining board is formed with portions of the fillet disposed around three sides thereof. By this means irrespective of the combination of the sections A, B and C which may be employed a complete fillet will extend continuously around the whole of the edge of the sink unit.
Referring particularly to the construction illustrated in Figure 1, the fillet which completely surrounds the sink unit is formed in four different portions. These portions are the section A, the portions D disposed on the front and back edges of the sink 3 and the portion E surrounding three sides of the draining board C. As illustrated most clearly in section B of Figure 1 the fillet is of substantially rectangular section being arranged to form a partially enclosed channel around the edge of the unit. The fillet is formed with a vertical wall 4 extending upwardly and integrally from the upper edge of the sink 2 or the surface of the draining board C and with a horizontal wall 5 extending from the upper edge of the vertical wall 6. Depending from the free edge of the horizontal wall 5 is a second vertical wall 6 arranged parallel to the wall 5 and extending inwardly from the lower edge of the wall 6 is a further horizontal wall i arranged parallel to the wall 5 but out of engagement with the wall 4 whereby the fillet only partially encloses a space of substantially rectangular section. In the section A which forms a portion of the fillet, the wall t is curved at the ends thereof to conform with the rounded corners of the sink 2. Furthermore, the ends of the section A are partially cut away so that the upper surface of the fillet at the positions 30 where the curved ends of 'the wall 4 terminate projects out from the remainder of the surface.
As mentioned above, the corners of the sink 2 are rounded while the vertical wall 4 of the fillet portion D is straightso that the ends 8 of lar recesses cut in the ends of the section A so that the section A of the fillet joins up with the sink 2 in such a manner that the section A is continuous with the portions D of the fillet. Furthermore, the projecting portions of the section A interlock with the edge of the sink so that when the two sections of the unit are seam welded together a very satisfactory joint is obtained.
The edge of the draining board C which engages with the edge of the sink 2 remote from the fillet A is shaped to conform to the edge of the sink. The edge of the board projects beyond the ends of the fillet portion E and consequently when the edges of the sink and draining board are brought together they interlock in the same manner as the sections A and D thus allowing a satisfactory seam weld to be effected.
Figure 2 illustrates a method of constructing 'a modification where more than one sink is employed. The sinks 9 and ID are of identical construction with the sink portion B illustrated in Figure 1 and are arranged to be secured together .by seam welding the ends of the fillet portions D,
D on the front and back edges thereof and seam welding a filler strip ll shown more clearly in Figure 3 to the adjacent side edges of the two sinks;
By this means it is possible to provide a unit including two sinks in close proximity to each other and separated by a narrow metal strip disposed slightly below the upper surface of the fillets.
Figures 4 and 5 illustrate a combined sink and draining board similar in construction to that shown in Figure 1 and in addition provided with an apron l2 and a drawer l3. 'I'he apron l2 which is formed of sheet metal is secured to. the unit by bending over at right angles a small the under side of the fillet. The fillet although integral with the sections associated therewith will comprise four separate portions A, D, E, D hereinbefore described which are seam welded together. The drawer I3 is added to the unit by welding the drawer frame M to the underside of the draining board. Alternatively, the drawer frame may be welded to the apron which is in turn welded to the under side of the fillet. The drawer l3 which may be of any convenient type is provided with guide members at each side thereof which are arranged to slide in corresponding grooves provided in the drawer frame M. It will be appreciated that instead of one drawer two or more drawers may be provided particularly if a draining board is provided at each side of the sink.
If required a splash back may be readily provided by welding the said back to the rear edge or fillet of the sink and drainingboard. A further modified form which may also be constructed consists of a combined sink and draining board supported on legs. The legs which may be formed of tubular metal are welded to the under sides of the draining board and sink at convenient positions. Instead of the drawer frame l4 illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, cupboards, racks or shelves may be suspended from the unit by welding these to the under side of the draining board or to an apron and may be employed for accommodating kitchen utensils such as brushes, bowls and the like which are necessary at a sink.
The method of constructing the units in accordance with the present invention makes it possible to manufacture the units much more cheaply than would be the case if the units were manufacturedfrom single pieces of sheet metal. As mentioned above the saving in cost is to a large extent due to the fact that there is no necessity to employ a large amount of machinery, but there is also saving in cost as the metal employed is much cheaper than the metal which would have to be employed if a unit of great length was made from a single piece of metal.
For instance to make a unit with one sink andtwo draining boards, the sheet metal area involved would be such that it would be necessary to employ specially rolled metal of high quality at an extra cost per pound while if the same sink is built up from'smaller sheet metal areas by the method hereinbefore described, a cheaper price per pound for the same quality metal prevailswhich can moreover be more economically used with less wastage to achieve equally satisfactory results. Y
