ll Claim.
This invention relates to an improved loom shuttle structure, such as is particularly adapted for use in weft replenishing looms and involves a new and improved arrangement of the parts in connection with a tensioning element for rendering the tension effective on the first pick after transfer.
One object of the invention is the provision of a loom shuttle structure of this character wherein the tensioning means is so positioned with relation to the thread block as to be efiective immediately for the application of tension to the thread even before the thread is positioned 4 within the thread eye.
Another object of,the invention is the provision in a device of this character of a thread passage located in operative relation with the thread eye and so formed as to have a tendency to resist looping of the thread as well as its accidental escape from the thread passage while the shuttle is in operation.
A further object of the invention is the provision in a device of this character of separate tension members mounted for rectilinear movement transversely of the path of travel of the thread and so positioned as to receive the thread and be efiective for applying tension thereto on the first pick after transfer, together with a thread passage located between the tension members and the thread eye, so shaped as to insure a continuous and proper delivery of the tension thread to the thread eye in such a manner that the thread will be delivered under substantially uniform tension.
5 Other objects and advantages of the invention relate to various improved details of con-- struction and novel forms and arrangements of the parts as will be more fully set forth in the detailed description to follow.

Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the thread delivery end of a loom shuttle of the type adapted for use in weft replenishing looms, and embodying one form of my improved structure,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the shuttle end shown in Fig. 1, taken-substantially through the thread receiving channel of the thread block,
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the thread block illustrating the same as it appears when removed from the shuttle,
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the thread block, taken substantially along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the thread block, taken substantially along the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, and,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the tension members.
In that form of the invention illustrated herewith l designates a loom shuttle body provided with a central opening 2 extending therethrough as is usual in weft replenishing loom shuttles, and having a bobbin 3 mounted within the opening 2 in the usual manner with, weft thread 3 wound thereon for delivery to the weave as is usual in devices of this character.
A thread block 6 is suitably secured within a thread block opening l formed in the shuttle body and communicating with the central opening 2 as is common in devices of this character.
The thread block it is provided with a thread receiving channel ii extending substantially longitudinally thereof, the lower portion of which forms a normal thread passage 9 separated from the upper portion thereof by means of longitudinal ribs Ml, thus forming a thread passage extending throughout the major portion of the thread block, which may be of a substantially circular contour in cross section to better retain the thread therein and prevent it from ballooning or escaping from the thread passage proper when slackness occurs in the thread as during the changing of the direction of movement of the shuttle. The thread block is also provided with a downwardly and forwardly inclined leader M, and a downwardly inclined end portion 02 which normally extends beneath an overhangingledge M carried by the thread block and located upon the opposite side of the channel 8. The leader H and downwardly inclined end portion i2 of the thread block tend to guide the weft thread downwardly into the normal thread passage 9, as tension is exerted upon the weft thread by the tension members immediately after transfer, to insure proper location of the weft thread within the passage 9, and these elements also serve to prevent escape of the weft thread from the passage 9 in the normal operation of the shuttle.
A pair of tension members or plates l5 are mounted for sliding movement upon a shaft i6 extending transversely of the shuttle body, and the tension members i5 are each provided with a laterally bent end portion ll. The laterally bent end portions H are adapted for mounting in opposed openings I8 and I9 formed in the thread block and serve as guiding and supporting means 'for assisting in maintaining the tension members l5 in opposed relation with each other while permitting free rectilinear movement of the tension members towards and from each other in a direction transversely of the thread passage 9. A tensioning screw 20 is threaded within one side of the thread block and in opposed relationiwith one of the tension members, and the tensioning screw 20 may be provided with a reduced central portion 2| for .supporting and guiding a coiled spring 22 which sistance is provided against upward movement' of the thread between the tension members after the thread has once been positioned within the passage 8, to tend to prevent escape of the thread from between the tension members or from the thread channel during the operations of the shuttle.
A detent 24 may be provided with a rib 25 adapted to fit within the slotted end of the adjusting screw 20 and may be pivotally mounted, as at 26, in such a manner as to be movable into position for the engagement of the rib 25 within the slot H in the end of the tension screw 2|! before the thread block 6 is inserted within the thread block opening I of the shuttle. Upon removal of the thread block from the shuttle body the tension screw 2% may be set as is desired to impart the required degree of tension to the tension members for the type and size of weft thread employed.
Steel bushings 29 may be inserted in the opposed openings l8 and is formed in the thread block to prevent undue wear of the thread block by the laterally bent portions Q1 of the tension members l5.
The substantially enclosed character of the thread passage 9 in conjunction with the provision of the downwardly inclined leader ii and the inclined end portion l2 extendingbeneath the ledge it practically prevents the escape of the weft thread after its insertion within the thread passage 9, while the particular "form and construction of the-inclined leader it and downturned end it are such as to offer no obstruction to the entrance of the thread into the thread passage 9, but on the contrary serve to positively guide the thread 4 into' the passage as tension is applied to the thread.
While I have shown and described a single tension spring 22 positioned for engagement with one of the tension members 'I 5, it is to be understood that any suitable or equivalent resilient means may be similarly positioned with refer= ence to the other tension member [5 whereby positive tension may be applied to both of the tension members whenever it maybe found desirable." The degree of tension exerted by the spring 22may be varied as indicated by properly setting the screw 2|! and then holding the screw against rotation while the shuttle is in use by means of 'the detent 24, and, if desired, the spring or springs 22 may be changed when necessary to provide greater or less tensioning effect on the members l5 as may be desired.
In order to obtain substantially uniform and immediately effective tension upon the weft thread during the operation of the shuttle. and
on the first pick after transfer, the tension members l5 are located rearwardly of the thread passage 9 in the thread block and are extended upwardly from the level of the thread passage sufficiently to be substantially completely efiec- 5 tive for applying the desired degree of tension to the weft thread upon the commencement of movement of the shuttle after transfer and before the weft thread is -completely drawn within the thread passage 9, as is shown more particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The location of the tension members 15 rearwardly of the thread block from the thread eye, and the rounded formation of the upper end portions 28 thereof, insure the positive guidance of the weft 15 thread into tensioned position between the tension members and the proper application of tension thereto immediately upon the beginning of the shuttle movement after transfer.
The relatively considerable extent of the ten- 20 sion members l5 above the thread passage 9 and the rounded portion 28 of the tension members causes the weft thread 4 to be automatically drawn into position between the tension members upon the first movement of the shuttle after as transfer, after the manner shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and before the weft thread is drawn into the thread passage 9. It will be noted also upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawing that as the weft thread t is drawn into so position between the tension members it upon the first movement of the shuttle after transfer,
it is drawn downwardly into a position substantially opposite to the point of application of the tension spring 22, whereby the tension exerted 35 upon the weft thread s on the first pick after transfer, and before the weft thread is drawn into the thread passage 9 for delivery from the thread eyejis substantially the same as the tension to which the thread is subjected after being positioned within the thread passage. This tends to produce substantially complete uniformity in the weave since the tension effective upon the weft thread during the first movement of the thread after transfer is substantially the same as that exerted thereon after the weft tween the tension members on the first movement of the shuttle after transfer and provides for the application of normal tension to the thread on the first pick after transfer.
What I claim is:--
