This invention relates to a method 'for making pipe coupling i'parts" which "isadapted to" form certain of the coupling members more readily andwith less expenditure of. time and labor than has been possible by the methods heretofore-empmyedxvw. i cmeobject of the invention is to provide a method for forming pipe' coupling parts"mor'e expeditiously andatless 'cost' than'has been possi'ble previously "by initially forming certain of said parts together and then shaping and-"sepa rating them through operative steps which'combine certain of the operations to' efiect a' saving in'time'fand labor. l r
Another object of the invention is to provide a method forforming"pipeooupling parts by casting 'or otherwise shaping two-'oftheparts together at thesame time as *integra'l'structure and then shaping and separating theparts thus formed to'iproduce *couplingmembers Other'obj ects and. advantages ofi the invention relate to various improved method steps and errangements' :of-# steps in carrying out" theprocess as will bemore fully'seti'orth in the detailed description to follow.
(a 'sReferring to the drawing:-
Fig. l' is a longitudinal sectional view through a casting such assis adaptedtobe shaped toform a-ooupling rim and one of the members" or a pipe coupling." I Fig. 21s a similar viewoi the castingshowing the *same after threads have been cut' 'upon 1 the innen'surfaces""of'o'pposite ends and after" the formation of'a shoulder adjacent to'thethread upon' -that portion of the casti'righavingthe larger diameter,"and illustrating the position of a -"cutting tool with respect to th shape-irithe positio'n'of these elements prior to=the separation 01 the shape into coupling members.
Fig; 3 isa view similar to Figs. 1 and 2, show ing the coupling member and coupling rim member when separated from each other, as in the position occupied by them after the completion of the cutting operation indicated in Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through a coupling showing the position of the parts when assembled, and,
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of a completed coupling with the parts in assembled relation.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated herewith, I designates an integral, hollow, twodiameter casting of generally cylindrical or terete shape which may be said to comprise a portion 2 of a large diameter and a portion 3 of smaller diameter, the external diameter of the. portion o'f'a p pecouplin'g", while the por on '3 isl'bf ii 'size-as-to form one of the internal-coupling bers and be capable of -being insertedwithin-the portion 2 and-held therein by intere aging means carried. by the rimmember pling i b r i P ee o et er. 1

The'tool 8 may also be' p'r'ovided with a suit able shaped cuttingedgelffor forming a seat I I upon the portion 3, and mayhave a recess I2 andputting'dace l3 for rom'nng'an" outer shoulder l 4 on the portion '3 during the opera tionf resulting'in the separation of the parts. i "Upon 'the" completion of this operation the shape" I "isseparated to form a rim coupling mein be'r' [5 having internal threads 4 and an internal shoulder 6, and couplihg me'mb'er l's "g internal threads 5 and 'an external shoulder 'll; 40 The coupling member I6 is also provided with a seating surface I l adapted to fit against a suitable seating surface I! formed upon the end of a third coupling member [8 when the parts are assembled, as is shown in-Fig. 4 of the drawing. While in the present illustrated embodiment of the structure and in the description relating thereto the rim coupling member l5 and the male coupling member l6 are formed together as an integral structure and then shaped and sepa- 5 rated from each other, it is to be understood that the method described comprehends the formation of the rim coupling member l5 and female coupling member l8 together as an integral shape and the formation and separation of these mem- 56 that the portions 2 and 3 of the shape I are separated along a line which marks substantially the meeting of the two diameters, whereby the rim coupling member i5 and male coupling member I 6 thus formed are each of substantially uniform diameter throughout the greater portion of its extent, and the coupling member I6 is of such size as to fit within the rim coupling member l5 so that the external shoulder l4 formed thereon engages with the internal shoulder 6 of the rim coupling member when the parts are assembled.
' V The method of construction above described provides a simple and effective means for initially forming two parts of a coupling together, which produces a material saving in time and labor while permitting ready handling and manipulation of the composite shape to produce the required members adapted to be interfitted together to form a coupling.
When forming the shape I as an integral structure and then cutting and shaping the same prior to its separation into coupling member parts, the integral shape lends itself 'more readily to the operation of cutting and shaping tools than would be the case with separate elements and permits the carrying out of several cutting and shaping operations without removing the same from a holder, thus maintaining it in properly centered position for the operation of the different tools without requiring resetting.
In the separation of the shape into coupling members by the 'method above described, and when forming a rim coupling member with a male coupling member E6, the severing of the parts, and the formation of an external shoulder l4 and a suitable'seating surface H on the coupling member 15 may all be effected together and as a part of a single operation.
What I claim is:
1. The method of making pipe coupling parts which comprises, forming a hollow terete shape having one end portion thereof of a diameter throughout substantially greater than that of the opposite end portion, cutting internal threads in opposite ends of said shape and forming an annular shoulder in the end portion of greater diameter, separating said portions along a line located substantially at the point joining the twodiametered portions, and forming an external shoulder upon the portion of smaller diameter of a size adapted to fit within the internally threaded part of the portion of larger diameter. 5
.2. The method of making pipe coupling parts which comprises, forming a hollow, two-diametered casting of generally cylindrical form having one portion thereof of an internal diameter substantially equal to the external diameter of 10 a part of the remaining portion, shaping the internal surface of the portion of larger diameter and the external surface of the portion of smaller diameter to form shoulders adapted to interfit, and separating the casting into parts to provide a rim coupling member and a coupling member adapted to fit within said rim coupling member.
3. A method of making pipe coupling parts which comprises, forming a hollow, two-diametered shape in which each of the two-diametered portions are of substantially cylindrical form, shaping the internal surface of one portion to give it an internal diameter substantially equal to the external diameter of themajor part of the remaining portion and provide a continuous in ternal shoulder, shaping the external section of the remaining portion to provide an external shoulder adapted to interfit with the internal shoulder of said first named portion, and separating said portions from each other along a line located adjacent ,to the juncture of the different diametered portions.
4. The method of making pipe coupling parts which comprises, forming a hollow, two-diamatered shape in which each portion of substantially uniform diameter is of generally cylindrical form, forming internal threads adjacent tov one end of each portion of substantially uniform diameter, and separating the shape into separate parts along a line located substantially at the meeting line of the portions of diiferent diameters and by the same operation forming an external shoulder and seating surface upon one of said portions.
5. The method of making pipe coupling parts which comprises, forming a hollow terete shape having one end portion thereof of a diameter substantially greater than that of the opposite end portion, cutting internal threads in opposite ends of said shape and forming an annular shoulder in the end portion of greater diameter, sepa- JAMES F.
