UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ROBERT S. WILEY, OF BLOUNTSVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STIRRUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,974, dated April 30, 1878 application tiled March 29, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. WILEY, M. D., of Blountsville, in the county of Sullivan and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciication, and in Which- Figure 1 is a side view. tional view.
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in stirrups, which said improvement consists in the arrangement in the stirrup of a serrated pad or cushion of rubber, having coiled metallic springs arranged under it, the object of which is principally to prevent the foot from slipping. It also insures a pleasant spring or elasticity to the stirrup, and will, in winter, prevent the stirrup from freezing to the foot when covered with snow or ice.
In the drawings, A is the stirrup, which may be of any suitable construction, and may be manufactured of Wood, metal, or other suitable material. Bis a pad or cushion of india- Fig. 2 is asecrubber, deeply serrated, which is placed upon or embedded in the stirrup, and secured by any suitable means. The cushion may consist of one or more thicknesses of material, as may be desired.
The under side of the cushion is provided with recesses d d, in which I place small but stout coiled springs c c, resting upon the stirrup and forcing the pad or cushion upward, thus making it elastic and pleasant to the tread.
By the arrangement in the stirrup of the cushion B the foot is absolutely prevented from slipping, and elasticity is insured by the springs c c. Besides, excessive wear, either upon the shoes of the horseman or upon the stirrup, is prevented.
It is obvious that the pad or cushion may be of any suitable dimensions.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with a stirrup, of a serrated india-rubberpad or cushion, B, having recesses d d, and the coiled springs c c, substantially as described, for the purposes shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own l have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT S. VILEY, M. D.
