This invention relates generally to looms and more particularly to looms especially adapted for making fabrics with the design through to the back.
In the ordinary loom, a plate is provided on the comb casting for properly positioning the tufts for action by the comb. In operating position, this comb plate has its top edge above the corresponding top edge of the comband is normally held in this position by the action of springs. After the comb has left the fabric, the comb casting carries the comb and plate forwardly'under the fabric and toward the breast plate'and during this forward movement the top edge of the plate ordinarily protrudes above the top edge of the comb and drags along the bot tom or rear of the woven fabric. 'When the fabric which is being woven is a through to the back weave the tuft bights usually extend to the rear of the fabric for visibility, and the dragging of the plate against the rear of the fabric tends to loosen and damage the tuft bights which is objectionable.
It is an object of the present invention to prevent this dragging of the'comb plate against the rear of the fabric.
This object is accomplished by providing novel mechanism for pulling the plate downward independently. of the warps so that its upper edge is below the comb when the comb and plate are moving forwardly toward the breast plate.
Another object is .to provide mechanism of this character which is simple in construction and positive in operation.
A further object is to provide mechanism of this character which may be readily mounted on looms of ordinary construction.
With reference to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a loom embodying the present invention, parts being shown in section and parts being removed for thesake of clearness.

plate A comb casting M1 is fast to arms I5 and carried on the outer end of this casting is a comb Hi. The arms H5 at one end are connected to a movable shaft H for imparting horizontal movement thereto. The other arm ends are connected to another shaft lt for imparting a vertical movement to the casting. This is ordinary comb mechanism which is operatively connected to the drive shaft in the usual manner and swings the comb i6 with the rise and fall required to bring the tufts up to the position where a reed i 9 canbeat them into the fabric.
For the purpose of properly positioning each tuft and for initially turning the end of each tuft into the path ofthe comb, a comb plate 20 is'fastened to arms 2i so that it has face to face sliding contact with the outer face of comb IS. The arms 2! are pivoted to shaft ll in order that the comb plate 20 can have a rise and fall movement relative to the comb I6 whereby the top or tuft engaging edge of the comb plate 20 can assume positions above and below the plane of the top of the comb. The operating position of the comb plate is with its top edge above the corresponding edge of .the comb i6 and it is normally held in this position by the action of two flat strip springs 22 each of which is fastened at one end to the comb-casting and has its other free end bearing against integral lugs or flanges 23 projecting from the comb plate. The springs 22 are so arrangedthat they exert their tension in a direction to bring the comb plate to its operating position with its upper edge above theupper edge of the comb. Only a relatively light tension is required to force the comb plate to operative position, and conversely only a relatively light counterforce is required to shift or move the comb plate downwardly to inoperative position so that its edge is below the edge of the comb I6. I The combined tension of the stretched warps supplies this counter force and shifts the comb plate at'the proper time in the cycle of It comprehends furnishing means for counter acting the action of the springs 22 at-a time when the comb plate has moved free of the action of the combined warps. It utilizes the power of the main drive shaft ll of the loom.
Referring to Figure l, the main drive shaft I l is journalled as usual in bearings (not shown) on the side frame of the loom. Midway the length of shaft l I a collar 24 is fastened thereto in any desirable manner. This collar is formed with a cam face or portion 25.
Mounted underneath the shaft H is a lever or bar 26.. This lever is provided with a lug or bracket 21 protruding above its upper edge. The bracket supports a laterally extending pin 28 which rotatably supports a roller 29. One end of the lever is slidably supported and guided by a bracket 30 mounted on the rear lower cross beam of the frame. The front end of the lever is connected, to a lug 3| fast to a shaft 32 rockably supported by brackets 33 on the front lower cross beam of the frame. This rock shaft 32 is connected by means of lugs 34 to the lower movement under thewoven fabric toward the breast plate 12.
The shaft 32 may be held in normal inoperative position by means of a spiral spring 31- which has one end secured to a fixed portion of the loom frame, preferably the bracket 33 for mounting the operatingarm of the knife (not shown), which bracket is secured to the lower front cross beam of the frame. The other end of the spiral spring is connected. to a protruding lug 39 fast to the shaft 32.

In a loom for making tuft pile fabrics having the tuft bights visible at the rear of the fabric, a drive shaft, a comb, a plate positioned adjacent the comb and having its upper edge normally protruding above the top edge of the comb for positioning the tuft bights, said plate being adapted to be moved by engagement with the warp threads of the fabric so that its upper comprising a leveroperatively connected to the ANTHONY M.
