Description
Jan. 214, 119%. D PEN R zmmsn MOLD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF RUBBER HEELS Filed'July 11, 1934 Patented Jan. 14, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MOLD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF RUBBER HEELS Application July 11, 1934, Serial No. 734,635
3 Claims. (01. 18-42) The present invention relates to molds for the production of rubber heels, and is more particularly adapted for making rubber heels of the type disclosed in my copending application filed of even date herewith. With this construction I produce a rubber heel having permanently incorporated fasteners embedded within the body of the heel during the vulcanizing operation and protruding from the attaching face.
I have provided the mold with hollow supporting pins spaced symmetrically within the mold cavity and projecting from the bottom of the mold, each of these pins being adapted to receive an attaching nail or the like, the bore of the pin being of sufficient size to freely receive the shank of the nail which is supported at its head by the upper end of the pin. The pins project through the cavity portion of the mold, which is of insufficient thickness to completely enclose the nails, the outer ends of which project therethrough after assembly. The cavity portion of the mold is supplemented by a bottom plate or its equivalent, having openings corresponding to the mold pins and designed to receive the protruding ends of the nails. The bottom portion may be removable to expose the ends of the fasteners and permit forcible removal of the finished heel from the cavity by engagement with these protruding ends.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred form of the invention, Fig. 1 represents a perspective of a heel produced by my improved mold; Fig. 2 is a section in elevation of the mold with the parts in assembled relation; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cavity portion of the mold.
Referring particularly to the drawing, it will be observed that the cavity portion of the mold is indicated at H), and is provided with the usual heel shaped cavity l2. symmetrically disposed about the bottom of this cavity are hollow mold pins l 4 which project from the bottom of the cavity, as indicated more particularly in Fig. 2. Each of these mold pins is provided with a bore l6 extending therethrough, designed for the reception of the pointed shanks of attaching nails. The upper and outer portion of each pin is tapered at l8 to provide a narrow annular support for the head of an attaching member 20. By so constructing the mold pin ample strength to resist the pressures involved is secured, while at the same time the extending head of the fastener 20 is completely interlocked with the heel body by the surrounding material. Each of the hollow mold pins may extend completely through the cavity portion l0 and the pointed ends of the fasteners ordinarily extend therebeyond. To protect these during the molding operation the assembly may be provided with a separate bottom plate 22 assembled with the cavity portion through the usual pins 24, and having fastenerreceiving openings 26 which align with the mold pins and receive the protruding ends of the fasteners. This bottom plate may be conveniently removed to permit engagement with the protruding ends of the fasteners and removal of the rubber body from the cavity upon completion of the operation.
The mold cavity is closed by a top plate 28 which may have any suitable design formed thereon to produce the tread face of the heel.
What is claimed is:
1. A mold for rubber heels comprising a cavity portion, a plurality of hollow mold pins projecting from the bottom of the cavity portion and designed to receive the shank of a headed fastener therein and support the fastener at the headed end spaced from the bottom of the cavity, and means for closing the cavity.
2. A mold for rubber heels comprising a cavity portion, a plurality of hollow mold pins projecting from the bottom of the cavity portion and designed to receive the shank of a headed fastener therein and support the fastener at the headed end spaced from the bottom of the cavity, each mold pin tapering inwardly toward its upper end to provide a narrow supporting annulus for the fastener head spaced above the bottom of the cavity, and means for closing the cavity.
3. A mold for rubber heels comprising a cavity portion, a series of hollow sup-ports projecting from one face of the cavity portion and openings extending completely through the hollow supports and the mold bottom for the projection of attaching members therethrough, means for closing the cavity portion, and a member detachably assembled with the mold and having openings which register with the openings in the mold bottom to receive the protruding ends of fasteners assembled with the hollow supports.
